Confirm It Is Really Losing 4th Gear

What Actually Breaks: The Overdrive Servo Snap Ring

The number one cause on the 4R70W is a broken snap ring on the overdrive servo. It is a known weak point. Raybestos documents the teardown plainly: the small end pieces of the snap ring break off, but enough of the snap ring remains to hold the overdrive servo in place. So the servo can still be sitting where it belongs and you would never know from a quick look.

The part that turns a small failure into a no-overdrive condition is where the broken pieces go. Per the same Raybestos teardown, one of the broken end pieces of the snap ring passed through an opening below the servo piston and into the valve body, jamming the servo regulator valve. Cause Two: Overdrive Servo Regulator Valve Bore Wear

The diagnostic call is a vacuum test at the indicated ports: if the bore fails to hold the recommended minimum in-Hg, or wear is visible, the bore is done. Cause Three: Servo Pin Bore Wear in the Case

The third failure is the case itself. The overdrive servo pin wears its bore in the aluminum case, and once that bore is oval the servo cannot build enough pressure to clamp the band properly. The band then slips under load and burns. The fix is not a new band - it is sleeving the bore so the servo has a straight, sealed bore to work against, then replacing the band.

The Diagnosis, In Order

  1. Verify the neutral condition. Press the overdrive cancel button. If it drives normally in third, you have a 3-4 neutral, not a general slip.
  2. Drop the pan and pull the valve body. Per Raybestos, the first physical step is to see whether the snap ring has shattered and whether the overdrive servo has fallen out of position.
  3. Hunt the fragments. Look specifically at the servo regulator valve for a lodged piece of snap ring. Removing that fragment restores valve function, but understand the rest of the ring is now a time bomb.
  4. Vacuum test the servo regulator valve bore. If it will not hold the minimum, the bore is worn and needs an oversized valve or a drop-in kit.
  5. Inspect the servo pin bore in the case. Oval or scored means a sleeve, not just a new servo.
  6. Inspect the overdrive band. If it is glazed, cracked, or blued, it has already been slipping and it gets replaced regardless of what caused it.

The Fix: What to Actually Buy

How deep you go depends on what you find, but there is a sane order.

If the snap ring broke, replace the whole servo piston assembly rather than just chasing the ring.
