The 5R110W TorqShift is Ford's 5-speed automatic behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke diesels (2003-2010). It's a stout transmission designed for the heavy-duty diesel torque, but the 6.0L's heat issues and the 6.4L's high stock output mean these transmissions take a beating.
If you have a Super Duty with a TorqShift, here's what you need to know.
The basics
Years and applications
- 2003-2007 F-250/F-350 Super Duty: 6.0L Powerstroke + 5R110W - 2008-2010 F-250/F-350/F-450/F-550 Super Duty: 6.4L Powerstroke + 5R110W - 2003+ E-Series vans: 6.0L Powerstroke + 5R110W - 2008+ Excursion (last year): 6.0L Powerstroke + 5R110WSpecs
- 5-speed automatic with overdrive - Electronically controlled - Rated for ~570 ft-lb input torque stock - Real-world capability: 800+ ft-lb with proper buildWhy it's called "TorqShift"
Ford marketing name. The actual model is 5R110W. You'll see both names used.Common failures
1. Overdrive direct clutch burn (catastrophic)
Symptoms: Slipping in OD, hard slamming downshifts, no OD at all.Cause: The 5R110W has a known weakness in the overdrive direct clutch. Under tuning or heavy towing, it burns.
Fix: Must replace OD direct clutch pack and often the entire OD planetary. Performance upgrades available (HD friction packs, billet drum).
2. Forward clutch wear
Symptoms: Slipping in 1st and 2nd, eventual no-forward.Cause: Same as most autos — mileage + heat + frictions wear out.
Fix: Full forward clutch pack replacement (Raybestos Stage-1 for diesel duty).
3. Solenoid pack failure
Symptoms: Multiple DTCs (P0750-P0762 range), erratic shifting, limp mode.Cause: Heat damages the solenoid pack over time. Common after 100K+ miles.
Fix: Replace solenoid pack (Motorcraft or quality aftermarket). About $300-600 part cost.
4. Valve body wear
Symptoms: Harsh shifts, slipping under specific conditions, codes that come and go.Cause: Valve body bore wear at the EPC and OD apply circuits.
Fix: Sonnax valve body upgrade kits + bore correction. Essential on any tuned truck.
5. Pump issues
Symptoms: Low line pressure, slow engagement, all gears feel weak.Cause: Pump bushing or pump body wear.
Fix: Pump rebuild kit + bushing replacement. Sonnax has updated kits.
6. TCC apply issues
Symptoms: TCC shudder at cruise, P0741 codes, eventual converter failure.Cause: TCC clutch wear from PWM heat cycling, same as every modern auto.
Fix: New converter + TCC apply piston upgrade (Sonnax).
What kills 5R110W transmissions in 6.0L Powerstrokes
The 6.0L Powerstroke has known cooling issues. When the engine runs hot, the transmission also runs hot because they share cooling loops. This is a common failure path:
1. EGR cooler fails or restricted → coolant temps climb
2. Oil cooler restricts → engine oil temps climb
3. Trans cooler in radiator gets less cooling
4. ATF temps spike under load
5. Frictions cook
6. Trans fails
Fixing the 6.0L's cooling issues (EGR delete, oil cooler upgrade, larger radiator) BEFORE the trans dies extends its life significantly.
What kills 5R110W transmissions in 6.4L Powerstrokes
The 6.4L makes more power than the 6.0L. Stock 6.4L torque is at the upper end of what the 5R110W can handle. Add tuning (very common) and the trans is overstressed:
1. Tuning brings torque to 800-1000 ft-lb
2. OD direct clutch is the first to fail
3. Forward clutch fails soon after
4. Solenoid pack fails from heat
5. Without aggressive cooling, the whole trans fails progressively
Rebuild kit recommendations
Stock-power 6.0L Powerstroke
- Master rebuild kit with Raybestos Stage-1 frictions - All steels, sealing rings, bushings, seals - Solenoid pack replacement - Filter and pan gasket - Stock-style torque converter - Cooling system upgrade BEFORE rebuild (essential) - Parts cost: $1,500-2,200Stock-power 6.4L Powerstroke
- Same as above, but step up to HD friction packs (Raybestos Pro Series) - Sonnax valve body bore correction kit - TransGo HD shift kit - Larger external cooler - Parts cost: $1,800-2,600Tuned 6.0L or 6.4L (300-500 HP additional)
- All of the above - HD OD direct clutch pack (extra plate) - Sonnax billet input shaft - Custom triple-disc converter (BD, ATS, Goerend, Edge) - Performance valve body - Parts cost: $2,800-4,200Heavy-duty deleted/tuned 6.4L (sled puller, race)
- All of the above - Billet output shaft - Sonnax HD pump kit - Manual valve body or paddle shifter setup (for race only) - Largest cooler available - Parts cost: $4,000-6,500Cost summary
DIY rebuild parts only
- Stock: $1,500-2,200 - Tuned/towed: $2,500-4,000 - Race build: $4,000-6,500Shop rebuild installed
- Quality diesel shop: $3,500-5,500 - Performance shop: $5,000-7,500 - Specialty diesel performance: $6,000-9,000Built reman
- Quality built-and-shipped 5R110W: $4,500-7,000 - BD or Goerend built unit: $5,500-9,000Fluid
Mercon SP (2003-2007) or Mercon LV (2008+). Verify by year — using the wrong one causes shudder.
Capacity: about 17 quarts total, 7 in the pan.
Service interval:
- Stock: 30,000 miles
- Tuned/towed: 15-20,000 miles
- Race: every 1-2 races
5R110W fluid life is short under stress. Do NOT extend intervals.
Cooling is the #1 priority
Every 5R110W needs:
- Working factory cooler (verify it's not restricted)
- Large external cooler (40K+ GVW rated for any towed/tuned application)
- Verify no thermal bypass is stuck closed
- Consider remote-mount cooler with fan for slow-speed/idle cooling
Without proper cooling, even a quality rebuild won't last. Heat = death.
Performance brands for 5R110W
BD Diesel
Built 5R110Ws specifically for Powerstroke. High-output applications. Their built trans + Triple Loc converter is a popular combo.ATS Diesel
Similar focus. ATS Stage 3 build for tuned 6.4L. Often paired with Five Star converter.Goerend Transmission
Specialty Cummins/Powerstroke transmission shop. Highly regarded built 5R110W units.Suncoast Diesel
Another Cummins/Powerstroke specialty shop. Strong reputation.Mishimoto (cooling)
Best aftermarket cooler kits for 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstrokes. Combine with quality trans cooler for full cooling solution. What about the 6R140 TorqShift?
The 6R140 is the 6-speed that replaced the 5R110W starting 2011 (6.7L Powerstroke). Different transmission, different parts. NOT interchangeable. The 6R140 is stronger and adds a 6th gear for fuel economy.
When the 5R110W is dead
If yours is making metal in the pan, slipping in multiple gears, and codes are stacking up — pull it and either rebuild or replace.
Don't try to "just service it" — fluid changes won't fix mechanical wear.
