4L60E and 4L65E look identical from the outside. Internals are different. Get the wrong rebuild kit and you waste a day. Here is how to ID and what parts swap.
External identification
4L60E (1992-2005, light-duty):
- 4-pinion planetary
- 27-spline input shaft
- 300M output shaft
- Stamped pan with side bolts
4L65E (2001-2014, HD light-duty):
- 5-pinion planetary (HD)
- 29-spline input shaft (early) / 30-spline (late)
- HD output shaft
- Same pan as 4L60E
VIN-based ID
- RPO code M30 = 4L60E
- RPO code M32 = 4L65E
- Check glove box sticker for build code
Capacity differences
4L60E:
- ~360 ft-lb input limit
- Designed for V6 / small V8
- Used in S10, Camaro, light trucks
4L65E:
- ~440 ft-lb input limit
- Designed for Vortec 5.3L / 6.0L
- Used in HD trucks, Avalanche, SS
What parts interchange
Same between both:
- Pan and gasket
- Filter
- Pump assembly (most years)
- Valve body (most years)
- Solenoids
- Most clutches and steels
- Rebuild kit overlap is 80%+
Different between them:
- Input shaft (27 vs 29/30 spline)
- Planetary set (4 vs 5 pinion)
- Output shaft (some years)
- Sun gear and reaction carrier (later 4L65E)
Buying a rebuild kit
If you only have the trans (no VIN):
- Count input spline (27 = 60E, 29+ = 65E)
- Count planet pinions (4 = 60E, 5 = 65E)
- Buy kit for what you actually have
Common mistakes:
- Buying 60E kit for 65E (wrong frictions on planetary)
- Buying 65E shaft for 60E case (wont fit drum)
Upgrading 4L60E with 4L65E parts
Worth doing during rebuild:
- 5-pinion planetary (HD)
- HD output shaft
- Adds ~80 ft-lb capacity
- $200-$400 extra over OEM
Not worth doing:
- Input shaft (requires drum swap)
- Reaction sun (requires more drum work)
Cost
4L60E rebuild kit:
- Basic: $80-$140
- HD with 5-pinion planet: $200-$400
4L65E rebuild kit:
- Basic: $120-$200
- HD: $250-$450
