Ford Mustang Clutch Replacement: Signs, What the Kit Includes, and Parts to Replace Together

Your Mustang's engine revs climb but the car does not keep up, the pedal feels different, or first gear started to grind. Those are the classic signs of a worn clutch, and the job behind them is bigger than swapping one part. This guide covers how to confirm the clutch is the problem, what a clutch kit actually contains, and which parts you should replace in the same sitting so you do not pull the transmission twice.

Signs Your Mustang Clutch Is Worn Out

Clutch Masters' Mustang clutch guide lists the symptoms to watch for:

  • Slipping: engine RPM rises without matching acceleration, most obvious on hills or hard throttle. The slip gets worse under load and builds heat.
  • Hard shifting: resistance at the shifter, grinding, or gears that will not engage point to a clutch that is not fully releasing.
  • Noises: a squeak when you press the pedal points toward the release bearing; grinding on engagement suggests a worn disc or damaged flywheel; chatter or shudder suggests glazed or contaminated surfaces; a rattle as you release the pedal can mean worn pressure plate springs.
  • Pedal problems: a spongy pedal points to the hydraulic side, while an unusually stiff pedal can point to the pressure plate. A changed engagement point is a sign of progressive wear.
  • Burning smell: the friction material on the disc burning from continuous slip, usually after hard driving or track use.

The same source notes that aggressive driving, extra torque from engine mods, hot weather, stop-and-go traffic and poor maintenance all shorten clutch life.

Rule Out the Hydraulics First

A spongy pedal or a clutch that will not release is not always a worn disc. If the pedal feels soft, check the fluid level and look for leaks at the hydraulic components before you commit to pulling the transmission. If the pedal is firm and the engine flares under load, the friction parts are the likely cause.

What a Mustang Clutch Kit Includes

It depends on the kit, so read the list for the exact part number. A typical aftermarket kit contains a pressure plate, a friction disc, a release (throwout) bearing, a pilot bearing where the car uses one, and an alignment tool.

The ACT Mod-Twin kits we list for the 2018-2023 and 2024-2026 GT go further. ACT's product description for the T1SS-F12 states that the kit includes a CNC-machined, dynamically balanced flywheel, pressure plate cover, diaphragm spring, friction plates, the Mono-Drive hub assembly, a floater, the Monoloc collar, a release bearing, an alignment tool and a pilot bearing where applicable. ACT also states that Mod-Twin clutches are fully rebuildable and that replacement discs can be ordered separately. Because the flywheel ships in the box, a new kit of this type replaces the stock flywheel rather than reusing it.

ACT 18-23 Mustang GT Mod-Twin 10.5 HD Sprung Street Clutch Kit (T1SS-F12): includes flywheel, release bearing and alignment tool per the listing.

Why Newer Mustangs Are Different

The stock setup on the 2018 GT is a dual-mass design. According to S3 Magazine's coverage of a 2018 Mustang clutch upgrade, the transmission on that car pilots in the flywheel rather than in the crankshaft as on the earlier S197 and S550 cars. That detail is why a clutch and flywheel for a 2018-and-newer GT must be matched as a set to the year, which is exactly how the F12 (2018-2023) and F17 (2024-2026) kits above are separated.

Replace Together: The Parts List

Everything below sits behind the transmission or is disturbed when it comes out. Doing it at once saves a second teardown.

  • Pressure plate and friction disc: always replaced as a pair. A new disc against a worn pressure plate wears out early.
  • Release (throwout) bearing: cheap compared with the labor to reach it.
  • Pilot bearing or bushing: where the car uses one, replace it while the old one is exposed.
  • Flywheel: inspect it. Clutch Masters' flywheel guide says a conventional steel flywheel with light glazing or shallow grooves can be resurfaced within spec, but cracks, deep scoring, heat checking, blue heat spots or excessive warping mean replacement. It also says dual-mass flywheels are not suitable for standard resurfacing and usually need replacement. Our article on when to replace the flywheel during a clutch job goes deeper.
  • Clutch hydraulics: if the pedal felt spongy, replace the slave or master cylinder now. See our clutch hydraulics collection.
  • Rear main seal or leaks: if oil is present on the bellhousing side, fix it now or it will contaminate the new disc.

Single-Mass or Dual-Mass: Which Way to Go

If your car has the factory dual-mass flywheel and you are choosing a replacement, our comparison of single-mass vs dual-mass flywheel for the Mustang GT covers the trade-offs in feel and noise. If you also plan to add power, read our Mustang GT clutch stage guide before you order, so you buy the clutch once.

Cost and Effort

This is a transmission-out job: driveshaft, shifter, clutch hydraulics and the transmission all come off, so it needs a lift or solid jack stands, a transmission jack and patience. The kit is the biggest cost, and the extra bearings and hydraulic parts are small by comparison, which is the whole argument for replacing them in the same pass. Torque the pressure plate bolts evenly and use the alignment tool so the disc is centered before the transmission goes back in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Mustang clutch is slipping?

Engine RPM rises faster than road speed, especially under load such as hill climbs or hard acceleration, and you may smell burning friction material.

Do I have to replace the flywheel with the clutch?

Not always on a conventional steel flywheel that is within spec, since it can be resurfaced. Cracks, deep scoring or heat damage call for replacement, and dual-mass flywheels are generally replaced rather than resurfaced. Kits like the ACT Mod-Twin ship with their own flywheel.

Which clutch kit fits my Mustang GT?

Match the model year and engine in the listing title. We stock 2018-2023 and 2024-2026 Mustang GT kits and an 1986-1995 Mustang twin-disc kit; check the part number against the listing before ordering.
