How to Change 4L80E Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step DIY Guide

The 4L80E is a workhorse trans but needs regular fluid service to live a full life. Heres how to do it yourself in 2-3 hours and save $200+ vs the shop.

  • What you need

    Parts:

  • Dexron VI fluid (12 quarts)
  • Internal filter (AC Delco TF-186 or equivalent)
  • Pan gasket (rubber or cork)
  • Tools:

  • 13mm socket (pan bolts)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Drain pan (15+ qt capacity)
  • Funnel + long-neck pour
  • Jack + jack stands
  • Cost:

  • Dexron VI (12 qts): $110-$180
  • Filter: $15-$30
  • Pan gasket: $15-$30
  • Total parts: $140-$240
  • Step 1: Warm trans

    • Drive 10-15 minutes
    • Operating temp 180F+
    • Park on level ground
    • Engine off

    Step 2: Raise and support

    • Jack stands
    • Drain pan under trans
    • Wheels chocked

    Step 3: Drop pan

    If pan has drain plug:

  • Remove plug, drain ~7 quarts
  • Then drop pan
  • If no drain plug:

  • Loosen pan bolts from one corner
  • Let fluid drain through opening
  • Catch in drain pan
  • Pan bolts:

  • 17 bolts on 4L80E pan
  • 10mm wrench
  • Pan may stick - gently pry
  • Step 4: Inspect pan

    Magnet check:

  • Fine gray dust = normal
  • Brass particles = pump bushing wear
  • Steel pieces = catastrophic damage
  • Aluminum flake = case wear
  • Fluid color:

  • Red/pink = healthy
  • Brown = service overdue
  • Burnt smell = damage
  • Pink/milky = water contamination
  • Step 5: Replace filter

    • Filter bolted to valve body
    • Pull straight down
    • New filter with new O-ring
    • Hand-tighten only

    Step 6: Pan gasket

    • Clean both mating surfaces
    • Replace rubber or cork gasket
    • NO sealant on rubber
    • Thin Permatex Ultra Black on cork (optional)

    Step 7: Reinstall pan

    • Hand-tighten all bolts first
    • Torque in cross pattern
    • Spec: 89 in-lb (7.4 ft-lb)
    • DO NOT over-tighten

    Step 8: Refill through dipstick

    • 4L80E has dipstick (unlike 6L80)
    • Add 6-7 quarts initially
    • Use Dexron VI ONLY

    Step 9: Cycle and check level

    Engine running:

  • Foot on brake
  • Cycle through all gears
  • Return to Park
  • Check dipstick:

  • Trans warm to operating temp
  • Engine idling
  • Pull dipstick, wipe, reinsert, pull
  • Should be in HOT range
  • Add more if low:

  • Half quart at a time
  • Recheck after each
  • Time and cost
