These two get cross-shopped constantly, and almost always for the same reason: someone is planning a swap, staring at two four-speed automatics with overdrive, and wondering which one is the "better" transmission. The honest answer is that they were never competing products. The GM 700R4 and the Chrysler 48RE come from different families, bolt to different engines, weigh almost 100 pounds apart, and control their shifts in completely different ways. Nothing meaningful interchanges between them.

What follows is a straight comparison of what each unit actually is, what fails on each, and the short list of rules that decide which one belongs in your truck.

The real difference is how they decide when to shift

This is the split that matters more than any horsepower claim.

The 700R4 is old-school hydraulic. Per Sonnax, it "has a cast iron valve body controlled by throttle cable and mechanical governor determining shift points." There is no computer. A cable running from the carburetor or throttle body tells the transmission how hard you are pushing, and a spinning mechanical governor tells it how fast you are going. Sonnax also notes that the 700R4 and the GM 4L60 are the exact same transmission - GM simply renamed it in 1989 - which is why 700R4 and early 4L60 parts cross over freely.

The 48RE is a hybrid. ATSG describes the 46RE/47RE/48RE family as "four speed fully automatic units with an electronic governor," where first through third are provided by clutches, bands and the low roller clutch, and fourth gear comes from a separate overdrive unit at the rear of the case. So the first three shifts are still hydraulic, moved by governor pressure exactly like an old Torqueflite - but that governor pressure is created by a solenoid the computer commands, not by a spinning weight.

ATSG also flags two calendar changes worth knowing before you buy a core: a push-in Transmission Range Sensor replaced the screw-in park/neutral switch in model year 2002, and starting with model year 2005, Dodge trucks with the 5.9L diesel got an electronically controlled Transmission Throttle Valve Actuator (TTVA) that replaced the throttle valve cable and all its linkage. An 03-04 48RE and an 05-07 48RE are not the same install.

Strength: what each one will actually take

The 48RE was built for one job - living behind a 5.9L Cummins in a 2500/3500 Ram. DieselHub lists max input torque at 560-570 lb-ft. ATSG's application chart shows the 48RE only ever appearing behind the 5.9L diesel and the 8.0L V10 in 2003-2007 Ram pickups.

Sonnax raises the internal pressure story in its 48RE hydraulic teardown: where a 46/47RE valve body raises line pressure roughly 10-15 psi in lockup or fourth gear, the 48RE valve body raises it approximately 22-28 psi in those same ranges. That extra clamping force on the torque converter clutch and overdrive clutch is exactly why Sonnax warns that dropping a 46/47RE valve body into a 48RE "seems to work ok at the start, but after time on the road, the vehicle comes back with a failed torque converter clutch or Overdrive clutch."

The 700R4 is lighter duty by design but not fragile. Sonnax's 700R4 build guide states the unit "is no slouch and still very capable in many applications up to about 750HP" when built with the right hard parts. That number assumes a real build - heavy duty reaction shaft, upgraded input housing, better servo and band - not a stock core.

One more 700R4 buying note from Sonnax: 1982-1984 units used a 27-spline input shaft, and 1985-later units use the stronger 30-spline design with the 298mm converter. Mixing them means updating the converter and stator shaft too.

Diagnosing each one before you spend money

700R4: check the TV cable first

The throttle valve cable is not a kickdown cable. It sets line pressure. A cable that is loose, stretched, or adjusted wrong will burn the unit down, and it is the single most common reason a healthy 700R4 dies early. Sonnax sells a TV Cable Corrector Kit specifically because so many builds get this wrong. Before condemning anything internal, confirm cable geometry and adjustment.

48RE: check governor pressure first

ATRA's GEARS technical article on the 42-48RE series is blunt about the diagnostic order: "whenever you have a shifting problem through the first three gear ranges, your first test is to connect a gauge and check governor pressure." Governor pressure should be near zero PSI at a stop and rise almost in step with vehicle speed. If governor pressure is correct, the computer controls are fine and the problem is mechanical inside the transmission.

Hard numbers from that same ATRA article, useful with a meter in hand:

  • Governor pressure solenoid resistance: about 3.8-4.0 ohms at 70°F.
  • Governor pressure transducer signal: about 0.60 volts at zero PSI, rising to about 4.8-4.9 volts at maximum pressure, which is 100 PSI.
  • At roughly 40 MPH the computer shuts the governor solenoid off entirely, sending mainline pressure to the shift valves to hold them shifted.
  • If the truck starts off in 3rd gear, it is in failsafe. Pull codes before touching anything else.

If the scan tool's desired and actual governor pressure agree with each other but disagree with your gauge, ATRA points at the transducer or its wiring. If actual and gauge both disagree with desired, look for a leak in the governor circuit, a blockage, or a bad solenoid. That is a cheap, decisive test, and the 48RE governor pressure solenoid 52118652 is the part it usually lands on.

Which one to choose

The decision is made by the engine, not by preference:

  • GM small block or big block, 2WD or 4WD, in a car or half-ton: 700R4. It is compact, weighs 155 lbs, bolts to a GM bellhousing pattern, and installs without a computer. Nothing about a 48RE makes sense here.
  • 5.9L Cummins in an 03-07 Ram 2500/3500: 48RE. It is what the truck came with, and the valve body pressure curve is calibrated to that engine's torque.
  • Towing heavy behind a gas GM engine: neither is the obvious pick - a 4L80E is the usual answer, since the 700R4's 3.06 first gear is great for launch but the unit was never a heavy-tow design.
  • Cross-brand swaps: understand that you are adapting a bellhousing, a converter, a torque tube of wiring, and in an 05-07 48RE a TTVA that expects Chrysler engine data. The 48RE's ~248 lbs and its need for a computer make it a poor donor outside a Ram.

Worth noting on gearing: the two are nearly identical in overdrive (0.70 vs 0.69) but very different off the line. The 700R4's 3.06 first is a launch ratio; the 48RE's 2.45 first is a load ratio. Sonnax even sells a 2.84 ratio input carrier kit to convert the 700R4 from its wide 3.06/1.63 spread to a close 2.84/1.55 for track use - the opposite direction from where a diesel tow rig wants to go.

The fix: what to buy when it is time to open one up

For a 700R4, a deluxe-level kit gets you the frictions, steels, bushings and the full gasket and seal set in one box. Replace while you are in there

  • 700R4: 2-4 servo and intermediate band, 3-4 clutch pack, pump bushing and rear stator support bushing, TCC lock-up solenoid, filter and pan gasket, and a correctly adjusted TV cable.
  • 48RE: governor pressure solenoid and transducer as a pair, output speed sensor, front and rear bands, overdrive clutch pack, filter and pan gasket, and the overdrive/lock-up solenoid.
  • Both: replace or properly rebuild the torque converter. Reusing a converter after a burned clutch pack puts the old debris right back in the new build.

Cost and effort

Neither of these is a first-time job. Removal and reinstall alone runs roughly 4-6 hours on a 700R4 in an accessible chassis, and closer to 6-9 hours on a 48RE in a 4WD Ram once you account for the transfer case, crossmember, and the sheer weight of a ~248 lb unit on a jack. Full teardown, cleaning, and rebuild adds another 6-10 hours for someone who has done it before, and considerably more for someone who has not.

The 48RE also demands a scan tool that reads Chrysler transmission data - desired versus actual governor pressure is the whole diagnostic, and you cannot see it without one. The 700R4 needs no scan tool at all but does need a pressure gauge and patience with the TV cable.

FAQ

Can I put a 48RE behind a GM engine?
Not without significant fabrication. You would need an adapter for the bellhousing pattern, a matching converter, and a controller to run the governor pressure solenoid, overdrive, and lockup. On a 2005-2007 unit you also have to deal with the TTVA that ATSG notes replaced the throttle valve cable. For a GM engine, a GM transmission is the sane path.

Is the 48RE just a heavy-duty 47RE?
Largely yes on gearing and layout, but not on hydraulics. Sonnax documents that the 48RE valve body raises line pressure roughly 22-28 psi in lockup and fourth gear versus 10-15 psi for the 46/47RE, and that swapping a 46/47RE valve body into a 48RE eventually kills the torque converter clutch or the overdrive clutch. Which is easier to find parts for?
