GM 6T70/6T75 Slipping, No Reverse & P0776: The 3-5-R Wave Plate Fix

If you drive a Chevy Malibu, Impala, Equinox, or Traverse, a GMC Acadia, a Buick Enclave or LaCrosse, or a Cadillac SRX/XTS, there's a good chance you have GM's 6T70 or 6T75 six-speed transaxle underneath you. It's a solid unit in most respects, but it has one signature failure that puts more of these cars on the lift than anything else: the 3-5-R waved plate cracks. When it lets go, you lose reverse, you get slipping and harsh or flared shifts in 3rd and 5th, and you set a P0776. Chase it as a solenoid problem and you'll spend money without fixing the car. Here's how to diagnose it correctly and what actually cures it.

The symptoms: what a broken 3-5-R waved plate feels like

The 3-5-R clutch is applied in three of the six ranges, so when its waved plate breaks, the failure shows up across the board. Per the Sonnax part documentation for the 6T70/6T75 drum saver kit, the classic symptom set is:

  • No reverse or a harsh reverse engagement
  • Slipping, flare, or harsh shifts in 3rd gear (no 3rd in worse cases)
  • Slipping, flare, or harsh shifts in 5th gear (no 5th in worse cases)
  • DTC P0776 - Pressure Control (PC) Solenoid 2 Stuck Off

In the field these units frequently store P0842 (Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch 1 Circuit Low) alongside the P0776, because the broken plate lets the 3-5-R piston overstroke and lose apply pressure. The tell is that the trouble follows the ranges that use the 3-5-R clutch, not a single gear. A car that slips in 3rd and 5th and has a reverse concern is pointing straight at the 3-5-R clutch, not at a random solenoid.

Diagnosis: don't just throw a solenoid at it

A P0776 names PC Solenoid 2, so the temptation is to replace the solenoid or the TEHCM and move on. On the 6T70/6T75, that's usually the wrong call. Work it in this order:

  1. Scan and record all codes. P0776 with a 3-5-R symptom pattern (reverse + 3rd + 5th) is your primary lead. A P0842 riding along strengthens it.
  2. Verify line and clutch pressure. If the 3-5-R circuit can't hold pressure and the solenoid and TEHCM test good, the pressure is escaping past a failed clutch, not a bad solenoid.
  3. Confirm mechanically. The only way to be certain is to pull the unit and inspect the 3-5-R clutch drum. A cracked or shattered waved plate - and the spline damage it causes inside the drum - confirms it.

Per Sonnax, every broken OE plate they studied separated at the same place: a tooth corner. Even plates that look intact to the eye can carry micro-fractures at those corners and be on the verge of letting go, so a "looks okay" plate is not a plate you leave in the car.

Why the OE waved plate breaks

Sonnax's teardown research points at the plate's geometry. The teeth on the OE waved plate are high-stress points that don't hold up to long-term fatigue. GM recognized the problem early on and decided the plates weren't sufficiently stress-relieved, so their fix was to shot-peen the plate to reduce stress and released that updated part. Installing the updated OE plate became standard practice throughout the rebuilding industry - and it is more durable than the early '07-'09 part - but Sonnax notes that both stock and rebuilt units running the newer plate, including Gen. 2 units, still fail in the field. Shot-peening helps, but it doesn't remove the teeth, and the teeth are where the cracks start.

When the plate finally comes apart, the broken pieces chew up the 3-5-R clutch housing splines. That's what turns a clutch job into an expensive one - a damaged drum traditionally meant buying a new housing.

The fix: the part that actually ends the failure

The permanent repair is to stop using a toothed waved plate. The Sonnax 3-5-R drum saver kit (part 124555K for the 6T70/6T75; 144555K for the smaller 6T40/45/50) pairs a shot-peened waved plate that has no teeth - eliminating virtually all the stress points - with a custom cupped steel plate. Two things make this the right fix instead of another OE plate:

  • It stops the comeback. With no teeth, there are no tooth-corner stress risers to crack, so the plate isn't fighting the same fatigue failure that kills OE and updated-OE plates.
  • It can salvage an already-damaged drum. Because the toothless plate rides in the spline area without hanging up, it lets a drum that's already been scored by a broken plate be reused instead of scrapped - no new housing required in many cases.

If your drum splines are damaged beyond what the drum saver can bridge, the drum itself has to be replaced. Either way, the waved plate goes in with the rounded edge of the internal splines facing the 3-5-R piston - install it backwards and you're setting up a premature repeat failure.

One trap on 2013+ units: mixing Gen. 1 and Gen. 2 parts

There are two generations of this transaxle, and their internals are not interchangeable in one spot that bites builders. Per a Transmission Digest Tech/Talk case by Wayne Colonna, a 2015 Equinox with the 6T75 came in with delayed engagement into drive and a slip in first - caused by a Gen. 1 1-2-3-4 clutch apply piston installed in a Gen. 2 transmission. The Gen. 2 piston's apply fingers are 0.147 in. taller (0.785 in. vs. the Gen. 1's 0.638 in.), and the Gen. 2 1-2-3-4 frictions are thinner (0.058 in. vs. 0.061 in.). Put the short Gen. 1 piston in a Gen. 2 unit and you create too much clutch clearance for the pack to hold - hence the delay and slip. Gen. 2 components appeared selectively at the start of the 2013 model year, and everything 2014 and later should be Gen. 2. Match your generation before you order clutches and pistons.

Replace-while-you're-in-there

Getting to the 3-5-R clutch means removing the transaxle and splitting the case - this is not a pan-drop repair. Since the labor is already spent, do it once:

  • Toothless 3-5-R waved plate and steel (drum saver kit) - the whole reason you're in there
  • Full 3-5-R clutch pack: frictions and steels, matched to your generation
  • The other waved plates in the unit while it's apart
  • All bonded pistons and rubber seals, plus a fresh gasket/seal set
  • The TEHCM/valve body and PC solenoids: inspect and test; replace if pressure testing flags them
  • Case and drum bushings
  • New filter, and refill with the GM-specified fluid for your unit (DEXRON VI on 6T70/75 applications)
  • The 3-5-R drum if the splines are damaged past salvage

Cost and effort

Difficulty is high: transaxle removal, full teardown of the 3-5-R drum, clutch pack service, and reassembly with correct clutch clearance. This is shop-level work or an experienced DIY rebuild, not a driveway afternoon. The parts spend on a drum saver kit and a clutch/rebuild kit is small next to the labor - which is exactly why installing another toothed OE plate is a bad bet. Doing the failure-prone part once, with the toothless plate, is what keeps the car off the lift a second time.

FAQ

Can I replace just the waved plate without a full rebuild? You can, but you're already inside the unit with the labor spent, and the surrounding clutch pack and seals have seen the same heat and debris. Replacing the frictions, steels, seals, filter and fluid at the same time is cheap insurance against a comeback.

Does a P0776 always mean the waved plate is broken? No - P0776 points at PC Solenoid 2. But when it shows up with a 3-5-R symptom pattern (reverse plus 3rd plus 5th slipping or missing), and the solenoid and TEHCM test good with pressure escaping, the waved plate and 3-5-R clutch are the likely cause. Confirm mechanically before you buy hard parts.

How do I know if I have a Gen. 1 or Gen. 2 unit? Model year is your first cut: 2007-2012 are generally Gen. 1, Gen. 2 parts started selectively in 2013, and 2014-and-later units should be Gen. 2. Confirm by the 1-2-3-4 apply piston finger height (0.638 in. Gen. 1 vs. 0.785 in. Gen. 2) before ordering clutches and pistons.
