700R4 vs 4R70W: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
Two four-speed overdrive automatics, two very different philosophies. The GM 700R4 is a cable-and-governor unit from the carburetor era that bolts in without a computer. The Ford 4R70W is an electronically shifted, wide-ratio box rated for far more input torque but that will not shift a single time until something tells it to. If you are picking an overdrive for a swap, or trying to decide which one is worth rebuilding, the difference between them is not really horsepower. It is control.
Here is what actually separates them, backed by the factory and rebuilder data, plus what breaks on each one and what you should have in your hand before the pan comes off.
The short answer
Choose the 700R4 if you are behind a Chevy small-block or big-block, you want overdrive in a classic without adding a wiring harness, and you are comfortable setting a TV cable correctly. It is the lighter, shorter, simpler unit, and it has the deeper first gear.
Choose the 4R70W if you are behind a Ford (especially a modular 4.6L/5.4L), you need real torque capacity, or you want tunable shift points and lockup that you can actually calibrate. It is heavier and longer, and it requires either a factory PCM or a standalone controller.
They are not cross-shopped inside one engine bay very often, because the bellhousing decides for you. Where the comparison genuinely matters is a street rod or early truck build where the engine choice is still open, or when someone hands you both cores and asks which one to spend money on.
Gear ratios and what they feel like
Speedway Motors lists the 700R4 at 3.06:1 first, 1.62:1 second, 1.00:1 third, 0.70:1 overdrive, with a 2.29:1 reverse. The f150hub 4R70W spec sheet gives 2.84:1 first, 1.55:1 second, 1.00:1 third, and the same 0.70:1 overdrive, with a 2.23:1 reverse.

The 700R4 wins the launch on paper. A 3.06 first with a 3.42 rear axle gives an effective 10.47:1 starting ratio; the 4R70W's 2.84 gives 9.71:1 behind the same gear. In a heavy car that difference is felt off idle, and it is exactly why Sonnax notes the 700R4's steep first gear "gets heavy vehicles moving" in its performance build guide.
The 4R70W is still the wide-ratio unit in Ford's own family, though. OnAllCylinders documents that the AODE it replaced ran 2.40:1 first, 1.47:1 second and a 0.67:1 overdrive, so the 4R70W's 2.84 first was a meaningful step deeper within the Ford lineup. That is what the "W" in the name means: wide ratio. The "4R70" decodes as four-speed, rear-wheel drive, 700 lb-ft input torque.
Torque capacity: this is the real gap
This is where the two units stop being comparable. f150hub lists the 4R70W's maximum input torque capacity at roughly 516 lb-ft (700 N-m). Speedway Motors rates a stock 700R4 at 300 to 350 horsepower, with 500 to 600 horsepower possible once performance internals go in.
Sonnax's 700-R4 performance build guide is more optimistic than that, stating the unit is "still very capable in many applications up to about 750HP" — but read the rest of that page before you quote the number. That figure assumes a specific list of upgrades: a line pressure booster kit, a heavy-duty reaction shaft, a heavy-duty input housing and input shaft, a heavy-duty reaction shell, a 2nd gear super hold servo, a 4th gear dual servo, and an extra-wide intermediate band. A junkyard 700R4 with a filter change is not a 750-horsepower transmission.
Practical read: the 4R70W has more capacity out of the box. The 700R4 gets there, but you buy it in parts.
Size, weight, and fluid
The 700R4 is the smaller unit by a wide margin. Speedway lists it at 155 lbs dry and 170 to 175 lbs wet, 30.75 inches long in the standard version (28.875 inches for the Corvette unit), with roughly 11 quarts for a dry fill including the converter and about 5 quarts on a pan drop. It uses Dexron III in stock and high-mileage units; Speedway notes Dexron VI is appropriate for rebuilt and well-sealed units.
Monster Transmission lists the 4R70W at 220 to 230 lbs dry, about 24.25 inches long, with roughly 13.9 quarts including the torque converter and a 28-spline output shaft. Fluid is Mercon V (Motorcraft XT-5-QMC) per the f150hub spec sheet — not interchangeable with the GM fluid, and not a place to guess.
Note the trade: the Ford unit is 65 to 75 lbs heavier but about six inches shorter. In a tight tunnel that length matters more than the weight does.
Input and output splines
Speedway lists the 700R4 input shaft as 27-spline on early units and 30-spline from 1984 up, with a 27-spline output shaft as typical, and the giveaway 16-bolt pan that looks "square with a corner missing." If you are buying a used 700R4 core, confirm the input spline count before you order a converter — that 1984 change is the single most common mismatch on these.
What breaks: 700R4
The dominant failure on a 700R4 is not a part. It is an adjustment. Speedway Motors calls the throttle valve cable "the elephant in the room" with these transmissions, because improper adjustment causes premature failure and slipping. The TV cable is not a kickdown cable — it is the transmission's only input for line pressure. Set it loose and the unit runs low pressure at full throttle and burns clutches in short order.
Sonnax adds the wear side of the same circuit: in the 4L60/700R4 the steel throttle valve plunger continuously reciprocates in its aluminum sleeve, and the resulting wear lets throttle valve feed oil leak past the plunger, causing poor line rise and problematic detent downshifts. Sonnax also warns that most aftermarket carburetors and injection systems do not match OE TV cable pivot travel, which throws off pressure and shift timing even when the cable itself is adjusted "correctly" at the transmission end.

What breaks: 4R70W
The Ford unit fails hydraulically and in the drum. Sonnax reports that pressure regulator valve wear is common across the 4R70W, 4R70E, 4R75W, 4R75E and AODE family, with scoring on the EPC end of the valve producing reduced line pressure or low line rise. Their warning is worth repeating: if the valve looks that bad, the bore is compromised too, and bore wear is hard to see with the naked eye. Sonnax recommends vacuum testing the bore rather than just dropping in a new valve.
The overdrive servo pin is the other classic. Per Sonnax, in AODE-family units the O.D. servo pin wears the case bore, and the release oil leaking through the case can make the overdrive band drag or overheat the forward clutches. If the band overheats badly enough that it will not hold in 4th, you get a neutral condition and excessive roller clutch RPM on a 4-2 downshift re-engagement. That is how one leaking pin turns into an intermediate roller clutch, overdrive band, and forward clutch failure all at once.
OnAllCylinders documents two more: the cast iron direct clutch hub is prone to cracking, and the input shaft gradually walking rearward blocks lubrication feed orifices and starves the planetary bushings. The stamped steel forward clutch drum is also called out as comparatively weak, with forged aftermarket replacements available.
The fix: what to buy for each

Because the 700R4 shifts hydraulically, a valve body kit is a real tuning tool on this unit rather than a band-aid. Replace while you are in there
Both units are labor-heavy to remove. Do not put one back together without these:
- Torque converter. Never reuse one after a clutch failure. Debris from a burned pack lives in the converter and comes straight back out into the new build.
- Filter and pan gasket. Non-negotiable on both.
- Front pump seal and bushing. On the 4R70W in particular, given the documented input shaft walk and lube starvation issue, inspect the pump area carefully.
- 700R4: intermediate band and the 2nd gear servo. The band is the wear item behind most 700R4 slipping complaints.
- 4R70W: overdrive servo pin and the pressure regulator valve. Vacuum test the PR bore before you assume a new valve is enough.
- Cooler lines flushed, and the cooler itself replaced if the fluid was burned. A contaminated cooler will kill a fresh rebuild.
Cost and effort, honestly
Both are R&R jobs measured in a full day, not an afternoon. Pulling and reinstalling either transmission runs roughly 5 to 8 hours of labor in a home shop with a proper jack, more on a 4WD truck where the transfer case has to come out. A full teardown, cleaning, inspection, and reassembly adds another 6 to 10 hours if you have the bench space and the snap ring pliers.
Difficulty split: the 700R4 is the easier mechanical rebuild — no solenoids, no harness, no scan tool — but the harder unit to get right, because the TV cable setup afterward decides whether it lives. The 4R70W is the harder teardown and needs electronic control, but once it is calibrated it stays calibrated. If you are a first-time rebuilder without a scan tool, the 700R4 is the more forgiving project, provided you respect the cable.
The other cost nobody budgets: the 4R70W swap into a non-Ford or a pre-computer Ford needs a controller. FAQ
Can a 4R70W bolt to a Chevy engine?
Not without an adapter. The 4R70W uses an integrated Ford modular bellhousing pattern; the 700R4 uses the GM pattern with the compact one-piece bellhousing design Speedway describes. The bellhousing is usually what settles this decision before ratios ever enter the conversation.
Which one is stronger?
Stock for stock, the 4R70W, by a clear margin — roughly 516 lb-ft of rated input torque per f150hub, versus a 300 to 350 horsepower stock 700R4 per Speedway. Built for built, the gap narrows: Sonnax puts a fully upgraded 700R4 at around 750 horsepower with their component list installed.
Is the 700R4 the same as a 4L60?
Yes. Sonnax confirms GM changed the official name in 1989, about eight years after the 700R4 was introduced in 1982, and that the last year for most 700R4/4L60 models was 1993 before the electronically controlled 4L60-E took over. Most internal components carry over between the 700R4 and the later 4L60-E; the valve body is the biggest difference, cast iron with a cable and governor versus aluminum with solenoids. Is the 4R70W just a renamed AODE?
Not quite. OnAllCylinders explains they shared the same main case and valve body but ran different gearsets — the AODE at 2.40/1.47 with a 0.67 overdrive, the 4R70W at 2.84/1.55 with a 0.70 overdrive — and that the two designations coexisted for a period rather than one simply replacing the other.
