What the flashing tow/haul light means

TCM has detected a fault:

  • Transmission code stored
  • Often paired with check engine light
  • Sometimes limp mode active
  • Drive limp to safety
  • Why it flashes:

  • Indicates TCM-specific issue
  • Different from solid tow/haul on (just mode active)
  • Universal warning across GM trucks
  • Common causes

    #1: Solenoid pack failure

  • Multiple solenoid codes
  • Most common cause
  • Heat-related typically
  • #2: Internal harness

  • Heat damage to wiring
  • Intermittent symptoms
  • #3: Speed sensor

  • P0716/P0722 codes
  • Cheap fix
  • #4: TEHCM (6L80/8L90)

  • Combined TCM + solenoid
  • Expensive replacement
  • #5: Burnt fluid

  • TCM detects pressure issue
  • Service may help short-term
  • What to do immediately

    Step 1: Pull DTCs

  • OBD2 scan tool
  • Identifies specific issue
  • Multiple codes = TEHCM or harness
  • Single code = isolated component
  • Step 2: Check fluid

  • Level and color
  • Burnt = bigger issue
  • Step 3: Try reset

  • Disconnect battery 30 minutes
  • Sometimes clears intermittent
  • Wont fix hardware
  • Step 4: Avoid heavy load

  • Especially with trailer
  • Light driving until fixed
  • Heavy load makes worse
  • Cost by cause

    Cheap fixes ($30-$300):

  • Speed sensor: $30-$100
  • NSBU switch: $60-$150
  • Fluid + filter: $200-$400
  • Mid-tier ($700-$1,500):

  • Solenoid pack: $700-$1,400
  • Internal harness: $500-$1,000
  • Expensive ($1,500-$2,500):

  • TEHCM replacement: $1,500-$2,500
  • Major ($3,000+):

  • Full rebuild: $3,000-$6,500
  • By trans family

    4L60E (rare flashing tow/haul):

  • Usually paired with codes
  • Solenoid or sensor
  • 4L80E flashing:

  • TCC solenoid common
  • Center support sprag if hard codes
  • 6L80 flashing:

  • TEHCM most common
  • Solenoid pack second
  • Read our 6L80 TEHCM
  • Allison 1000 flashing:

  • Internal harness
  • Solenoid pack
  • Read our Allison limp mode
  • Can you keep driving?

    Light load, short distance:

  • Probably OK to limp home
  • Avoid tow load
  • Get to shop ASAP
  • Highway speeds:

  • Avoid if light is flashing
  • Limp mode means trans wont upshift
  • High RPM damages engine and trans
  • With trailer attached:

  • STOP driving with trailer
  • Detach trailer if possible
  • Drive solo to shop
  • Reset attempts

    Battery disconnect:

  • 30 minutes disconnect
  • Clears KAM
  • Sometimes fixes intermittent
  • Drive cycle:

  • After fixing underlying issue
  • 10-15 miles normal driving
  • TCM relearns
  • Scan tool clear codes:

  • Required for many GM TCMs
  • OBD2 alone insufficient sometimes
  • Cant just reset without fixing

    Wont resolve:

  • Hardware failure
  • Internal harness damage
  • Worn clutches
  • May resolve:

  • Intermittent connector issue
  • Single sensor fluke
  • Adaptive learning issue
  • Tuned truck flashing

    Common cause:

  • Tune outputs sensor values outside spec
  • TCM cant handle
  • Defaults to flash warning
  • Fix:

  • Custom TCM tune to match engine tune
  • $300-$700 retune
  • EFI Live / HP Tuners
  • Service intervals to prevent

    Stock daily:

  • 50,000 miles fluid + filter
  • Tow use:

  • 30,000 miles
  • Aux cooler mandatory
  • Tuned:

  • 25,000 miles
  • Synthetic fluid recommended
  • Questions to ask shop

    Before $1,500+ repair:

  • What specific codes are stored?
  • Have you tried sensor replacement first?
  • Is the fluid burnt?
  • Did you try TCM reset?
  • If shop wants major repair without diagnosis: get second opinion

    When to consider rebuild

    Rebuild likely needed if:

  • Multiple codes + burnt fluid
  • Slip during normal driving
  • High mileage (200k+)
  • Pressure way below spec
  • Service NOT rebuild if:

  • Single code
  • Clean fluid
  • Low mileage
  • Specific cheap fix identified
  • Pre-purchase used truck flashing

If light flashes on test drive:

  • Walk away
  • Or major negotiation room
  • Trans repair coming
  • Sometimes seller has cleared codes:

  • Drive 30+ miles
  • Watch for return
  • Pull codes yourself
  • Insurance / warranty

    Extended warranty:

  • Check coverage
  • Some cover trans issues
  • Many exclude wear
  • Document:

  • Photo of flashing light
  • Code scan printout
  • Service records helpful
  • Bottom line

    Most flashing tow/haul lights are:

  • Solenoid pack (40%)
  • Single sensor (25%)
  • Fluid past service (20%)
  • Harness damage (10%)
  • TEHCM (5%)
  • Cheapest path:

  • Pull codes first
  • Sensor replacement attempts
  • Then solenoid pack
  • Major repair last resort
