These two automatics get cross-shopped for one reason: both are the "heavy" version of their family, and both end up on the short list when somebody is buying a used truck, planning a swap, or deciding whether the unit already under their vehicle is worth rebuilding. But they are not the same kind of transmission, and they were never built for the same job. The GM 10L90 is a modern 10-speed rear-drive unit designed around gear count, efficiency, and high-horsepower gas engines. The Ford 5R110W TorqShift is a 2000s-era five-speed built to survive behind a 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke pulling weight.

This guide lays out the real numbers from published sources, the failure points that actually put each one on a bench, and a straight answer on which one to choose.

The spec comparison

Per the published ratio and application data for the Ford–GM 10-speed family, the 10L90 runs 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689 and 0.636, with a reverse ratio of 4.866. Its internal architecture is four gearsets, two brakes and three clutches, and the published maximum input torque is 900 N·m — roughly 664 lb-ft. Applications include the Camaro ZL1 (2017–2024) and Cadillac CT4, CT5 and CT6 models from the 2019–2020 model years forward. The 10L80 that shares its case shares the same ratio set and the same published torque number.

The 5R110W, per DieselHub's specification page, runs 3.11, 2.20, 1.54, 1.00 and 0.71 with a 2.88 reverse. It also carries a 1.09 fourth gear that is only commanded below 5°F to help warm the engine and transmission — which is why a unit advertised as a five-speed physically has six forward ratios. Maximum input torque is listed at 1,100 lb-ft, measured after converter multiplication rather than at the crank. It weighs roughly 295 lbs with fluid and was fitted to 2003–2010 Ford Super Duty trucks behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke.

Two things fall out of those numbers. First, the 5R110W has a meaningfully higher input torque rating, and it earns it — it is a heavier, physically larger unit designed around diesel torque and trailer weight. Second, the 10L90's advantage is not raw capacity, it is ratio coverage: a 4.696 first gear paired with a 0.636 tenth gear covers a spread that a five-speed cannot approach, which is what lets a high-output gas engine launch hard and still turn low rpm at highway speed.

Fluid is not a small detail on either unit

GM's TechLink transmission fluid and capacity reference specifies DEXRON ULV for the 10-speed rear-drive family. That fluid is not interchangeable with DEXRON III or DEXRON VI, and substituting is a real way to create shift-quality complaints in a healthy unit. The 5R110W was specified for MERCON SP, superseded by MERCON LV on later units. Neither transmission is forgiving about the wrong fluid, and on both, an overfill is its own failure mode.

How each one actually fails

10L90: the feed limit low valve is the headline

Sonnax documents severe side-load wear at the feed limit low valve in Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 units. That valve limits line pressure feed to the default disable solenoid and the control valves, and the feed limit low circuit is also tied into the boost ball system for "A" and "B" clutch control. When it wears, pressure to the default disable solenoid drops and the vehicle falls into default mode.

The symptom list Sonnax publishes for that failure is specific and worth memorizing: momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, a sudden downshift to 2nd from a high gear, harsh shifts, 5th-gear-only operation, a reduced propulsion message, and burnt clutches. Sonnax states the valve can wear out in as little as 30,000 miles, with many vehicles requiring service by 35,000 miles, and lists GM safety recalls N242480630 and N242454440 for momentary wheel lock-up against it. The recall remedy is software that watches valve performance and warns roughly 10,000 miles before failure, limiting the vehicle to 5th gear until the valve body is serviced.

Sonnax also documents two other wear points across the 10-speed family. The main pressure regulator valve wears at the outboard spool, letting line pressure cross-leak to exhaust and producing delayed engagement, poor shift quality, burnt clutches and TCC apply and release complaints. And the small spring-steel retainers holding the heavy linear force solenoids are prone to collapse; per Sonnax, those solenoids stroke the inboard clutch control valve with a pintle extending about .090", so a collapsed retainer lets the solenoid sit off-center, the pintle no longer strokes the valve correctly, and apply timing and pressure go out the window — up to and including damage to the valve body casting at the clutch valve bore.

5R110W: the converter goes first

BD Diesel identifies the torque converter as the single most common failure point on the 5R110W, calling out a delaminated lockup clutch, worn stator bushings and a failed turbine hub, and attributing it to a stamped-steel converter with a single-disc lockup clutch that cannot shed the heat. Once that converter starts shedding, the debris does secondary damage: contaminants score the pump body and gears, creating internal leaks and a drop in line pressure. On the clutch side, the direct, forward and overdrive packs are the ones that show up worn or burnt, with the overdrive pack and its hub the usual casualty.

The valve body tells the same story. Sonnax's 5R110W valve body layout maps the wear points directly to symptoms: converter pressure limit valve bore wear on '05-later units causes harsh or soft TCC apply, TCC slip, TCC lining failure and TCC codes. Pressure regulator bore wear produces codes 1744 and 1783 along with low line pressure and TCC concerns — Sonnax notes that deterioration in that bore also cuts flow into the converter and lube circuits. The OE manual valve is called out for delayed drive, delayed reverse and low line pressure. Sonnax also notes three distinct pump generations were produced with varying casting hardness, which matters if a shop is reaming the pressure regulator bore.

Which one should you choose?

They are not interchangeable and rarely a genuine either/or in the same chassis, so the honest answer is decided by the job:

  • Towing heavy, regularly, behind a diesel: the 5R110W. The 1,100 lb-ft input rating and the physical mass behind it are what that unit exists for. Budget for a converter upgrade, because the factory converter is the weak link.
  • High-output gas performance or a modern half-ton: the 10L90. The ratio spread does things a five-speed cannot, and the 664 lb-ft published input rating is well matched to what those engines make.
  • Buying used and worried about repair exposure: a 10L90 with an unaddressed feed limit low valve is a known, dated, mileage-driven failure — check whether the recall software and valve body service have been performed. A 5R110W with an original converter and unknown fluid history is the equivalent risk on the Ford side.

The fix, and what to replace while you are in there

On both units, the electro-hydraulic side is where most drivability complaints originate, and it is serviceable without a full teardown. If a 10L90 is throwing shift-quality codes or defaulting, the solenoid pack and valve body are the first stop; on a 5R110W, the seven-solenoid pack is the direct analogue.

For the GM side, start with a complete 10L90 shift solenoid kit and inspect the solenoid retainers while the valve body is out. Replace while you are in there: filter and pan gasket on both. On the 10L90, the solenoid stabilization retainers and the overhaul gasket and seal set. On the 5R110W, the pump bushing if there is any converter hub play, plus the pressure switch end plugs Sonnax notes fit any of five valve body locations. On either unit, if the converter has contaminated the fluid, the cooler and lines have to be flushed or the new parts eat the same debris.

Cost and effort framing

A solenoid pack replacement on either transmission is a pan-down, valve-body-out job — typically in the 3 to 5 hour range for a shop, and realistic for a competent DIYer with a lift or good stands, a torque wrench and the correct fluid on hand. Valve body bore repair with oversized valves is a different tier: it needs reaming fixtures and belongs in a shop. A full rebuild on either unit is a 10-plus hour removal-and-teardown job. The 5R110W adds converter cost to almost every rebuild, since replacing the original stamped converter is the point of the exercise.

FAQ

Can a 10L90 handle diesel torque like a 5R110W? Not at the published numbers. The 10L90's rated maximum input torque is 900 N·m (664 lb-ft); the 5R110W is listed at 1,100 lb-ft after converter multiplication. They were engineered for different loads.

What does P0747 mean on a 10L90? Sonnax lists P0747 among the symptoms of feed limit low valve wear, alongside momentary wheel lockup, unexpected downshift to 2nd, harsh shifts and 5th-gear-only operation. Check whether the applicable GM recall work has been performed before chasing anything else.
