GM produced three closely-related 4-speed automatics: 4L60E, 4L65E, and 4L70E. Here's how they differ, which is in your truck, and what parts interchange.
Quick overview
4L60E (1992-present):
- Original electronic 4-speed
- ~360 ft-lb stock capacity
- Found in: standard-duty trucks, SUVs, Camaro, Corvette
- 4-pinion planetary (early)
4L65E (2001-present):
- HD version of 4L60E
- 5-pinion planetary
- ~380 ft-lb stock capacity
- Found in: HD trucks, Suburban
4L70E (2006-present):
- Further updated version
- 5-pinion planetary
- Updated TCC system
- ~430 ft-lb stock capacity
- Found in: late-model HD applications

Key differences
Planetary gear set:
- 4L60E (early): 4-pinion
- 4L65E/4L70E: 5-pinion (stronger)
Sun shell:
- 4L60E (factory): undersized, fails
- 4L65E/4L70E: updated but still benefits from Sonnax billet
- Read our 4L60E no reverse / sun shell guide
TCC apply:
- 4L60E: standard TCC
- 4L65E: improved TCC apply
- 4L70E: updated TCC apply piston

Parts interchange
Mostly interchanges:
- Valve body
- Most solenoids
- Frictions and steels (verify count)
- Bands and servos
- Most seals
Sometimes different:
- Planetary (4-pinion vs 5-pinion)
- Sun shell
- TCC apply piston
- Internal harness
Don't interchange:
- Output shaft (may differ by application)
- Speed sensor types (year-specific)
- Specific year electronics
Identification
By year and application:
- 1992-2000: usually 4L60E
- 2001+: could be 4L60E or 4L65E
- 2006+: could be any of three
- HD applications: more likely 4L65E or 4L70E
By VIN/RPO code:
- M30: 4L60E
- M32: 4L65E (some applications)
- M70: 4L70E
By output shaft:
- Different shaft lengths between some applications
- Verify before swap
Common failures (all three):
Sun shell crack (famous):
- Most common on 4L60E
- Updated on 4L65E/4L70E but still prone
- Sonnax billet sun shell mandatory

3-4 clutch wear:
- All three transmissions
- Standard rebuild item
- Read our 4L60E 3-4 clutch pack guide
TCC apply piston wear:
- All three, more common in tow rigs
- Read our 4L60E TCC solenoid guide
Pump wear (high mileage):
- All three at 150K+ miles typical

Cost considerations
Rebuild costs (similar for all three):
- DIY: $700-1,200
- Shop: $1,800-3,500
- HD with billet sun shell + Sonnax: $2,000-3,800

When to use which for swap
Standard daily driver swap:
- 4L60E acceptable
- Cheapest core
- Most parts availability
HD/tow swap:
- 4L65E or 4L70E preferred
- 5-pinion planetary helpful
- Still upgrade to HD billet parts
Performance build:
- Any will work with full HD rebuild
- 4L70E starts strongest
- Sonnax billet parts for all
