If you are shopping for ring and pinion gears, the choice almost always comes down to 3.73 or 4.10. They are the two most common axle ratios on American trucks, Jeeps and muscle cars, and picking the wrong one costs you either towing power or highway fuel economy for as long as you own the vehicle. This guide explains what the numbers actually mean, how tire size changes the answer, and how to pick the right ratio the first time.

What the Numbers Mean

An axle ratio tells you how many times the driveshaft turns for every single turn of the tires. A 3.73 ratio means the driveshaft spins 3.73 times to rotate the wheels once. A 4.10 means it spins 4.10 times.

That makes 4.10 the numerically higher ratio, which is where people get confused. In gearing talk, a numerically higher number is called a "lower" gear, and it behaves like a lower gear: more turning force at the wheels, more engine RPM at any given speed. A 3.73 is the "taller" gear: less multiplication, lower RPM, easier on fuel.

The gap between the two is about 10 percent. That sounds small, but it is felt every time you pull away from a light, merge onto a highway with a trailer, or climb a grade.

What It Does to Engine RPM

You can estimate cruising RPM with a simple formula:

Engine RPM = (Speed in mph × Axle ratio × Top gear ratio × 336) ÷ Tire diameter in inches

Here is what that works out to at 65 mph, assuming a 1:1 top gear so the axle ratio is doing all the work. Most modern trucks have an overdrive top gear, which lowers every number below by the same proportion, but the difference between the two ratios holds.

Notice the diagonal. A 4.10 on 35-inch tires (2,558 RPM) lands almost exactly where a 3.73 sat on 31s. That is the whole reason people regear.

Why Bigger Tires Change Everything

A taller tire covers more ground with every revolution, which makes your gearing effectively "taller" without you touching the axle. A truck that came from the factory with 3.73 gears on 31-inch tires, now running 35s, behaves like it has roughly a 3.30. The engine drops out of its power band, the transmission hunts between gears, and towing turns into a struggle on every hill.

To find the ratio that restores factory performance, use this:

New ratio = Current ratio × (New tire diameter ÷ Old tire diameter)

For that same truck: 3.73 × (35 ÷ 31) = 4.21. Nobody makes a 4.21, so you round to the nearest real ratio. Most drivers pick 4.10 if the truck spends its life on the highway, or step up to 4.30 or 4.56 if it tows heavy or goes off-road.

Choose 3.73 If

  • You run stock or close-to-stock tire sizes.
  • Most of your miles are unloaded highway driving and fuel economy matters.
  • You tow occasionally, and the trailer is well within your truck's rating.
  • You want a quieter, lower-RPM cruise.

Choose 4.10 If

  • You have gone up in tire size, especially to 33s or 35s.
  • You tow regularly or haul heavy loads.
  • You want sharper acceleration and less transmission hunting on grades.
  • The vehicle sees off-road use where low-speed control matters.

Things to Check Before You Buy

Match both axles on a 4x4. The front and rear ratios must be identical. Mismatched gears will bind the drivetrain in four-wheel drive and can destroy a transfer case.

Know your axle. Gear sets are specific to the differential, not just the ratio. A Dana 44, Ford 8.8, GM 8.6 and Dana 60 each take their own ring and pinion. Confirm your axle model before ordering.

Watch for the carrier break. As ratios climb numerically, the pinion gear gets smaller and the ring gear has to get thicker to keep proper contact. At some point the gear cannot get any thicker and you need a different carrier. This is called the carrier break. Moving from 3.73 to 4.10 on some axles crosses it, which means the regear also needs a new carrier. Check before you assume it is a bolt-in.

Buy an install kit. A regear should always be done with new bearings, seals, crush sleeve or shims and a pinion nut. Reusing old bearings on a new gear set is the most common cause of gear whine and early failure.

Recalibrate the speedometer. Any ratio or tire change throws off the speedometer, and on many modern vehicles it also affects shift points. Plan on reprogramming after the install.

Yes. A 4.10 gives about 10 percent more torque multiplication at the wheels, which makes it easier to get a heavy trailer moving and to hold speed on grades. The trade-off is higher engine RPM and slightly worse fuel economy when you are not towing.

Will 4.10 gears hurt my gas mileage?

On stock-size tires, usually a little, because the engine turns faster at the same highway speed.
