What "wont go into Drive" actually looks like

Scenarios:

  • Shifter in D, engine revs, no movement
  • Truck rolls forward slowly only
  • Delayed engagement (5+ seconds)
  • Engages but slips immediately
  • Reverse works fine but Drive doesnt
  • Cause #1: Low or Burnt Fluid

    Why:

  • Cant build line pressure
  • Cant apply forward clutches
  • Truck wont move
  • Diagnosis:

  • Pull dipstick
  • Check level and color
  • Look under truck for leaks
  • Fix cost:

  • Just low: $20-$100 add fluid
  • Burnt: rebuild planning
  • Cause #2: Burnt or Stripped Forward Clutch Pack

    Why:

  • Forward clutch engages D, 1, 2, 3
  • Burnt = no friction = no movement
  • Sometimes works in reverse (different clutch)
  • Diagnosis:

  • Drop pan, look for clutch debris
  • Brown/black flakes on magnet
  • Pressure test confirms
  • Fix cost:

  • Rebuild required: $2,500-$5,500
  • Cause #3: Broken Input Shaft

    Why:

  • Common on tuned diesel trucks
  • Shaft snaps from torque
  • No power transfer to clutches
  • Diagnosis:

  • Pieces of metal in pan
  • No drive in ANY gear
  • Sometimes reverse works briefly
  • Fix cost:

  • Input shaft + rebuild: $3,000-$6,000
  • Read our billet input shaft guide
  • Cause #4: Failed TR / NSBU Switch

    Why:

  • TCM thinks shifter is in wrong gear
  • Trans doesnt engage gear at all
  • Or engages wrong gear
  • Diagnosis:

  • P0705 / P0706 codes
  • Backup lights work in wrong position
  • Dash gear display wrong
  • Fix cost:

  • TR switch: $60-$150
  • Read our 4L60E TR switch
  • Cause #5: Worn Pump (Pressure Loss)

    Why:

  • Pump cant build pressure
  • Cant engage clutches
  • Truck wont move
  • Diagnosis:

  • Pressure test below spec
  • Brass in pan
  • Pump whine
  • Fix cost:

  • Pump rebuild: $800-$1,800
  • Or full rebuild: $3,000-$6,000
  • Less common causes
