AS68RC P0746 & P0776: Why Replacing the Solenoid Doesn't Fix It

If you own a 2007-2012 Ram 3500, 4500, or 5500 with the 6.7L Cummins behind an Aisin AS68RC, there's a good chance you already know this pain: the truck sets a P0746 or P0776, you replace the linear solenoid, clear the code, and it drives fine for a week or two. Then the same code comes right back. You replace the solenoid again. Same result. That intermittent, comes-and-goes behavior is the tell that you're chasing the wrong part.

Here's the short version before we dig in: on the AS68RC, these two codes are usually not a bad solenoid at all. They're a worn valve body damper bore. Until you address that bore, you can throw solenoids at it forever and the code keeps coming back.

What P0746 and P0776 Actually Mean

The scan tool almost never gives you the full story on these two. According to Sonnax's tech bulletin on AS68RC performance codes, the complete definitions are longer than the four or five words your scanner shows:

  • P0746 — Clutch pressure control solenoid A / linear solenoid A "performance" or "stuck off," which also includes a pressure switch 1 mechanical fault.
  • P0776 — Clutch pressure control solenoid B / linear solenoid B "performance" or "stuck off," which also includes a pressure switch 2 mechanical fault.

That word "performance" is the key. Per Sonnax, "performance" means a mechanical problem inside the hydraulic circuit of the solenoid, not necessarily the solenoid itself. And on a Dodge Ram scan tool the pressure-switch portion of the definition is usually hidden, so most people never see that a pressure switch is even in play. That's exactly why the solenoid keeps getting condemned.

The Real Root Cause: A Worn Damper Bore

When linear solenoid B drops its duty cycle, control valve 2 shifts and connects line pressure to clutch apply pressure. That clutch apply pressure is routed to a damper valve and to pressure switch 2. Sonnax's technical specialist calls this damper "the most common root cause of a pressure switch 1 or 2 code."

Here's why: the bore that the damper piston rides in wears out over the miles. Once it's worn, pressure leaks past the piston. That leak slows down how quickly the pressure switch responds and closes. The TCM commands a gear change, watches for the pressure switch to change state as feedback, and when the switch doesn't flip fast enough, the TCM assumes the switch is stuck off and sets the code. The solenoid was fine the whole time. Both dampers feeding pressure switches 1 and 2 are identical, and there's a third damper on the solenoid feed circuit that wears the same way.

How to Diagnose It Right (Before You Buy Another Solenoid)

  1. Get the full code definition. Don't stop at "linear solenoid A performance." Read the complete text and note the pressure-switch mechanical fault language. That alone reframes the whole diagnosis.
  2. Stop replacing solenoids on repeat. If you've already put a new linear A or B solenoid in twice and the code comes back intermittently, the solenoid is not your problem. That repeat pattern is the diagnostic clue.
  3. Vacuum-test the damper pistons. With the valve body out, vacuum-test the exhaust port at the spring end of each damper piston. Per Sonnax, a new piston and casting will hold 20+ inches of mercury (in-Hg). A worn bore can drop as low as 4 in-Hg. Critically, move the piston side to side while testing — if the vacuum reading drops as you rock it, the bore is worn.
  4. Check the relief pistons too. The upper valve body has cooler-relief and solenoid-feed-relief pistons that test the same way from the back side of the casting. On the closely related AS66RC and AS69RC, Sonnax notes these three relief valves wear similarly.

The Fix: Recondition the Bore, Install an Oversized Valve

Once you confirm a worn bore, replacing the solenoid again is throwing money away. The correct repair is to recondition the worn bore and drop in an oversized valve to re-establish the right clearance. Sonnax offers two kits for this on the AS68RC, both sold as a set of three:

  • Oversized linear solenoid output dampener valve — part No. 99740-04K
  • Oversized linear solenoid feed dampener valve — part No. 99740-05K, which addresses the feed dampeners in the lower valve body casting that, once worn, cause low solenoid feed pressure, gear-ratio errors, and pressure switch 1/2 performance codes.

Per Sonnax, these oversized valves are recalibrated to meet the original OE pressures using the factory dampener springs. The payoff is bigger than just clearing a code: AS68RC valve bodies are expensive and genuinely hard to find, so reconditioning the bore instead of scrapping the casting can save the whole unit.

Replace-While-You're-In-There

The valve body has to come off to service the dampers, and on a diesel this size the labor to get there is the expensive part — not the parts. While the pan is down and the valve body is out, take care of the wear items that live right next to your problem:

  • All linear and on/off shift solenoids — if any are original and high-mileage, do them now while access is free.
  • Both pressure switches (1 and 2) — cheap insurance since they're central to these codes.
  • Internal wiring harness — a known AS68RC weak point per Next Gen Drivetrain's failure breakdown, and it plugs into the same circuits you're already testing.
  • Filter and a full fluid fill with the correct spec (see the FAQ below).
  • Fresh pan gasket and a clean, magnet-checked pan.

Cost and Effort Framing

This is an intermediate-to-advanced job. Dropping the pan and pulling the valve body on an AS68RC is a solid afternoon for a competent DIYer; figure roughly 3 to 5 hours of labor if the truck is on a lift and you have the fluid and a filter ready. The bore-reconditioning step is what raises the bar — it wants a reamer/valve kit and patience, so if you're not set up for valve body work, a local builder can machine and install the Sonnax kit for you. Either way, the math is simple: the dampener valve kit and a filter cost a fraction of a remanufactured AS68RC valve body or a full trans, and they fix the actual cause instead of masking it.

Probably not. On the AS68RC, a repeating P0746 (or P0776) after a fresh solenoid points to a worn damper bore leaking pressure and slowing the pressure switch, per Sonnax. Vacuum-test the damper before you condemn another solenoid.

What transmission fluid does the AS68RC take?
The AS68RC uses an Aisin JWS 3309 / Type T-IV spec slip-controlled ATF.
