They are not interchangeable, they were never meant to do the same job, and the ratios tell you most of the story before you ever pull a pan.

The 700R4 in plain terms

Sonnax's build guide puts the timeline straight: the 700R4 was introduced in 1982 as a GM Turbo-Hydramatic unit, the name was officially changed to 4L60 in 1989, and 1993 was the last year for most models before the electronic 4L60-E took over (Sonnax, 700-R4 (4L60) Performance Transmission Build Guide). The 700R4 and the 4L60 are the exact same transmission under two names.

The controls are the real dividing line. Per Sonnax, the 700R4 uses a cast iron valve body controlled by throttle cable and a mechanical governor to determine shift points, while the later 4L60-E uses an aluminum valve body with computer-controlled solenoids. That is why the 700R4 is still the go-to for a carbureted or standalone-fuel car: it shifts on its own with no PCM, no TCM, and no tune.

Ratios are steep. Sonnax calls the 3.06 first gear "the steepest first gear ratio of any four-speed automatic," with a 3.06 to 1.63 shift that drops RPM hard on the 1-2 (Sonnax 2.84 Ratio Input Carrier Kit 77284-K). The published set is 3.059 / 1.625 / 1.000 / 0.696 with a 2.294 reverse (GM 4L60-E transmission specifications).

Applications ran deep across the GM light-duty rear-drive line: Impala, Blazer, Jimmy, Suburban, S-10, plus Corvette, Camaro/Firebird, Syclone and Typhoon, and it remains a popular swap unit (Sonnax GM 4L60 unit page).

Capacity: Sonnax states the 700R4 is "still very capable in many applications up to about 750HP" when built with their pump, servo, input housing and reaction shell upgrades. Stock, it is not a 750-horsepower transmission. That number is what a properly built one supports.

The 47RE in plain terms

The 47RE is the heavy-duty Chrysler unit found in 1994-2003 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 trucks, with a max input torque of roughly 450 lb-ft, an aluminum case, and a dry weight around 200 lbs without the converter. It uses ATF+4, holds 14.5-16.5 quarts dry with about a 4-quart service refill, and carries a 19,000 lb max GCWR (DieselHub, 47RH & 47RE specifications).

Gearing is much taller in first: 2.45 / 1.45 / 1.00 / 0.69, with a 2.21 reverse (DieselHub). Notice the overdrive ratio - 0.69 versus the 700R4's 0.696 - is effectively identical. Both units drop cruise RPM about 30 percent in top gear. The difference is entirely at the bottom of the box.

The "RE" suffix matters. The earlier 47RH used hydraulically controlled governor pressure; the 47RE controls governor pressure electronically, through a governor pressure solenoid and pressure transducer, while keeping a hydraulic valve body (DieselHub). That solenoid and transducer pair is the single most common electrical failure point on these trucks, and it is a pan-off job rather than a teardown.

Which one to choose

Adding overdrive to a classic GM. 700R4, without much debate. It is compact, it needs no computer, and the 3.06 first gear gets a heavy car moving. The catch is the TV cable: it is not a kickdown cable, and a misadjusted one will burn the transmission down. Sonnax sells a TV Cable Corrector Kit (AS1-01K) precisely because the OE geometry is easy to get wrong. Set it correctly before the first drive, not after.

Towing behind a diesel or a big-block Ram. 47RE. The 2.45 first gear and the heavier internals are built for load, and the 19,000 lb GCWR rating reflects it. Just budget for the governor pressure electronics and a converter, because they are wear items on a truck that has been worked.

Cross-shopping two used trucks. The 47RE is the heavier-duty unit by design and by rating. But a well-built 700R4 in a half-ton is not the weak link people assume - it is the neglected TV cable and the fried 3-4 clutch pack that kill them.

Replace-while-you-are-in-there

On either unit, once the pan is off or the case is split, these are the parts you do not want to leave out:

  • 700R4: full friction and steel set, 2-4 band, filter, complete gasket and seal set, bushings, and the TCC lockup solenoid. A single-source rebuild kit avoids the mismatched-clutch problem that comes from mixing suppliers.

Cost and effort

Neither is a driveway-in-an-afternoon job if you are going inside the case. Expect roughly 8-12 hours for a bench rebuild by someone who has done one before, plus R&R time for the vehicle. The 47RE governor pressure solenoid and transducer are the exception - that is a pan-drop and valve body access job, typically 2-3 hours, and it fixes a large share of erratic-shift complaints without a teardown. The 700R4 TV cable adjustment costs nothing but patience and is the highest-value thing you will do to one.

FAQ

Can I put a 47RE behind a Chevy engine, or a 700R4 behind a Cummins? Not without an adapter and a full conversion. Bellhousing patterns, converter pilots, input shafts, crossmember locations and driveshaft lengths all differ. Both are common swap targets only within their own families.

Do they share any parts? No. Different manufacturers, different planetary layouts, different valve bodies. Even within the Chrysler family the parts are fussier than people expect: Sonnax notes that 46/47RE and 48RE valve bodies "look extremely similar," but swapping one for the other leads to a failed torque converter clutch or overdrive clutch down the road, because the pressure regulator raises line pressure roughly 10-15 psi in 4th or in 3rd with lockup on to add clamping force (Sonnax, Dodge 48RE Hydraulic Features Revealed).

How do I tell which 47RE valve body I have? By the pressure sensor and the pump inlet. Sonnax's identification guide splits 46/47RE valve bodies into '99-and-earlier "early sensor" units and '00-and-later "late sensor" units, then further by small or large pump inlet. The early pressure sensor has an oval electrical connector; the late one is plastic and rectangular (Sonnax, Chrysler 42RE, 46RE, 47RE Valve Body Identification).
