These two automatics get cross-shopped for one reason: both are the "heavy" version of their family, both live behind big-torque engines, and both end up on the bench for reasons that have almost nothing to do with the gearsets. The GM 10L90 is a ten-speed rear-drive unit built alongside Ford's 10R series. The Mercedes 722.6 is a five-speed that ran for roughly two decades and shows up badged as NAG1 under Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Porsche and Jaguar. If you are deciding which one to keep, which one to rebuild, or which one belongs behind your engine, the differences that matter are gear count, torque rating, and how each one fails.

Quick spec comparison

Per the published Ford-GM 10-speed reference data, the 10L90 (MX0) runs forward ratios of 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689 and 0.636, with a reverse ratio of -4.866. That works out to an overall ratio spread of 7.386. Maximum input torque is listed at 900 N·m (664 lb-ft). Architecture is four gearsets, two brakes and three clutches.

The 722.6 is a different animal. Sonnax notes it went into production for the 1996 model year and was still being offered in 2009, and that in the US the NAG1 versions include the W5A580, W5A380, W5A330 and W5J400 — where the last three digits state maximum input torque in Newton-meters (Sonnax, "Mercedes 722.6, Daimler W5, Porsche W5, Jaguar 722.6"). So a W5A580 is rated to 580 N·m, roughly 428 lb-ft. Sonnax adds that the W5A330 has the widest gear ratio and the others share the same ratio, and that "J400" identifies a Jeep application.

Gear ratios on a typical W5A580-family car are listed as 3.595 first, 2.186 second, 1.405 third, 1.000 fourth, 0.831 fifth, with 3.167 reverse, alongside a production run of 1995 to 2014 across six versions — W5A280, W5A300, W5A330, W5A400, W5A580 and W5A900 (gearboxlist 722.6 data sheet). Run the math on those and you get a spread of about 4.3:1, versus 7.386:1 for the 10L90.

What that actually means to drive

The 10L90's 4.696 first gear gets a heavy vehicle moving hard, and the 0.636 tenth drops highway RPM well below what a five-speed can. The five extra ratios in between are what let it keep an engine inside a narrow torque band. The 722.6, with a 3.595 first and a 0.831 top, has to cover the same road speed range with half as many steps — so it leans much harder on the converter and on its overlap clutch control to smooth the gaps.

On raw input torque, the 10L90's 900 N·m rating is well above a W5A580's 580 N·m. Only the top 722.6 variant (W5A900) reaches into the same neighborhood, and that one is not what is under most vehicles on the road.

How the 10L90 fails

The 10L90's headline issue is documented in a GM safety recall. In March 2025 GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 transmissions, for a "momentary wheel lock-up" condition at higher speeds that can also include a downshift back to 2nd gear. Sonnax traces the cause to the feed limit low valve, which wears and gradually loses control pressure to the default disable (DD) solenoid; that solenoid positions the default enable and default select valves, and when its feed pressure drops the unit can fall into lower gears or bind up. The giveaway trouble code is P0747 — essentially the "E" clutch on when it should be off (Sonnax, "Understanding the '19-Later GM 10-Speed Safety Recall").

Two details from that same Sonnax article are worth writing down. First, the wear can show up early: 10L1000 units have been seen with the low limit valve worn out in as few as 35,000 miles, especially tow trucks and vehicles hauling large trailers. Second, it is a heat-dependent complaint — the transmission usually behaves normally until hot, so let the vehicle cool and re-drive it as a quick check. Sonnax also cautions that extended driving in that condition will destroy clutch packs, because the wear causes intermittent bindup.

Beyond the recall valve, Sonnax lists the recurring 10-speed problems as CDF drum sleeve movement, cylinder clutch container failure (the "stove pipe failure"), main shaft plugs loosening, overheating from incorrect ATF level, speed sensor issues, and incorrect assembly (Sonnax, "Tackling Ford & GM 10-Speed Valve Body Problems"). That article also flags something that changes how you diagnose these: ten-speed valve bodies use casting-integrated, direct-acting solenoids (CIDAS) that act directly on the clutch control valve and only produce clutch pressure with current — which is why a 10-speed has no movement at all when unplugged from the electrical source. Sonnax says these solenoids rarely fail, and points inspection instead at the main pressure regulator valve, TCC priority valve, TCC regulator valve, boost valve and the latch valves, plus impregnated separator plate filters that come loose and stick valves.

The Sonnax parts catalog for the 10L90 (Gen. 1) lists the symptom set that follows from all of this: burnt clutches, converter shudder and TCC slip, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, high line pressure, loss of shift solenoid control pressure, low TCC apply pressure in full lockup and low cooler flow.

How the 722.6 fails

The 722.6's signature complaint is hydraulic, not mechanical. Sonnax describes engine RPM flare on the 2-3 and 4-5 upshift, or a neutral flare on the 5-4 and 3-2 downshift, caused by the outer bore of the working pressure regulator valve wearing and letting pMod solenoid signal oil leak past the boost end of the valve. As the casting wears, working pressure stops rising with engine load and you get the flare or an outright loss of gear. Sonnax reports that in 1998 many high-mileage cars repaired under Mercedes warranty had the same 2-3 flare pushing the vehicle into limp mode, and attributes it to the hardness of the valve body casting material. The 1-2/4-5, 2-3 and 3-4 overlap sleeves sit in the same pMod signal circuit and commonly wear on the I.D. while leaking at the O.D., which drops pressure at the working pressure valve.

Two practical notes from that source: the unit uses a multi-disc torque converter clutch, and you can tell where a case came from — a driver's side pin stamp (or pin stamp plus barcode tag) means German manufacture, a barcode tag alone means Chrysler built it. Fluid is not interchangeable either. Sonnax notes Sprinter, Crossfire and Mercedes units require specific fluid due to calibration issues, while other Chrysler applications use ATF+4; the Mercedes-side spec is listed as ATF MB 236.14 with a 7.0 to 9.5 liter fill depending on variant, and a partial change of 5.0 to 7.5 liters (gearboxlist).

Which one to choose

If the vehicle already has one, keep it — neither swaps into the other's platform without fabricating a case adapter, driveshaft, crossmember, cooler lines and controller. The comparison matters when you are deciding whether a unit is worth rebuilding.

Choose the 10L90 if you need torque capacity and highway efficiency. 900 N·m of rated input and a 7.386 spread are simply a different class than a 580 N·m five-speed. The tradeoff is complexity: ten forward ratios, four gearsets, CIDAS solenoids, and a known control-valve wear item that GM recalled. Check the recall status by VIN before spending a dollar on parts.

Choose the 722.6 if you want a simpler, well-documented unit with two decades of parts support and a straightforward failure mode. A worn working pressure regulator bore and worn overlap sleeves are repairable in the valve body. It will never match the ten-speed's ratio spread, and the base variants are torque-limited by comparison.

The fix, and what to replace while you are in there

On a 10L90 with the P0747 pattern, the control-valve work is the job. While the valve body is off, the drivetrain-side wear items are worth doing at the same time, because the labor is already spent. A GM 10-speed valve body R&R is generally a several-hour job for an experienced tech; a full teardown with clutch packs runs into a multi-day bench job.

Is the 10L90 stronger than the 722.6? On published input torque ratings, yes. The 10L90 is listed at 900 N·m (664 lb-ft), while the most common 722.6 variant, the W5A580, is rated at 580 N·m by its own naming convention. Only the W5A900 variant approaches the ten-speed's rating.

Does the GM recall apply to every 10L90? No. Sonnax states Safety Recall N242480630, issued in March 2025, covers the 10L1000 and the Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90. Gen. 1 units are outside that recall, though they have their own valve wear list. Verify by VIN.

My 722.6 flares on the 2-3 shift. Is the transmission finished? Not necessarily. Sonnax attributes that exact complaint to outer bore wear at the working pressure regulator valve leaking pMod signal oil, and to worn 1-2/4-5, 2-3 and 3-4 overlap sleeves — all of which are valve body repairs, findable with a vacuum test or visual inspection before you condemn the unit.
