How to Change Allison 1000 Transmission Fluid: TES-295 DIY Guide

The Allison 1000 requires TES-295 fluid and BOTH internal and external filters. Skip either filter or use the wrong fluid and you destroy a $5,000+ rebuild. Heres the right DIY procedure.

Service interval

Stock daily:

  • 50,000 miles
  • Both filters
  • Tow use:

  • 30,000 miles
  • Both filters
  • Aux cooler mandatory
  • Tuned Duramax:

  • 25,000 miles
  • Both filters every time
  • Critical for clutch life
  • Fluid spec - CRITICAL

    • TES-295 ONLY (NOT Dexron VI)
    • Mopar PN matters for spec match
    • 18 quarts full capacity
    • Wrong fluid kills $5,000 rebuild in 5k miles
    • $15-$25/qt
    • $300-$500 fluid bill

    What you need

    Parts:

  • TES-295 fluid (18 quarts)
  • Internal filter (AC Delco TF-280 or 29545779)
  • External spin-on filter (TP-1063 or 25010792)
  • Pan gasket
  • Tools:

  • 10mm + 13mm sockets
  • Oil filter wrench (external filter)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Drain pan (20+ qt)
  • Funnel + long-neck pour
  • Cost:

  • TES-295 fluid: $300-$500
  • Internal filter: $25-$45
  • External filter: $15-$30
  • Pan gasket: $15-$30
  • Total parts: $355-$605
  • Step 1: Warm trans

    • Drive 15 minutes
    • Operating temp 180F+
    • Park on level ground

    Step 2: External filter first

    Location:

  • Driver side rear of trans
  • Looks like oil filter
  • Procedure:

  • Spin off old filter (oil filter wrench)
  • Catch fluid in pan (~1 qt)
  • Lube new filter gasket with TES-295
  • Spin on hand-tight
  • Then 3/4 turn additional
  • Step 3: Drain trans pan

    • Drain plug under pan (most years)
    • Catch ~12 quarts
    • Plus ~1 qt from external filter

    Step 4: Drop pan

    • 16 bolts (varies year)
    • 10mm wrench
    • Pan may stick

Step 5: Inspect pan + magnet

    Magnet check:

  • Gray dust = normal
  • Brass = pump bushing wear
  • Steel pieces = C2 or planetary damage
  • Fluid color:

  • Red/orange = healthy
  • Dark brown = service overdue
  • Black/burnt = damage starting
  • Step 6: Replace internal filter

    • Filter mounted to valve body
    • Pull straight down (some require unbolting)
    • Note O-ring orientation
    • Install new filter with new O-ring
    • Lube O-ring with TES-295

    Step 7: Pan gasket

    • Clean mating surfaces
    • New rubber gasket
    • No sealant on rubber
    • Verify drain plug crush washer fresh

    Step 8: Reinstall pan

    • Hand-tighten all bolts
    • Torque cross pattern
    • Spec: 89 in-lb (7.4 ft-lb)
    • DO NOT over-tighten

    Step 9: Refill

    Location:

  • Allison 1000 uses dipstick tube (some)
  • Or fill port at side
  • Check service manual
  • Add fluid:

  • ~15 quarts initial refill
  • TES-295 ONLY
  • Hand-pour or use trans pump
  • Step 10: Check level

    Allison cold check:

  • Engine running
  • Trans warm to 100-130F
  • Pull dipstick
  • Should be at COLD mark
  • Allison hot check:

  • Trans at full operating temp (180F+)
  • Recheck dipstick
  • Should be at HOT mark
  • Add more if low:

  • Quart at a time
  • Recheck after each
  • Step 11: Allison Quick Learn (optional)

    Why:

  • TCM adapts to fluid characteristics
  • Fresh fluid changes friction modifiers
  • Quick Learn resets adaptive values
  • Required for:

  • After rebuild
  • After internal harness replacement
  • Not required for:

  • Routine fluid service
  • TCM adapts gradually
  • Time and cost

    DIY:

  • Parts: $355-$605
  • Time: 3-4 hours
  • Tools (one-time): $50-$150
  • Total: $405-$755
  • Shop:

  • Parts: $355-$605
  • Labor: $300-$500
  • Total: $655-$1,105
  • Common DIY mistakes

    Using Dexron VI:

  • WRONG fluid
  • Allison clutches fail in 5,000-15,000 miles
  • $5,000-$8,000 rebuild repercussion
  • Always TES-295
  • Skipping external filter:

  • Clogs over time
  • Pressure drop downstream
  • Both filters mandatory
  • Over-tightening pan bolts:

  • Warps pan
  • Leaks at gasket
  • 89 in-lb is correct (NOT ft-lb)
  • Wrong filter orientation:

  • Internal filter has direction
  • Wrong way = pressure drop
  • Verify before reassembly
  • Pay-back of DIY

    Dealer Allison service:

  • $650-$1,100 per service
  • 4 services in 200k miles = $2,600-$4,400
  • DIY Allison service:

  • $400-$600 per service
  • 4 services in 200k miles = $1,600-$2,400
  • Savings: $1,000-$2,000 over vehicle life
  • Verify TES-295 spec

    Approved brands:

  • Mopar TES-295 (correct spec)
  • AC Delco TES-295
  • Castrol Transynd (TES-295 approved)
  • ChevronTexaco DELO TES-295
  • NOT approved:

  • Dexron VI (wrong friction package)
  • Generic ATF (wrong spec)
  • Mercon V (Ford spec)
  • ATF+4 (Chrysler spec)
  • What burnt fluid means

    If fluid burnt at service:

  • Clutch wear started
  • Service buys time
  • Plan rebuild within 50k miles
  • Brown fluid:

  • Service overdue
  • Catch up now
  • Trans may recover with fresh fluid
  • Annual fluid check

    • Quick visual at each oil change
    • Pull dipstick, check color
    • Should be red/orange
    • Free preventive maintenance
