The Chrysler 62TE is the six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic behind a huge chunk of the minivan and mid-size fleet on the road today: Town & Country, Grand Caravan, Journey, Avenger, 200, Sebring, Pacifica, the Ram ProMaster van, and the VW Routan. When one of these acts up, the complaint is almost always the same story — it shifts hard, slips or hangs between gears, and eventually drops into limp mode where you’re stuck in second or third and the check-engine light is on. This guide walks the diagnosis the way a builder does, and explains why simply throwing a new solenoid pack at it fixes some of these cars and comes right back on others.
The Symptoms: What a Failing 62TE Actually Does
Classic 62TE trouble looks like this:
- Harsh, banging shifts — especially the 1-2 and the 2-3, worse when the trans is hot.
- Slipping or flare — the engine revs but the van doesn’t move with it, or there’s a hesitation before it grabs.
- Limp mode — the module defaults to a single gear (usually 2nd or 3rd) to protect the unit. A telltale of a heat-sensitive solenoid pack: limp mode hits after the trans warms up, then clears again after it sits and cools.
- Delayed or no Reverse, and no engine braking when you select Low.
On the scan tool you’ll typically see pressure and gear-ratio codes: P0868 (transmission fluid pressure low), gear-ratio errors like P0731 (1st gear), P0732, and P0735, or a shift-solenoid performance code such as P0766 for shift solenoid “D.” Gear-ratio and low-pressure codes are exactly what forces the module into limp mode.
Diagnosis: Work It In Order
1. Fluid first, always. The 62TE is a Chrysler ATF+4 unit. Low, burnt, or contaminated fluid mimics almost every solenoid symptom on the list. Pull the dipstick (or check level per the service procedure), smell it, and look at the color before you condemn a single part.
2. Pull the codes and read the pattern. A cluster of pressure and gear-ratio codes points at the hydraulic/electronic side — the solenoid pack and valve body — rather than a mechanical clutch failure. A single isolated solenoid code narrows it further.
3. Understand what the solenoid pack is. Per the Sonnax 62TE solenoid identification bulletin, the 62TE pack contains six shift solenoids, one line-pressure solenoid, a temperature sensor, and five pressure switches, all reading through a single 23-way connector. Note what is not in the pack: the line-pressure sensor and the TCC variable-force solenoid bolt directly onto the valve body separately. Of the six shift solenoids, two are normally open and four are normally closed — they look identical, so don’t assume. Sonnax notes solenoid resistance should be tested at roughly 70°F for a valid reading.
4. Test, don’t guess. Check solenoid resistance against spec and watch for an intermittent that only misbehaves once the pack is hot — that heat-sensitive behavior is the fingerprint of a pack whose internal contact board has started to flex and break connection with heat cycling.

The Real Fix — and Why a New Pack Sometimes Doesn’t Hold
If the pack tests bad electrically — out-of-spec resistance, or a confirmed hot intermittent — replacing the solenoid pack is the correct repair, and on a lot of these cars that’s the whole job. But there is a well-documented trap on the 62TE that sends builders chasing their tails: valve-body bore wear.
Per Sonnax’s tech write-up on diagnosing 62TE low/reverse switch valve issues, the low/reverse switch valve and the low clutch switch valve each act as a one-way (checkball-style) valve for their clutches in Reverse and Drive. The valves get heavily side-loaded in their bores — the valve’s diameter is dimensionally close to its length — and they wear. Once that bore wears, fluid cross-leaks past the one-way valve and exhausts through the manual valve, dropping apply pressure. The result is burnt low/reverse clutch, delayed or no Reverse, and no engine braking in Low. Bolt a brand-new solenoid pack onto a valve body with worn bores and the symptoms march right back in a couple of weeks, because the leak was never in the pack.
The durable fix for worn bores is a sleeve repair. Sonnax offers a drop-in low/reverse switch checkball sleeve kit (part 92835-43K) and an oversized version (92835-47K) for bores with extreme wear; both use inboard and outboard sleeves plus a checkball so fluid moves only one way through the orifice, restoring apply pressure. This is documented in the same Sonnax bulletin and in Transmission Digest’s coverage of the kits. If you’re rebuilding, a Sonnax-updated reman valve body is the shortcut that closes this door for good.
Replace-While-You’re-In-There
The pan is off and the valve body is in your hand — do the whole job once:
- Filter and fresh ATF+4. Non-negotiable any time you’re in the pan.
- Shift shaft bushing. The OE shift-shaft bushing is nylon, which absorbs atmospheric moisture, swells, and splits — letting water and dirt into the case from the top and causing shudder complaints. Per Sonnax’s 62TE shift shaft bushing bulletin, epoxy repairs and OE-nylon replacements just restart the failure clock; the shift shaft saver kit (part 262991-04K) uses a Delrin bushing that won’t absorb moisture.
- Low/reverse and low clutch switch valve bores. If you had any Reverse or Low complaint, address the bores now with the sleeve kit rather than hoping.
- Line-pressure sensor / TCC VFS. Remember these mount separately from the pack — inspect them if your codes point at pressure or converter lockup.
Cost and Effort Framing
Replacing the solenoid pack on a 62TE is a mid-level job: drop the pan, drain the fluid, unbolt and unplug the pack, and swap it. A competent DIYer with a lift or ramps and a torque wrench can do it in an afternoon; a shop typically bills a couple of hours. Going deeper into the valve body for bore sleeving is builder-level work — more time, more precision, and vacuum-testing the bores is genuinely fiddly on this unit — but it’s the difference between a repair that lasts and a comeback. The parts themselves (solenoid pack, sleeve kit, bushing kit, filter, fluid) are far cheaper than a reman transaxle, which is why nailing the diagnosis pays.
FAQ
Can I just replace the 62TE solenoid pack and be done? Sometimes yes — if the pack fails electrically and the valve-body bores are still good. But if you have a Reverse, Low, or burnt-clutch complaint, a new pack alone will not hold; the low/reverse and low clutch switch valve bores need to be checked and sleeved. That’s the number-one reason a “fixed” 62TE comes back.
What fluid does the 62TE take? Chrysler ATF+4. Don’t substitute a generic multi-vehicle fluid; the shift feel and clutch friction are calibrated around ATF+4.
Will a scan tool tell me exactly which solenoid is bad? Codes point you at the circuit — a shift-solenoid performance code or a gear-ratio code narrows the field — but confirm with a resistance test at about 70°F, and remember two of the six shift solenoids are normally open and four are normally closed, so a “different” reading isn’t automatically a failure.
