Nissan Titan & Frontier Transmission Guide: RE5R05A, RE7R01A

Nissan Titan and Frontier trucks use Jatco-built automatic transmissions. Heres the year-by-year breakdown and what to expect.

2004-2015 Titan / 2005-2021 Frontier (RE5R05A):

Specs:

  • 5-speed automatic
  • Jatco JR710E (also called RE5R05A)
  • Behind 5.6L V8 (Titan) / 4.0L V6 (Frontier)
  • ~370-440 ft-lb stock
  • Common failures:

  • Cooler line / radiator leak (well-known issue)
  • 3rd gear shift solenoid wear
  • Burnt fluid from cooler failure (most common)
  • Pump bushing wear at 150k+ miles
  • 2016+ Titan (RE7R01A / JR711E):

    Specs:

  • 7-speed automatic
  • Jatco-built
  • Behind 5.6L V8 (gas) / 5.0L V8 Cummins diesel (XD)
  • ~390-555 ft-lb stock
  • Common failures:

  • Less data (newer trans)
  • Mechatronic harness issues
  • TCC clutch wear under tow
  • The famous Titan radiator/cooler issue

    What happens:

  • Internal radiator cooler fails
  • Coolant mixes with trans fluid
  • Pink/milky trans fluid
  • Within weeks: catastrophic trans damage
  • How common:

  • 2004-2010 Titan: very common (the famous lawsuit issue)
  • 2011-2015: less common but still happens
  • 2016+: improved design
  • Fix:

  • Replace radiator immediately
  • Flush trans fluid (multiple times)
  • If damage done: rebuild required
  • Bypass cooler with external if budget tight
  • Total cost:

  • Radiator only: $400-$700 install
  • If trans damaged: $4,000-$6,500 rebuild
  • Always check fluid color on used Titan purchases
  • Fluid spec

    RE5R05A (5-speed):

  • Nissan Matic K (NS-2) ONLY
  • NOT Dexron, NOT Mercon
  • 9 quarts
  • RE7R01A (7-speed):

  • Nissan Matic S (different from K)
  • NOT interchangeable with K
  • 9 quarts
  • Specific PN matters
  • Service intervals

    Daily driver:

  • Factory: 60-100k miles
  • Reality: 50k miles
  • Tow use:

  • 30k miles
  • Aux cooler MANDATORY
  • Tow with stock cooler kills RE5R05A fast
  • Bypass cooler trucks:

  • 30-40k miles
  • External cooler instead of radiator route
  • Tuning limits

    RE5R05A (5-speed):

  • Stock OK to ~440 ft-lb
  • Above: HD rebuild required
  • Limited aftermarket HD
  • RE7R01A (7-speed):

  • Stock holds 555 ft-lb (Cummins XD)
  • Tuning past that: limited options
  • Rebuild cost

    RE5R05A rebuild:

  • Stock: $2,500-$3,800
  • HD: $3,800-$5,500
  • Higher than Big Three due to Jatco parts
  • RE7R01A rebuild:

  • Stock: $3,500-$5,500
  • HD: $5,500-$7,500
  • Limited aftermarket so far
  • HD upgrade options

    For RE5R05A:

  • External cooler kit ($150-$300)
  • HD shift kit (limited options)
  • Bypass internal radiator cooler
  • For RE7R01A:

  • Aux external cooler
  • Trans temp gauge install
  • Service interval matters more than upgrades
  • Pre-purchase used Titan/Frontier check

    Fluid color check (CRITICAL):

  • Pink/milky = bad radiator
  • Brown = service overdue
  • Burnt smell = trans damage
  • Drive test:

  • All gear engagement
  • 3-4 / 5-6 shift quality
  • TCC apply smoothness
  • Red flags:

  • Pink trans fluid (radiator failure)
  • Any history of overheating
  • 2004-2010 Titan without radiator service record
  • Most cost-effective Titan upgrade

    External cooler conversion:

  • Bypass internal radiator cooler entirely
  • Install dedicated external cooler
  • $200-$400 parts + $150-$300 install
  • Prevents radiator failure rebuild ($4,000+)
  • Easy ROI: $500 spent saves $4,000+ potential rebuild
  • When to consider trans swap

    4WD swap potential:

  • Limited - Nissan trans not common in swaps
  • Cost prohibitive
  • Rebuild original is the answer
  • Diesel-specific (Titan XD with Cummins 5.0):

    RE7R01A handling diesel:

  • Stock rating barely matches Cummins torque
  • Tuning quickly exceeds trans capacity
  • HD aux cooler MANDATORY
  • Service every 25k miles
  • Compared to competitor trucks

    Titan vs Tundra:

  • Tundra trans more reliable (less radiator issue)
  • Tundra aftermarket support similar (both Aisin/Jatco)
  • Titan vs Silverado 1500:

  • Silverado 6L80 has more aftermarket
  • Titan RE5R05A more conservative shift logic
  • Both prone to TCC issues if tow without cooler
