P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit: Diagnosis, Causes, and the Real Fix

P0715 sets when the PCM or TCM stops seeing a usable input/turbine speed signal. Most people meet it the same way: a wrench light or MIL comes on, the transmission drops into a limp or commanded-neutral state, and the vehicle stops pulling or gets stuck in one gear. It can be caused by an inexpensive sensor or by a broken part deep inside the case, and the whole job is figuring out which before you pull anything apart.

What the input/turbine speed sensor actually does

The sensor reports how fast the input side of the transmission is turning. The controller compares that number against engine RPM and output shaft speed to confirm the commanded gear is engaged, to time clutch apply and release, and to manage torque converter clutch behavior. Lose the signal and there is no way to verify a ratio, so the controller protects itself.

Two different sensor technologies sit behind that one code, and they are diagnosed differently. As Transmission Digest's Dan Frazier describes it, a variable reluctance sensor is a coil of wire wound around a magnet, and any metallic tooth crossing the tip induces a voltage on its own, with no power supplied to it. A Hall-effect sensor needs a supply voltage. Sonnax notes Ford's 10R60, 10R80 and 10R140 all use four two-wire Hall-effect sensors, TSS, ISSA, ISSB and OSS, supplied 9 volts by the PCM or TCM. Knowing which type you are holding tells you whether to expect a sine wave or a square wave on a scope.

Diagnosis: scan data first, tools second

1. Read the live PIDs before touching a wrench. Sonnax's method for the 10R units is to pull up the transmission PIDs and watch turbine shaft speed, intermediate shaft speed A and B, output shaft speed, gear commanded, gear ratio measured and vehicle speed together. The relationships tell the story. Normal operation on those units, per Sonnax, is TSS showing RPM in Park and Neutral and zero RPM in Reverse or Drive, while ISSA and ISSB show no RPM at all when the vehicle is stationary.

2. Confirm the sensors are in the right holes. This is the cause most people never consider. Sonnax documents that after a repair, TSS and ISSA locations may be swapped, or OSS and ISSB. The connectors differ from sensor to sensor, so only the location can be crossed, not the plug. If TSS and ISSA are reversed, ISSA shows RPM in Park and Neutral while TSS reads zero, exactly backwards, and a code appears as soon as a gear is selected. If OSS and ISSB are reversed, Sonnax notes the vehicle typically drives and shifts at first, then throws multiple gear ratio codes.

3. Verify the circuit with a scope, not just an ohmmeter. Frazier's 2004 Ford F-550 with a 4R100 is the cautionary tale: the sensor tested in range, an open was found between the PCM terminal and the sensor, an overlay wire was installed, and there was still no signal. His verification method is to pull the sensor, hook a lab scope to the signal wire at the PCM, and have a helper wave a pocket screwdriver across the tip. A variable reluctance sensor gives a sine wave; a Hall-effect sensor, keyed on, a square wave. Get a waveform and both sensor and circuit are intact, so the fault is elsewhere.

4. Check the trigger, not just the sensor. On that same F-550 the TSS signal is generated by teeth on the coast clutch drum, and the drum was not spinning. On a 2006 Ford Focus in the same article, one output tone ring tooth bent no more than 0.015 inch set a noise code on the output speed sensor circuit. Sonnax also reports a third 10R condition where the embedded magnets in the P2 planet deteriorate, leaving a faulty TSS reading and a vehicle that may only drive 40 to 100 feet before dropping into a neutral state. A magnetic ABS test strip laid against the P2 planet shows whether those magnets are intact.

The most common causes, ranked

  • The sensor itself. Ford TSB 20-2393, dated 09 November 2020, covers 2020 F-Super Duty trucks with a 10R140 built on or before 21-Sep-2020 showing a lack of power with an illuminated MIL and/or wrench lamp and DTCs P0715, P0716, P0717 and/or P07C0. Ford's stated cause is the turbine shaft speed sensor, and the correction is to replace it.
  • Wiring, connector and terminal faults. Chafed insulation, a corroded terminal, or an open between the sensor and the controller will set the code with a perfectly good sensor installed.
  • Wrong sensor or wrong air gap after a rebuild. The AX4S and AX4N are the classic example. Sonnax notes the AX4S sensor is slightly longer, and the driven sprockets are the same with reluctors of identical tooth count pressed in at different depths. An AX4S sensor with an AX4N sprocket lets the reluctor contact and damage the sensor; an AX4N sensor with an AX4S sprocket leaves the air gap too great and can cause ratio codes and/or a turbine speed sensor code. Sonnax gives the correct air gap as approximately .120 inch. On an assembled unit, measure the depth from the sensor hole to the reluctor: .687 to .709 inch calls for the AX4N sensor F5DZ-7M101-A, .759 to .772 inch the AX4S sensor F1DZ-7M101-A.
  • Damaged reluctor, tone ring or trigger magnets. Covered above, and the reason a new sensor sometimes changes nothing.
  • Module-level and internal-assembly failures. On the Audi 0B5 S tronic, Audi TSB 35 12 08 2032211/1 lists P0715 with DFCC 8094 and 8103 as Transmission Input Speed Sensor 1 Electrical Malfunction, alongside P2765 (DFCC 8095, 8104) for Input Speed Sensor 2. The prescribed repair is replacing the G676 sensor module with circuit board, and the bulletin specifies the wiring loom must be replaced with it.

The fix: which part, and why

If the scope test shows no waveform at the sensor and the wiring checks out, you are replacing the sensor. That is the high-success path, and exactly what Ford calls for on the 10R140. On many units the input and output sensors share a design and age at the same rate, which is why they are commonly sold as a set.

Match the part to the unit, not to the code. For a Ford 4R100 that is the 4R100 input turbine speed sensor (TSS) for units without power take-off; on a 5R110W it is the 5R110W input speed / turbine shaft sensor, 8C3Z-7M101-A. Our transmission speed and pressure sensor catalog is organized by unit so you can confirm fitment before ordering, and connector, pigtail and terminal repair pieces live under wiring and electronics.

Replace while you are in there

Ford's own bulletin is a good checklist. Along with the turbine speed sensor (LC3Z-7M101-A) and Motorcraft MERCON ULV fluid (XT-12-QULV), TSB 20-2393 lists four items to inspect and replace only if necessary: the fluid pan gasket (LC3Z-7F396-B), the fluid filter (LC3Z-7G186-A), the main control manifold seal (LC3Z-7N265-A) and the fluid pump gasket (LC3Z-7N265-B). If the pan is coming off anyway, a filter and gasket are cheap insurance. Add the sensor O-ring, and inspect the connector terminals for spread pins or corrosion while the harness is exposed.

Cost and effort

Difficulty depends entirely on where the sensor lives. Some units put it in an external boss you can reach in minutes with hand tools. On the 10R140, Ford books labor operation 202393A at 2.6 hours to retrieve DTCs and replace the TSS sensor, a realistic yardstick for a pan-off, internally mounted job. The Audi 0B5 module repair, by contrast, requires case disassembly and is not a driveway job. Ford also warns that once the adaptive shift strategy is reset the controller begins relearning, and shifts may be firmer than normal for several days. Do not chase a new problem inside that window.

FAQ

Can I drive with P0715? Often not far. The controller can command a neutral state to protect the unit, and in Ford's 10R140 bulletin the complaint is a lack of power with the vehicle stuck in 7th gear. Treat it as a get-it-diagnosed code, not a wait-and-see code.

I replaced the sensor and the code came back. What now? Verify the trigger and the circuit, not the sensor. Bent or missing reluctor teeth, deteriorated trigger magnets, a component that is not turning, a wrong air gap from a mismatched sensor and sprocket, or an open in the harness will all reproduce the code with a brand new part installed.

How is P0715 different from P0716 and P0717? They describe the same circuit at different levels of failure: P0715 is the general circuit fault, P0716 a range or performance complaint, P0717 no signal at all. Ford lists all three together in the same 10R140 bulletin with a single stated cause. If you are on a GM 4L60E family unit, see our writeup on P0716 and P0717 input speed sensor no-signal faults, and if the scan tool is also showing ratio faults, start with P0730 incorrect gear ratio.
