10L90 vs 6R140: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two get cross-shopped constantly, and they could not be more different in mission. The GM 10L90 is a ten-speed built for high-output cars. The Ford 6R140 TorqShift is a six-speed built for the Super Duty and nothing else. Here is the breakdown of ratios, torque capacity, known failure points, and rebuild effort.
Quick spec comparison
GM 10L90 is the heavy-duty member of GM's Hydra-Matic 10-speed family. Published gear data lists 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689 and 0.636, with a 4.866 reverse. That is a 7.386 overall ratio spread with an average step of 1.249 between gears. Maximum input torque is 900 N·m, roughly 664 lb-ft, versus 800 N·m for the lighter 10L80. Internally it uses four gearsets, two brakes and three rotating clutches, and GM builds it at the Romulus, Michigan plant and at Silao, Mexico, beginning in 2017. Applications include the 2017–2024 Camaro ZL1, the 2019–2020 Cadillac CT6, and the CT5 and CT4 from 2020 on.
Ford 6R140 TorqShift went into production in early 2010 for the 2011 model year, paired with the 6.7L Power Stroke, per Sonnax. Gear ratios are 3.974, 2.318, 1.516, 1.149, 0.858 and 0.674, with a 3.12 reverse. Maximum input torque is quoted at 1,400 lb-ft, but read that number correctly: it accounts for torque multiplication through the converter and is not an engine torque rating. The unit weighs about 325 lb dry and roughly 350 lb with fluid, uses MERCON LV, and takes a Motorcraft FT187 dual-media filter with a factory 150,000-mile fluid and filter interval. A manual was never offered behind the 6.7L, and an optional live PTO gives both mobile and stationary operation.
The real difference: gear count versus mass
The 10L90 wins on ratio strategy. A 4.696 first gear and a 0.636 tenth give you launch torque and low cruise RPM in the same box, and the 1.249 average step keeps the engine in its power band on every shift. That is why it lives behind GM's highest-output car engines rather than behind a dually.
The 6R140 wins on mass and duty cycle. Six gears is fewer, but everything is bigger: a one-piece case with integrated bellhousing, a high-capacity dual-media filtration system, and a converter that hits the scale at approximately 70 lb dry, per Sonnax. The 6R140 impeller hub is splined in two places — outside diameter splines drive the transmission pump, inside diameter splines engage the PTO system. Put plainly: if the job is heavy towing or running a PTO, the 6R140 is the correct transmission and the 10L90 is not a candidate.
What actually fails: 10L90
The headline item is a safety recall. In March 2025 GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90, per Sonnax. The stated condition is a momentary wheel lock-up at higher speeds, sometimes including a downshift back to 2nd gear. The root cause is the feed limit low valve in the valve body wearing and gradually losing control pressure. That valve limits solenoid feed to the default disable solenoid, which positions the default enable and default select valves. When feed pressure drops, those valves can pull the unit into a lower gear or create a bind-up. Sonnax notes 10L1000 units showing feed limit valve wear in as few as 35,000 miles on vehicles that tow or haul large trailers. A useful field check: let the vehicle cool off, because most of the time the transmission functions normally until it is hot.
Beyond that valve, Sonnax lists the recurring 10-speed repair items as CDF drum sleeve movement, cylinder clutch container failure (the "stove pipe" failure), main shaft plugs loosening, overheating from incorrect fluid level, and speed sensor issues. Valve body inspection should focus on the main pressure regulator valve, TCC priority valve, TCC regulator valve, boost valve, and the latch valves, which get beaten up by the retainer clip. Impregnated plate filters also come loose on the separator plate and cause valves to stick. One design note before you diagnose: the 10-speed uses casting-integrated direct-acting solenoids that only produce clutch pressure with current, so a 10-speed unplugged from the electrical source has no movement at all. That is normal, not a failure.
What actually fails: 6R140
The 6R140's problems center on the converter and on shift calibration rather than on broken hard parts. Sonnax describes it as a captive clutch converter: the clutch plate reacts against a separate backing plate inside the converter and never touches the front cover. That matters commercially — paying extra for a forged billet cover on a 6R140 converter does not buy the clutch-surface benefit it buys on a 48RE. The steels inside are riveted together and connected by leaf springs that are prone to breakage, and reaching the friction elements requires cutting the contoured stamped backing plate out of the cover assembly. Sonnax also notes the converter clutch is an active one, capable of applying as early as 2nd gear at 18 mph and cycling on both upshifts and downshifts.
The other 6R140 pattern is post-overhaul shift quality. Sonnax reports that both the 6R80 and 6R140 have trouble getting adapts to lock in after numerous upshifts and downshifts, and traces it back to reused solenoids: the variable bleed solenoids lose their calibration or banding over time, which corrupts PCM shift control, overlap and adaptation. Solenoid strategy and body ID codes must be programmed into the PCM so it knows the banding, and with correct calibration a relearn can complete within three to five shift cycles.
If you are in the valve body, identification is not optional. Per Sonnax, first-generation 2011–2014 castings carry a rough forging number ending in "EB," and the earliest separator plates have no external notches but are stamped with engineering number BC3P-7Z490-EB, -EC, -ED or -EE. A third dampener piston in the low/reverse solenoid output circuit was added in 2013–2014 and pairs with the -EE plate. For 2015-later production the casting forging number ends in "BA" and runs through 2019, with four separator plates identified by a "C," "CC," "V" or "VV" notch. On 2017-later diesel applications the cold lube passage is no longer functional — Ford moved the thermostat out of the valve body to the transmission cooler and plugged the bore.
The fix, and what to replace while you are in there
On a 10L90, a pressure-loss complaint with a drop-to-2nd or lock-up symptom points at the feed limit low valve first, and the cool-down test is the fastest way to confirm a heat-dependent pressure loss. Address the valve wear, then inspect the CDF drum sleeve and the clutch container before you close it up. If the unit is coming apart anyway, do the full soft-part replacement with a 10L90 rebuild kit and refresh the friction and steel stack from the clutch pack and steel module shelf rather than reusing burnt plates.
On a 6R140, plan on the converter. Sonnax's guidance is to always replace the drawn cup needle bearing in the transmission pump during rebuild and to inspect both the outside and inside of the impeller hub — the inside diameter is a sealing surface as well as the PTO spline. Do not reuse variable bleed solenoids on a unit that already had shift complaints. Replace-while-you-are-in-there list, both units: all frictions and steels, every seal and gasket, the pump bearing, the filter, the converter or a properly rebuilt one, and the solenoids if shift quality was a complaint before teardown.
Cost and effort
Neither is a driveway job. The 6R140 is a roughly 325 lb unit in a Super Duty; you need a proper transmission jack and a lift, and shop labor typically runs 8 to 12 hours for removal, overhaul and reinstallation. The 10L90 is lighter but more electronically involved, and even a feed limit valve repair means dropping the pan and often the unit. Both require post-repair adaptive relearn drive cycles before shift quality settles. Difficulty is advanced on both.
Which one to choose
You are almost never truly choosing between them, because they do not fit the same vehicles. Choose the platform, not the transmission. Go 6R140 if you tow heavy or need a PTO — it was designed around a single diesel and never asked to do anything else. Go 10L90 if you want the ratio spread and shift speed behind a high-output gas engine, and you are willing to stay on top of valve body wear and the recall valve.
FAQ
Can I swap a 6R140 behind a GM engine, or a 10L90 into a Super Duty? Both get done in the custom world, but neither is a bolt-in. The 6R140's PTO-splined impeller hub, live-drive PTO provisions and Ford-specific control strategy make it an adapter-and-standalone-controller project. The 10L90's direct-acting solenoids produce clutch pressure only with current, so it will not move at all without a proper controller.
Is the 10L90 really only 664 lb-ft when people run far more power? 664 lb-ft (900 N·m) is the published maximum input torque rating, and it is already higher than the 10L80's 800 N·m. Builders exceed it with upgraded clutch packs and calibration, but that is beyond the factory rating, and clutch capacity and heat become the limits.
Does the 6R140's 150,000-mile fluid interval apply to a truck that tows? That is the published interval. Severe duty — towing, PTO use, high ambient heat — is exactly the condition Sonnax associates with accelerated valve and converter wear on these heavy units, so shorten it well below the book number if the truck works.
