4L80E solenoid count

  • 2 shift solenoids (1-2 and 2-3)
  • 1 TCC PWM solenoid
  • 1 EPC pressure control solenoid
  • 1 3-2 control solenoid
  • Total: 5 solenoids

Common failure symptoms

Shift solenoid 1-2 failure:

  • P0753 / P0751 codes
  • Stuck in 1st or harsh 1-2 shift
  • Shift solenoid 2-3 failure:

  • P0758 / P0756 codes
  • No 2-3 shift or harsh
  • TCC solenoid failure:

  • P0741 / P0742
  • No lockup or shudder
  • EPC failure:

  • P0747 / P0748
  • Pressure stuck high or low
  • All shifts affected
  • What you need

    Parts:

  • Individual solenoid: $30-$80 each
  • Full solenoid kit (5 solenoids): $150-$300
  • Pan gasket: $15-$30
  • Filter: $15-$30
  • Dexron VI (12 qts): $110-$170
  • Tools:

  • 13mm + 10mm sockets
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Drain pan (15+ qt)
  • Funnel + long-neck pour
  • Jack + jack stands
  • Step-by-step procedure

    Step 1: Warm trans

  • Drive 10 minutes
  • Operating temp 180F+
  • Step 2: Raise vehicle

  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan positioned
  • Step 3: Drain fluid

  • Drain plug if equipped
  • Or loosen pan bolts
  • Catch 7+ quarts
  • Step 4: Drop pan

  • 17 pan bolts (10mm)
  • Pan may stick - gently pry
  • Inspect magnet for debris
  • Step 5: Locate solenoids

  • Mounted on valve body
  • Each labeled by position
  • Note wire colors
  • Step 6: Disconnect electrical

  • Squeeze release tab
  • Pull connector straight
  • Label each one
  • Step 7: Remove solenoid bracket

  • 10mm bracket bolt
  • Pull solenoid straight out
  • Note O-ring orientation
  • Step 8: Install new solenoid

  • New O-rings (lube with fluid)
  • Same orientation as old
  • Push fully home
  • Reinstall bracket
  • Step 9: Reconnect electrical

  • Match label to position
  • Click connector home
  • Step 10: Reinstall pan

  • New gasket
  • Torque 89 in-lb cross pattern
  • NOT ft-lb (in-lb)
  • Step 11: Refill

  • Through dipstick tube
  • 7-8 quarts initial
  • Dexron VI ONLY
  • Step 12: Cycle and check level

  • Engine running, brake pressed
  • Cycle through all gears
  • Check dipstick warm
  • EPC solenoid critical orientation

    Direction matters:

  • EPC has specific install direction
  • Wrong direction = no line pressure
  • Truck wont move
  • Mark before removal
  • Verify before bolting:

  • Look for orientation mark
  • Or notch on body
  • Test fit before final tighten
  • Cost summary

    DIY single solenoid:

  • Solenoid: $30-$80
  • Pan gasket + filter: $30-$60
  • Fluid: $110-$170
  • Time: 3-4 hours
  • Total: $170-$310
  • DIY full kit:

  • 5-solenoid kit: $150-$300
  • Pan gasket + filter: $30-$60
  • Fluid: $110-$170
  • Time: 3-4 hours
  • Total: $290-$530
  • Shop installation:

  • Single: $250-$500
  • Full kit: $500-$900
  • Which solenoid to replace

    Single replacement makes sense if:

  • Truck under 80k miles
  • Only one code
  • Other solenoids tested in spec
  • Full kit replacement if:

  • Truck 100k+ miles
  • Multiple codes
  • One failure usually means others near
  • Same labor regardless
  • Solenoid testing

    Resistance check:

  • Disconnect harness
  • Ohm across solenoid pins
  • Spec: 18-30 ohms typical
  • Open or short = bad
  • Operational check:

  • Apply 12V to solenoid
  • Should click/move
  • No movement = stuck/bad
  • Common DIY mistakes

    Wrong orientation install:

  • EPC direction matters
  • Wrong = no pressure
  • Pinching O-rings:

  • Lube before insertion
  • Push straight
  • No twisting
  • Mixing up positions:

  • Label each connection
  • Each solenoid has specific job
  • Wrong wire = wrong code
  • Over-torquing pan bolts:

  • 89 in-lb (NOT ft-lb)
  • Cross pattern
  • Over-tight = warped pan
  • Wrong fluid:

  • Dexron VI only
  • NOT Dexron III, Mercon, ATF+4
  • After install

    Clear codes:

  • OBD2 scan tool
  • Or wait 10 drive cycles
  • Drive cycle:

  • 10-15 miles normal driving
  • TCM learns adapt values
  • Verify all shifts:

  • 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 each occur
  • TCC engages at cruise
  • No new codes
  • Bottom line

Most 4L80E shift issues are solenoid:

  • Cheaper than rebuild
  • DIY-able
  • Common at 100k-180k miles
  • Full kit vs single:

  • Single if under 80k
  • Full kit if 100k+
  • Same labor either way
