4L60E P0758 - What It Means, Causes, and How to Fix It
P0758 on a GM 4L60E is "2-3 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical", also listed as Shift Solenoid B Electrical. The PCM sets it when the 2-3 shift solenoid circuit does not respond to the driver the way it should: the PCM grounds the circuit and the voltage does not fall, or it releases the circuit and the voltage does not rise. It is an electrical code for one specific circuit, which means the fault lives somewhere between the PCM driver, the external harness, the case pass-through connector, the internal harness, and the solenoid coil. It is not a clutch or hydraulic code.
Parts for your 4L60E
This applies to the 1993-2013 4L60E and the 4L65E and 4L70E, which use the same two on/off shift solenoids. The sister code for the 1-2 solenoid is P0753, covered in 4L60E P0753 - what it means, causes, and how to fix it. For the full list of codes this unit throws, see 4L60E check engine light: common trans codes decoded.
What the 2-3 shift solenoid does
Two on/off solenoids give the 4L60E four forward gears. Both solenoids get ignition voltage on one shared wire at case connector pin E. The PCM completes each circuit through a low-side driver: the 1-2 solenoid returns on pin A, the 2-3 solenoid on pin B. The solenoid states by gear are:
| Gear | 1-2 Solenoid (A) | 2-3 Solenoid (B) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | ON | ON |
| 2nd | OFF | ON |
| 3rd | OFF | OFF |
| 4th | ON | OFF |
The 2-3 solenoid is ON in 1st and 2nd and OFF in 3rd and 4th. When the PCM detects the P0758 circuit fault it stops commanding shifts and both solenoids sit de-energized, which is the 3rd-gear position. That is the 3rd-gear "limp mode" that comes with this code. If instead the solenoid is stuck ON mechanically or held ON by a shorted-to-ground circuit, you get the other classic symptom: the truck shifts 1-2 fine, then never makes the 2-3 shift and the engine keeps climbing at the 2nd-gear ratio.
Symptoms of P0758 on a 4L60E
- Check engine light with P0758 stored, sometimes with P0753 if the shared pin E feed is the problem.
- Starts in 3rd gear from a stop; feels sluggish and never shifts.
- Or: 1-2 shift is normal, engine revs high, no 3rd, no 4th, scan tool shows 2nd-gear ratio (about 1.6:1) while 3rd is commanded.
- Delayed 2-3 shift that eventually happens after a long pause, which points at a slow driver or a sticking solenoid rather than an open circuit.
Transmission Digest documented a 2001 S-10 with exactly that last symptom: P0758 stored, 2-3 shift delayed 20-25 seconds after the command, with both solenoids reading 26-27 ohms and clicking correctly when powered directly. The PCM's 2-3 driver was slow to release, and a PCM fixed it. It is the exception, but it is worth knowing before you condemn a good solenoid.
Common causes
- Failed 2-3 shift solenoid coil - open (no continuity) or shorted (resistance well below spec) after years in hot fluid.
- Internal harness - the molded harness inside the pan chafes against the valve body or loses clip tension at the solenoid.
- Case pass-through connector - bent or spread pins, corrosion, or a leaking O-ring that lets fluid wick into the external harness. ATRA's bulletin specifically warns against prying or twisting this connector because it bends pins.
- Shared ignition feed on pin E - a weak feed, blown fuse, or worn ignition switch (a known issue on 1997-2002 trucks) sets P0753 and P0758 together.
- External harness - rub-through on the frame rail or a chafed section near the bellhousing on the pin B wire.
- PCM low-side driver - stuck on, stuck off, or slow to release as in the case above.
Step-by-step diagnosis
- Fluid level and condition. Burnt fluid does not set a circuit code by itself but tells you how hard the solenoids have been cooked.
- Road test with live data. Watch commanded gear, SSA/SSB state, and gear ratio. If 3rd is commanded and the ratio stays at 1.6:1, the 2-3 solenoid is not doing what the PCM asks.
- Command the solenoid with the scan tool. Cycle the 2-3 solenoid on and off and listen at the pan. A good solenoid gives a distinct click on and a second click off. Click on with no click off means it is being held on or is sticking.
- Resistance at the case connector. Unplug the transmission connector and read pin E to pin B on the transmission side. GM's diagnostic charts specify 19-31 ohms; ATRA's 4L60E resistance bulletin lists 20-40 ohms for each shift solenoid. Read pin E to pin A for comparison; the two should be close. Zero or infinite means solenoid or internal harness.
- Check the feed. Key on, engine off, harness side, pin E should show battery voltage. If not, the problem is upstream: fuse, ignition switch, or harness.
- Check the control side. Back-probe the pin B wire with the harness connected. Commanded off, it should sit at battery voltage; commanded on, it should pull to about 0 V. Never pulls low means an open control wire or dead driver. Pulls low but takes seconds to release is the slow-driver case.
- Drop the pan. If the case-connector reading is out of spec, measure directly at the 2-3 solenoid. In spec at the solenoid but out of spec at the connector means the internal harness is the fault, not the solenoid.
The fix
Most P0758 repairs come down to the 2-3 shift solenoid, the internal harness, or both. The 1-2 and 2-3 shift solenoids are the same part, the same age, and sit in the same fluid, so replace them as a pair. Doing one now and the other in six months means dropping the pan twice for the same job.
The 4L60E Shift Solenoid Kit with Filter includes both shift solenoids and a new filter so the service and the repair happen in one pan drop. If you only need the solenoid pair, the 4L60E Shift Solenoid Kit 1998-2009 covers the common truck and SUV years. EPC, TCC, 3-2, and master solenoid kits for this unit are in the solenoids collection.
Replacement: drain, drop the pan and filter, unclip the retainer and connector on the 2-3 solenoid, pull it straight out, lube the new O-rings with clean fluid, seat the new one, and reinstall. Reconnect the case connector straight, arrows aligned, until it clicks. Refill, clear codes, and road test while watching SSB and gear ratio on the scan tool.
Replace while you are in there
- 1-2 shift solenoid - identical part, identical age.
- Filter and pan gasket - already out.
- Internal wiring harness - replace if any clip is loose or the insulation is stiff and cracked.
- Case connector O-ring - stops fluid wicking into the external harness.
- Fluid - fresh Dexron VI. Old fluid is what killed the solenoid.
Cost and effort
This is a driveway job on stands: about an hour to drain and drop the pan, minutes per solenoid, and the rest for cleanup, refill, and the road test. The parts cost a small fraction of a shop diagnosis and pan-off service, and nothing like a rebuild, which this code does not call for. The one expensive outcome is a bad PCM driver, and the control-side voltage test above will tell you that before you spend anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my 4L60E shift 1-2 but not 2-3 with P0758?
The 2-3 shift solenoid is ON in 1st and 2nd and must turn OFF for 3rd. If it is stuck on, held on by a short to ground, or the PCM driver will not release it, the transmission stays at the 2nd-gear ratio no matter what is commanded. Test the solenoid resistance at pins E and B, then check whether the pin B control wire actually returns to battery voltage when 3rd is commanded.
Is P0758 the same as P0753?
No. P0753 is the 1-2 shift solenoid (A) circuit and P0758 is the 2-3 shift solenoid (B) circuit. They share the pin E ignition feed, so a feed problem sets both at once. A single code points at that one solenoid's circuit.
Does P0758 mean the transmission is slipping or needs a rebuild?
No. It is an electrical circuit code. A solenoid, harness, connector, feed, or driver fault sets it, and none of those cause slipping. If you also have slipping, that is a separate mechanical problem to diagnose on its own.
