Mazda Miata Clutch Replacement: NA, NB and NC Kits Explained
A Miata clutch job looks the same from the driver's seat on every generation, but the parts are not. The 1.6L and 1.8L cars share a platform yet use clutch parts that do not freely mix, and the NC is a different animal again. Order by "Miata" alone and you can end up with a disc that will not pair with your pressure plate. This guide sorts out the NA, NB and NC kits, what each kit contains, and what to replace in the same job.

The Generations at a Glance
- NA (1990-1997): the original car. It started with the 1.6L engine, and our listings split 1990-1993 1.6L kits from 1994-and-later 1.8L kits.
- NB (1999-2005): 1.8L, including the 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed. NA and NB parts overlap on the 1.8L clutch, which is why vendors sell one disc for both.
- NC (2006-2015): a 2.0L car with a 5-speed or a 6-speed. It uses its own kits, not the NA/NB ones.
NA and NB: The 1.6 vs 1.8 Trap
Flyin' Miata's clutch disc listing states that its disc fits 1990-1997 NA and 1999-2005 NB cars, including the 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed. It also states that the disc works on 1.6 cars only when you use a compatible 1.8 flywheel and a 1.8 pressure plate, and that it is not compatible with pressure plates designed for the 1.6.
The practical rule: buy a complete kit written for your exact engine, as our 1.6L FX200 and 1.8L FX350 listings are, rather than mixing a disc from one and a pressure plate from the other. If you want to run a 1.8 clutch in a 1.6 car, treat it as a conversion that needs the 1.8 flywheel too.
NC: Match the Transmission
On the NC, the transmission decides the kit. Moss Miata's listing for the Exedy OEM replacement kit is for 2006-2015 cars with the 5-speed, and says Mazda originally used Exedy clutches, so it is the factory-equivalent part. That kit includes a pressure plate, clutch disc, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing and alignment tool. Our Clutch Masters 06-10 2.0L 5-speed FX350 is listed for the same 5-speed use, and we also list 6-speed kits such as the Clutch Masters 06-07 2.0L 6-speed FX100 (10063-HD00). Always confirm 5-speed or 6-speed before you order.
Stock Replacement or Heavy-Duty
Our ACT listings describe the HD/Perf Street kits as using ACT's Heavy Duty pressure plate, which the company says increases clamp load and reduces deflection, with a premium organic disc and a heat-treated chrome-moly rigid hub on the rigid version. If you want more holding power than stock but still drive the car every day, that is the lane. Our stock vs Stage 1 Miata clutch article covers how to decide.
Parts to Replace Together
- Pressure plate, disc, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing: replace the full set. The Moss listing above shows these as one kit.
- Clutch hydraulics (NA and NB): Flyin' Miata sells a hydraulics refresh bundle with a master cylinder, slave cylinder and stainless braided hose for the 1990-1997 NA and 1999-2005 NB, with a note that very early 1990 cars (VIN 111969 or lower) need a different slave cylinder. The clutch is already apart, so refreshing the hydraulics saves a second visit. Browse our clutch hydraulics collection as well.
- Flywheel: inspect or replace it. See when to replace the flywheel during a clutch job.
Cost and Effort
The Miata is a small, light car, and the job is a transmission-out repair done from underneath, with a driveshaft, shifter and hydraulics to disconnect. Use the correct alignment tool for the disc so it centers on the input shaft. For most owners the kit is the main cost, and the hydraulics refresh is a modest add-on that avoids doing the work twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 1.8 Miata clutch the same as a 1.6 clutch?
No. Flyin' Miata states that a disc for the 1.8 does not work with pressure plates designed for the 1.6, and it works in a 1.6 car only with a 1.8 flywheel and 1.8 pressure plate.
Does an NA clutch fit an NC Miata?
No. The NC has its own kits and is sold by transmission. Match the 5-speed or 6-speed to the kit listing.
What comes in a Miata clutch kit?
The Exedy kit described by Moss Miata contains a pressure plate, clutch disc, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing and alignment tool. Check each listing for its exact contents.
