Transmission Fluid Color Chart: What Each Color Tells You

Pull the dipstick, look at the fluid. The color tells you a story about your transmission. This chart shows what every color means and what action to take.

How to read fluid color

Best practice:

  • Wipe dipstick on white paper towel
  • Compare against natural light
  • Check at operating temp
  • Also smell - burnt smell tells you more

Use this guide:

  • Fluid color is half the diagnosis
  • Fluid texture is the other half
  • Both matter equally

Bright cherry red - HEALTHY

Meaning:

  • Fluid is fresh
  • Friction modifiers intact
  • No oxidation
  • Trans is happy

Action:

  • Continue current service schedule
  • No immediate concern
  • Photograph color for future comparison

Common in:

  • Trans serviced within 30k miles
  • Light use vehicles
  • Cool climate operation

Dark red / brown red - MILD WEAR

Meaning:

  • Fluid has heat cycled
  • Mild oxidation occurring
  • Some friction modifier breakdown
  • Normal at 30,000+ miles

Action:

  • Service within next 5,000 miles
  • Drain and refill
  • Replace filter
  • Inspect pan magnet

Brown - WORN FLUID

Meaning:

  • Heavy heat cycling
  • Significant oxidation
  • Detergent additives depleted
  • Past service interval

Action:

  • Service IMMEDIATELY
  • Drain, filter, refill
  • Inspect pan magnet carefully
  • Watch for shift issues

Common cause:

  • Skipped service intervals
  • Towing without HD cooler
  • 50,000-100,000 mile fluid
  • Brown with burnt smell - DAMAGE STARTING

    Meaning:

    • Clutch slip occurring
    • Heat damaged fluid
    • Friction modifier destroyed
    • Burnt clutch material in fluid

    Action:

  • Inspect immediately
  • Drop pan, check magnet
  • If steel debris = bigger problem
  • May need rebuild soon
  • Common cause:

  • Slip from clutch wear
  • Slip from low fluid
  • Overheating
  • Black with burnt smell - SEVERE

    Meaning:

    • Clutches severely worn
    • Fluid completely degraded
    • Internal damage occurring
    • Trans near failure

    Action:

  • Do NOT continue driving
  • Trailer to mechanic
  • Inspect pan immediately
  • Often rebuild required
  • Common indicators:

  • Slipping shifts
  • Delayed engagement
  • Sometimes wont move
  • Pink / milky - WATER CONTAMINATION

    Meaning:

    • Water mixed with fluid
    • Emulsion appearance
    • Source must be found

    Sources:

    • Cracked radiator (cooler inside radiator)
    • Leaking trans cooler
    • Submerged crossing
    • Condensation (rare cause of severe)

    Action:

  • Stop driving immediately
  • Fix water source first
  • Multiple fluid changes to clear water
  • Often needs rebuild if extended exposure
  • Foamy / aerated - LOW FLUID OR PUMP ISSUE

    Meaning:

    • Air mixed in fluid
    • Pump cavitation
    • Slipping shifts

    Sources:

    • Low fluid level (most common)
    • Worn pump
    • Suction tube cracked
    • O-ring failure on filter

    Action:

  • Check level immediately
  • If level good - pump issue
  • Inspect filter and seals
  • Green / blue tint - WRONG FLUID

    Meaning:

    • Someone added wrong fluid
    • Or contamination from cooler

    Sources:

    • Power steering fluid (different additives)
    • Coolant contamination
    • Wrong ATF spec

    Action:

  • Multiple drains/refills
  • Identify wrong fluid source
  • Check cooler integrity
  • Often safe to drive after flush
  • Trans-specific color notes

    Allison 1000 (TES-295):

  • Starts slightly darker red than Dexron
  • Darkens faster (synthetic)
  • Brown = service overdue
  • Ford 6R140 (Mercon LV):

  • Lighter pink-red
  • Different smell than Dexron
  • Dodge 68RFE (ATF+4):

  • Starts dark cherry red
  • Distinctive smell
  • Brown = service needed
  • What pan debris adds

    Brass shavings:

  • Bushing wear
  • Normal small amount
  • Heavy amount = pump bushing
  • Steel chips:

  • Hard parts wearing
  • Always bad
  • Usually means rebuild
  • Black plastic:

  • Thrust washer wear
  • Mild = monitor
  • Heavy = repair needed
  • Aluminum shavings:

  • Valve body wear
  • Or pump body wear
  • Sonnax kit may fix
  • Burnt clutch material:

  • Brown-black flakes
  • Clutch pack worn
  • Rebuild needed
  • What burnt smell means

    Mild burnt smell:

  • Heat damaged fluid
  • Service immediately
  • May save trans
  • Strong burnt smell:

  • Clutches burned
  • Damage already done
  • Plan rebuild
  • No burnt smell + dark fluid:

  • Heat aged only
  • Service may fully fix
  • Better outlook
  • When to act

    Cherry red:

  • Continue normal service
  • Document baseline
  • Dark red:

  • Service within 30 days
  • Add HD cooler if towing
  • Brown:

  • Service this week
  • Inspect pan
  • Monitor for symptoms
  • Brown + burnt:

  • Tow to mechanic
  • Do not drive far
  • Diagnose pan debris
  • Black or pink or foamy:

  • Stop driving
  • Tow to mechanic
  • Major investigation needed
  • Bottom line

    Check fluid every:

  • Oil change interval (engine oil)
  • 30 seconds investment
  • Catches problems early
  • Photo for comparison:

  • Save phone pic at service
  • Compare 6 months later
  • Spot degradation early
  • Action saves money:

  • $150 service vs $3000 rebuild
  • Color tells you which
