Someone shopping a used performance GM against a used Ram heavy-duty diesel is really asking a different question: which of these two units am I willing to own, and what does each one cost me when it lets go? The GM 10L90 is a ten-speed longitudinal automatic built for high-output gas engines. The Chrysler 68RFE is a six-speed built for Cummins torque in a work truck. Different missions, and very different failure bills.

10L90: what it is

The 10L90 is the higher-output member of the Ford-GM jointly developed ten-speed family. Per the published specifications for the family, the 10L80 and 10L90 share the same ten forward ratios, running from 4.696:1 in first down to 0.636:1 in tenth, for a total ratio spread of 7.386:1, and both are built around four planetary gearsets. That spread is the whole point. A numerically deep first gear gets a heavy performance car moving, and a 0.636 tenth drops cruise RPM well below where an older six- or eight-speed would sit. Documented 10L90 applications include the 2017-2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6, and 2020-and-later Cadillac CT5 and CT4.

What actually fails on a 10L90

Two details from that article are worth knowing before you buy one of these:

  • The valve body is electronically integrated. Ten-speed valve bodies use casting-integrated, direct-acting solenoids (CIDAS) that work directly on the clutch control valves and only produce clutch pressure with current applied. Sonnax notes the practical consequence plainly: a ten-speed has no movement at all when unplugged from the electrical source. Solenoids rarely fail, but they are held in with retainer clips and should be checked for bore tightness.
  • Bad batteries mimic a bad valve body. Sonnax specifically calls out vehicles that come back after repair with harsh engagements and erratic shifts because the battery is weak - and notes that batteries in these Fords and GMs last roughly three years. Wear-wise, the valves to inspect are the main pressure regulator valve, TCC priority valve, TCC regulator valve, boost valve and latch valves, plus the separator plate - Sonnax warns that impregnated plate filters come loose and displace, which sticks valves. 68RFE: what it is

The 68RFE is a six-speed automatic used behind the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. Published ratios are 3.23 / 1.84 / 1.41 / 1.00 / 0.82 / 0.63 with a 4.44:1 reverse. It weighs roughly 263 lb, runs ATF+4, uses a band-less design, and carries dual transmission fluid filters (DieselHub 68RFE overview). Sonnax dates the application window as '07-'20 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the high-torque-output 6.7L Cummins diesel.

The one weakness that defines this transmission

Sonnax product support representative Jason Larochelle is blunt about it: the most common failure point of the 68RFE is the overdrive clutches, and the OD clutch assembly has significant weak points even at stock power levels (Sonnax, "68RFE Overdrive Clutch Failure").

The number that explains it: the OE 68RFE overdrive clutches are single-sided with a steel core only .034" thick - Sonnax calls these some of the thinnest clutches installed in any transmission, and offers the direct comparison that the OE steels in a 4L80-E direct clutch pack are .080". With that little mass, the clutches cannot shed heat, and once past a certain temperature they distort, take clearance out of spec, fail to release fully, and burn.

Making it worse: those OD clutches are applied in 5th and 6th gear, which is where the truck spends most of its miles.

The 68RFE failure chain, in order

Sonnax lists seven contributing failure points. These are the ones that determine whether your repair sticks:

  1. Fragile OD clutches - the .034" single-sided frictions above.
  2. Leaking solenoid switch valve plugs - Sonnax calls these arguably the weakest link in the OD system. They cycle constantly, wear the casting, and cross-leak into and out of the OD circuit. Lost OD pressure means lower clutch holding force, which means slip, heat and failure.
  3. Weak OD clutch housing - the top of the OE housing is unsupported and flexes, in Sonnax's description, much like squeezing the top edge of a salad bowl, pushing the frictions out of clearance.
  4. Worn inner retainer housing - the clutches wear the housing over time and start to drag, affecting proper apply and release.
  5. Incorrect line pressure - too low and the clutches slip; too high and pressure pushes through excess solenoid switch valve bore clearance to partially apply or fail to release the OD clutches, typically setting P0871. Sonnax notes the line pressure sensor itself can lie, and that OE line pressure adapter tool No. 8259 installs in place of the sensor so you can verify with a mechanical gauge.
  6. Warped solenoid conductor plate - unsupported on one side, it warps under the connector seal load and bleeds OD apply pressure out of the circuit.
  7. Overburdened or modified vehicles - towing above rating, emissions deletes, oversized tires and programmers. Sonnax specifically flags tuners that bring TCC on before the 3-4 shift, applying the OD clutch without the cushion of an unlocked converter.

The fix: which parts, and why

The two units call for genuinely different shopping lists.

For a 68RFE, a rebuild that only replaces frictions, steels, gaskets, seals and filters will drive fine and then repeat the same OD failure, because you have replaced the symptom and left the underlying causes in place. The correct scope is: full soft-parts service plus the OD clutch capacity upgrade, plus the solenoid switch valve plug repair, plus a verified line pressure reading taken with a mechanical gauge. Start with a complete kit so the frictions, steels, gaskets, seals and both filters are in hand before the pan comes off.

Replace while you are in there

Both units punish a half-scope repair. If the transmission is out or the pan is down:

  • 68RFE: both filters, pan gasket, all case and drum seals, the OD clutch pack, solenoid switch valve plugs, solenoid conductor plate condition check, separator plate sealing, and a mechanical line pressure verification before you call it done.
  • 10L90: separator plate (check for loose impregnated filters), the pump seal between valve body and case, main pressure regulator and TCC valve lineup, solenoid retainer clips, speed sensors, and the CDF drum. Load-test or replace a battery older than about three years before you blame the adapts.

Cost and effort

Straight talk, without pretending every truck is the same:

The 68RFE is the cheaper and friendlier unit to work on. It is a conventional six-speed, the primary failure mode is known and singular, parts are abundant, and a competent DIYer with a lift and a transmission jack can do a full rebuild over a weekend. The catch is that doing it right costs more than doing it once, because the correct repair includes upgrade parts, not just replacement parts. Budget for the OD housing and the valve work up front rather than discovering them on the second teardown.

The 10L90 is the more demanding unit. Ten forward ratios' worth of clutch elements, integrated direct-acting solenoids, tight fluid level requirements and CDF drum work put it firmly in experienced-rebuilder territory. Diagnosis also leans harder on scan data than on a pressure gauge. Expect a longer job and less margin for a first-timer's error - but also expect fewer "it burned the same clutch again" repeats, because the 10L90 does not carry an equivalent to the 68RFE's .034" clutch problem.

Which one should you choose?

You are almost never choosing between these two in one vehicle, so decide by use case:

  • You tow heavy, daily. The 68RFE will do it, but treat the OD clutch upgrade and the solenoid switch valve repair as maintenance items rather than emergencies. A stock-clutch 68RFE working near its limit is running on borrowed time by Sonnax's own description.
  • You are adding power with a tuner. Sonnax explicitly warns that programmers can raise line pressure, change shift points, and lock the converter before the 3-4 shift. If you tune a 68RFE, upgrade the overdrive first.
  • You want a performance gas platform. The 10L90's 7.386:1 spread is a genuine advantage, and its documented problems are repairable hydraulic and drum issues rather than a structural clutch shortfall.
  • You want the cheapest long-term ownership. A stock, unmodified 68RFE in a truck that tows within its rating is the lower-cost unit to keep alive, mostly because parts and labor access are so much better.
