4L80E Output Shaft & Yoke: Replacement, Spline Counts

4L80E output shaft spec

  • 32-spline output
  • 1.71 inch diameter
  • Rated 800+ ft-lb stock
  • Bolt-pattern: 1410 series u-joint typical

Common output-related issues

Tail housing leak:

  • Tail seal failure
  • Output bushing wear
  • Driveshaft yoke wear

Yoke wear:

  • Grooves in yoke surface destroy new seals
  • Causes repeat leaks
  • Polish or replace

Output shaft spline wear:

  • Rare on stock applications
  • Common on high-HP / tow rigs

Tail housing bushing:

  • Wears with miles
  • Allows shaft wobble

Diagnosis

  • Park on cardboard overnight
  • Confirm leak is tail housing (not pan or front)
  • Inspect yoke for grooves
  • Wiggle driveshaft side-to-side (excessive movement = bushing)

Tail seal:

  • AC Delco 290-262
  • $15-$30 part
  • Easiest fix

Tail housing bushing:

  • $25-$50 part
  • Always replace with seal

Output shaft (full):

  • OEM 32-spline: $150-$350
  • HD billet: $400-$700
  • Only replace if splines pitted

Driveshaft yoke (1410 series 32-spline):

  • $80-$160 part
  • Replace if grooved

Tail housing:

  • $100-$250 used
  • $300-$500 new
  • Cast iron vs aluminum (HD trucks have cast iron)
  • Install: seal & bushing only

    • Disconnect driveshaft (mark for indexing)
    • Slide driveshaft yoke out of tail housing
    • Pry old seal out
    • Drive out tail housing bushing (driver tool)
    • Install new bushing
    • Install new seal (seal driver)
    • Lube yoke splines with Dexron VI
    • Reinstall driveshaft
    • Torque strap bolts to 22 ft-lb
    • Top off fluid

    Install: full output shaft

    • Trans must come out
    • Major teardown
    • Tail housing comes off
    • Output shaft slides out the back
    • Inspect speedometer drive gear
    • Reassemble with new bearings/seals
