A used truck with a bad trans is a $3,000-6,000 surprise. Spotting trans problems before you buy saves money. Here's the complete inspection guide.
Pre-purchase trans inspection
Step 1: Visual inspection (before test drive)
Look under the truck:
- Trans fluid leak around pan
- Trans fluid leak around bellhousing
- Trans fluid leak from cooler lines
- Driveshaft U-joint condition
- Engine and trans mount condition
Smell test:
- Trans fluid should NOT smell burnt
- Engine bay should not smell of burnt trans fluid
Step 2: Cold-start check (engine off, then start)
- Listen for unusual whining from front of trans (pump issues)
- Watch trans temp gauge if equipped
- Note any rough engagement when shifting to Drive
Step 3: Dipstick inspection (engine running, warm)
- Pull dipstick (if accessible)
- Wipe clean, reinsert, pull again
- Color should be: Pinkish-red (Dexron VI), red (Mercon LV), red-pink (ATF+4)
- Bad signs: Dark brown, black, burnt smell, strawberry milkshake (cooler leak)
Step 4: Pan inspection (if possible)
- If seller allows: drain a sample
- Look for metal flakes (hard part failure)
- Look for plastic/rubber (seal failure)
- Look for sludgy brown paste (clutch wear)
Test drive red flags
What to test:
#### 1. Cold-start engagement
- Move from Park to Reverse: should engage smoothly
- Move to Drive: should engage smoothly
- Hesitation or harsh engagement = problem
#### 2. Highway shift quality
- Drive 30-65 mph
- Trans should shift smoothly through all gears
- Note any:
- Flares between shifts
- Harsh shifts
- Hunting between gears
- High RPM at cruise (missing overdrive)
#### 3. Heavy acceleration
- Floor it from 30 mph
- Trans should kick down to lower gear
- Should accelerate smoothly
- Note any:
- Slipping under load
- Failure to downshift
- Severe vibration
#### 4. Reverse test
- Multiple reverse engagements
- Should engage smoothly each time
- Note any delays or slipping
#### 5. Stop-and-go test
- City driving with stops
- Note shift behavior
- Watch trans temps if equipped
Red flag symptoms:
- Burnt smell during driving
- Slipping under any load
- Won't engage gears
- Shift flares
- Harsh shifts
- Stuck in one gear (limp mode)
- Check engine light related to trans

Get pre-purchase inspection
When to spend $100-200 on PPI:
- Vehicle over $15,000
- Trans is a concern from test drive
- Vehicle has high miles (150K+)
- You can't access dipstick yourself
What PPI should include:
- Trans pan drop and inspection
- Pressure test
- Scan tool diagnosis for codes
- Test drive by mechanic
- Written report
Cost: $100-300 typically, saves thousands
How much to negotiate down
If trans shows minor issues:
- Negotiate $500-1,500 off price
If trans shows major issues:
- Negotiate $3,000-5,000 off (cost of rebuild)
- Or walk away entirely
If trans is great:
- No discount needed for trans
When to walk away
Walk away if:
- Burnt fluid smell
- Strawberry milkshake fluid (water in fluid)
- Trans won't engage gears
- Major leaks
- Multiple slipping issues
- Codes for major component failures
- Owner won't allow inspection
Negotiate if:
- Minor issues that match cheap fixes
- Cooler line leak (cheap to fix)
- Single solenoid issue
- Just needs fluid service
Specific year warnings
6L80 2015-2018:
- Famous TCC shudder issue
- Many trucks need TCC replacement
- Discount $2,000+ if not fixed
68RFE early years (2007.5-2010):
- Known direct clutch issues
- HD parts often missing
- Verify tune history
4L60E in 1500 trucks (2006+):
- Often tow-stressed
- Check pan condition carefully
