10L80 vs 68RFE: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two automatics never share a truck, so nobody is cross-shopping them for a swap. People compare the GM 10L80 and the Chrysler 68RFE for one of two reasons: they are deciding between a half-ton GM truck and a Ram 2500/3500 Cummins, or they already own one and want to know what it is going to cost them long term. Both are answerable, and the answer is not the one the gear counts suggest.
The short version
The 10L80 is the more modern gearbox and the better everyday transmission. The 68RFE sits behind a far bigger engine and pulls far heavier loads, but it does it with one specific weak point that is well documented and fixable. Neither is disqualifying. What matters is which failure you are signing up for.
Specs side by side
Per DieselHub's 10R80/10L80 spec sheet, the 10L80 runs 4.70:1 in 1st, then 2.99, 2.15, 1.80, 1.52, 1.28, 1.00 direct in 7th, 0.85, 0.69 and 0.64:1 in 10th, with a 4.87:1 reverse. It is an aluminum case, roughly 230 lbs dry, holds about 13 U.S. quarts, uses DEXRON ULV ATF, and carries a nominal rating of about 800 N-m (roughly 590 lb-ft). It went into production for 2017 and is shared hard-part-for-hard-part with the Ford 10R80; only the electronic controls differ between the two.
The 68RFE, per DieselHub's 68RFE spec sheet, runs 3.23:1 in 1st, 1.84, 1.41, 1.00 direct in 4th, 0.82 and 0.63:1 in 6th, with a deep 4.44:1 reverse. Also aluminum, but heavier at roughly 263 lbs dry, and it uses ATF+4. DieselHub does not publish a numeric torque rating for it, listing instead Chrysler's internal strength designation of "8." It arrived mid-2007 behind the 6.7L Cummins in the Ram 2500 and 3500, replacing the 48RE, and stayed in service on non-high-output trucks.
Gearing: what the extra four gears actually buy
The 10L80's ratio span from 4.70 to 0.64 is about 7.3:1. The 68RFE's span from 3.23 to 0.63 is about 5.1:1. That wider span is why a 10-speed truck can hold a small-displacement gas engine in its torque band on a grade and still turn low RPM at 75 mph. It is also why the 10L80 shifts constantly, which matters later.
The 68RFE's advantage is not span, it is the deep 4.44:1 reverse and a first gear paired to an engine making its torque just off idle. Ten speeds are not a substitute for displacement. If you are pulling a gooseneck, the Cummins chassis wins regardless of how the transmission behind it is rated.
The 68RFE's weak point: overdrive clutches
This is the single most important thing to know about the 68RFE, and Sonnax documents it precisely. The overdrive clutches are single-sided with a steel core only .034" thick, which Sonnax calls some of the thinnest clutches installed in any transmission. For scale, the OE steels in a 4L80-E direct clutch pack are .080". Thin plates have almost no mass, so they cannot shed heat; once they pass a certain temperature they begin to distort, clearance falls out of spec, the pack stops releasing fully, and it burns.
Sonnax lists four more contributors worth checking during any 68RFE repair:
- Leaking solenoid switch valve plugs. These cycle constantly and wear the casting, cross-leaking into and out of the overdrive circuit. Lost OD pressure equals lost clutch holding force. Sonnax calls the plugs arguably the weakest link in the whole OD system.
- A flexing overdrive housing. The top of the OE housing is unsupported and flexes like the rim of a salad bowl, which pushes the frictions out of clearance. Sonnax compares it directly to the old 4L60-E input drum problem.
- Worn inner retainer housing. The OD clutches apply in 5th and 6th, where the truck spends most of its miles, so wear accumulates and the clutches start to drag, affecting proper apply and release.
- Incorrect line pressure. Too low starves the apply and lets the pack slip; Sonnax notes low line pressure can go unnoticed behind a failed line pressure sensor.
The upgrade path is not a mystery. Sonnax's Smart-Tech overdrive clutch housing kit uses a taller pack built with thicker steels plus a bolt-on anchor plate that eliminates the flex, which they rate at 20% more clutch capacity out of the box. Anyone tuning a 6.7 and leaving the transmission alone is buying a rebuild.
The 10L80's weak points: valves, not clutches
The 10L80 does not fail the way the 68RFE fails. Its problems are hydraulic control problems, and they show up as driveability complaints long before anything burns.
Latch valves. Sonnax states that the Gen. 1 GM 10L60/10L80/10L90 and Ford 10R60/10R80 each use four latch valves that feed line pressure to the clutch packs, and that they wear from continuous back-and-forth motion, heavy side loading, and spring hang-up. Bore leakage lets regulated line pressure exhaust past the spring and clip, producing erratic shifts, delayed engagement, solenoid codes and eventually burnt clutches. A valve stuck in the latched position causes extremely harsh shifts and dangerous bind-up. Sonnax has also seen the spring buckle and hog out the bore badly enough to guarantee a comeback if it is not addressed. Their position is that every 10-speed rebuild should involve replacing or modifying the latch valves.
Feed limit low valve, and a safety recall. In March 2025 GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90, for a momentary wheel lock-up condition at higher speeds that can also include a downshift back into 2nd gear. Sonnax traces the cause to wear in the feed limit low valve and the resulting gradual loss of control pressure; that valve also limits solenoid feed to the default disable solenoid, which commands the transmission's power-down default drive mode. If your truck is on that recall list, get it done.
Converter shudder. The 10-speed's lock-up clutch engages early and often by design. A shudder is not cosmetic; it means friction material is coming off the clutch and heading into the fluid and the control bores.
Which one to choose
Buying a truck: if the job is towing heavy, regularly, the Ram 2500/3500 with the Cummins and 68RFE is the right chassis, and you plan on an overdrive clutch upgrade as a maintenance item rather than a repair. If the job is daily driving, occasional towing, and fuel economy, the 10L80 is the better transmission and it is not close.
Already own one: a 68RFE owner should be watching for 5th and 6th gear slip and pulling the pan early enough to read the debris. A 10L80 owner should treat any shudder, delayed engagement or erratic shift as a valve body issue to diagnose now, not a wait-and-see.
Replace these while you are in there
On a 68RFE teardown: the full friction and steel set, all gaskets and seals, the filter, the overdrive housing (upgraded, not OE), the solenoid switch valve plugs, the servo, and the bushings. Cost and effort
The two jobs are not comparable in difficulty. The 68RFE's overdrive clutches and housing are inside the unit, so fixing it correctly means pulling the transmission and doing a full teardown. That is a heavy-duty 4x4 driveline job with a diesel in front of it: shop time, a transmission jack, and a full day of labor at minimum for an experienced hand, plus a rebuild kit and the upgraded housing. The 10L80's latch valves and feed limit valves live in the valve body, which comes out with the pan down. That is far less invasive, but it demands precision, because those bores are the thing you are repairing. If a 10L80 has already burned clutches from a leaking bore, you are into a full rebuild anyway and the effort gap closes.
FAQ
Can a 10L80 be swapped in behind a Cummins? There is no practical path. The 10L80 is a GM bellhousing pattern with GM controls, and its nominal rating is below what a stock 6.7L produces. The 68RFE was designed around that engine; the 10-speed was not.
Is the 68RFE weaker than the 48RE it replaced? Overall it is the more capable unit, with three planetary gear sets, six-pinion carriers and a band-less design that improved on the 48RE. But the thin overdrive clutch pack is a genuine step backward in one specific place, and that single item is why the 68RFE has the reputation it has.
