The 6L80 and 6L90 are GM's 6-speed automatic family. Same case, same general design, but different internals for different duty cycles. People confuse them constantly. Here's the head-to-head.

Where each one originally went
6L80 applications
- Silverado/Sierra 1500 (2006-present) - Tahoe / Yukon (2007-present) - Suburban / Yukon XL (1500 only) - Cadillac Escalade - Camaro (2010-2015 V8 SS, some) - Corvette C6 / C7 base models (with manual option in some) - Some Express 1500 vans - Hummer H3 Alpha (V8)6L90 applications
- Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 HD (gas engine) - Suburban / Yukon XL 2500 - Express 2500/3500/4500 vans (gas) - Cadillac Escalade ESV (some configurations) - Hummer H2 (early years before discontinuation) - Some commercial chassis applicationsThe 6L90 is the heavier-duty version for trucks rated above 8,500 GVWR.
What's different internally
Clutch packs
- 6L80: Stock clutch pack counts - 6L90: Larger clutch packs in 2-6, 3-5-R, 4-5-6 positions (additional friction plates)Drums
- 6L80: Standard drum thickness - 6L90: Strengthened drums for higher torqueInput shaft
- 6L80: Standard input shaft - 6L90: Larger diameter input shaft, stronger materialOutput shaft
- 6L80: Smaller output - 6L90: Larger output (different driveshaft yoke size)Pump
- 6L80: Standard pump - 6L90: Higher-volume pump for additional cooling and clutch apply capacityValve body
Mostly similar, some HD-specific calibrations in 6L90.Tail housing
- 6L80: Shorter - 6L90: LongerThis is one of the easiest external identification points — the 6L90 is visibly longer.
How to identify which one you have
Method 1: Year + GVWR
- Half-ton truck/SUV (1500 series): 6L80 - 3/4 ton or 1 ton (2500, 3500): 6L90Method 2: Build sheet / RPO code
- MYC: 6L80 - MYD: 6L90The RPO sticker on most GM trucks is in the glove box or spare tire cover area.
Method 3: Visual identification
- Compare length: 6L90 is about 1 inch longer than 6L80 - Pan: similar shape but slightly larger on 6L90 - Tail housing bolt pattern: different between 6L80 and 6L90Method 4: Driveshaft yoke
The 6L90 uses a larger output yoke than the 6L80. The driveshaft slip yoke is one of the most reliable identification points.Parts interchange
Parts that interchange
- Most external sensors (TFT, speed sensors) - Filter (same filter for both) - Pan gasket - Most case-side hardware - Solenoid pack (often the same Mopar/AC Delco unit)Parts that DO NOT interchange
- Input shaft - Output shaft (and driveshaft yoke) - Clutch packs (different plate counts) - Pump (different volume) - Tail housing (different lengths) - Drum sets (HD vs standard)Master rebuild kits are separate
Don't try to use a 6L80 master kit on a 6L90 or vice versa. Different parts, different specifications.Common failures (both share these)
1. Wave plate cracking
Both transmissions use a wave plate in the TCC apply circuit. Both fail in the same way. Both need Sonnax updated wave plate during rebuild.2. 2-6 clutch pack burn
Common in tow trucks under load. Both 6L80 and 6L90 share this.3. TCC clutch wear
Standard PWM apply wear over time.4. Solenoid pack failure
Mopar solenoid pack issues (same pack in both).5. Valve body bushing wear
Both wear over time. Sonnax bore correction kits address.Common failures (6L90 specific)
1. Pump cavitation at high RPM towing
Some 6L90s in heavy commercial use cavitate the pump.Fix: Sonnax updated pump kit
2. Output shaft wear (heavy hauler use)
In severe duty, the larger output shaft can wear at the splines.Fix: Replacement output shaft during rebuild
Rebuild cost difference
6L80 rebuild
- Parts: $1,700-2,500 - Shop labor: $1,500-2,500 - Total installed: $3,500-5,0006L90 rebuild
- Parts: $2,000-2,900 (larger components, more HD parts) - Shop labor: similar - Total installed: $4,000-5,500About $500 more for 6L90 due to larger clutch packs and HD components.
Performance build differences
6L80 for tuned 6.2L LT applications
The 6L80 is at its limit for 600+ HP LT4 (supercharged) applications. Built 6L80s handle it but require all HD upgrades.6L90 for tuned 6.2L L8T applications
The 6L90 has more headroom. Same tuned engine in HD chassis with 6L90 is less stressed. For seriously high HP (700+), some builders prefer to swap from 6L80 to 6L90 internals — adding the heavier components into the 6L80 case where possible.
Fluid
Both use Dexron VI. Same spec.
Capacity:
- 6L80: about 11-12 quarts total
- 6L90: about 12-13 quarts total
Service interval: 50K miles for normal use, 30K for tow/severe duty.
6L80 vs 8L90 — the successor
The 8L90 (2015+) replaced the 6L80 in many applications. Different transmission, NOT related to 6L80 internally.
If you have a 2015+ half-ton GM truck, check carefully — some applications continued with 6L80, others switched to 8L90.
Should you swap 6L80 for 6L90?
For half-ton trucks pushed to performance levels (tuned LS or LT swaps), the 6L80 → 6L90 swap is possible but involved.
Requirements:
- 6L90 core ($800-1,500 used)
- Driveshaft modification (different yoke and length)
- Crossmember modification
- Wiring (usually OK, but verify)
- Possibly new mounts
Total swap cost: $2,500-4,500 with quality 6L90.
For most owners, building a 6L80 with HD internals is more cost-effective than swapping to 6L90.
What about 6L80/6L90 in Corvette and Camaro?
The 6L80 in Corvette C6/C7 and Camaro SS is the same basic transmission as truck applications but with sport-tuned calibration. Same rebuild approach, but TCM programming differs.
For track-use Corvette/Camaro, specialty shops build 6L80s with HD friction packs and performance valve body kits. Same parts available for truck applications.
