The Allison 1000 C2 clutch is the most-loaded clutch pack in the trans. Tuned Duramax trucks chew through factory C2 in tens of thousands of miles. Here's the HD upgrade path.
What the C2 clutch does
The Allison 1000 C2 clutch:
- Engages 2nd, 4th, and 5th gears (multi-gear use)
- Carries highest sustained load
- Critical to tow performance
- Most heat-loaded in tuned applications
When working: clean apply across multiple gears.
When failing: 2nd/4th/5th slip, burnt frictions in pan, rebuild required.

Why factory C2 fails in tuned applications
Friction count limitation:
- Stock C2: 5 frictions (most applications)
- HD upgrades: 6-7 frictions
- More friction = more capacity
Material limitation:
- Stock paper-based friction
- HD: Alto Red Eagle (carbon-Kevlar)
- Read our Alto vs Raybestos comparison
Apply force:
- Stock piston adequate for stock
- Tuning increases demand
- Apply piston may need upgrade
Heat damage:
- Allison runs hot under tow
- C2 sees most heat cycles
- Read our transmission temperature monitoring
Symptoms
Early stage:
- Slip in 2nd gear under load
- Slight flare on shifts
- May not have codes yet
Mid stage:
- Clear slip in 2nd, 4th, 5th
- Codes appear (P0731, P0734, P0735)
- Burning smell after tow
Late stage:
- Multiple gear failures
- Burnt friction material in pan
- Read our transmission pan inspection guide

HD C2 upgrade options
Add a friction (5 → 6):
- Most popular upgrade
- Requires thinner steel plates
- Total stack same height
- Cost: $80-150 extra in parts
Alto Red Eagle friction set:
- HD friction material
- Carbon-Kevlar based
- Better heat resistance
- Cost: $200-350 for set
Raybestos Stage-1:
- Quality alternative
- Better than stock
- Cost: $180-300 for set
- Read our Alto vs Raybestos comparison
Sonnax HD apply piston:
- Better apply force
- Less slip = less heat
- Cost: $200-400
Updated steels:
- Matched to HD frictions
- Critical to apply quality
- Cost: $80-150 set
When stock vs HD
Stock OK if:
- 100% stock Duramax
- No tuning planned
- Light tow only
- Daily driver
HD mandatory if:
- ANY engine tuning
- Sustained tow over 8,000 lb
- HD truck use
- Sled pull / race

Year-by-year notes
2001-2005 Allison 1000:
- Original C2 design
- HD upgrade mandatory for tune
2006-2010 Allison 1000:
- Updated factory C2
- HD upgrade still beneficial
2011+ Allison 1000:
- Best factory C2
- HD only for aggressive tune or race
Cost vs benefit analysis
Cost of HD upgrade:
- Approximately $300-600 over stock
- During rebuild only
Cost of redo if stock fails:
- Full rebuild: $3,000-5,000
- Plus labor downtime
Cost vs benefit:
- $300-600 vs $3,000-5,000
- Obvious decision for HD applications
