The 48RE lived behind the Cummins in 2003–2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. It is the direct successor to the 47RE and shares identical gear ratios with it, but is both heavier and stronger.

The 10L90 carries GM RPO code MX0 and appears in the 2017–2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the 2019–2020 Cadillac CT6, and the 2020-and-later Cadillac CT5 and CT4. Sonnax also documents Gen. 2 and Gen. 3 10L90 units in GM truck service work, so the family reaches beyond the performance cars.

That distinction matters more than raw numbers: the 48RE is a diesel truck transmission designed around low-rpm torque and heavy loads, while the 10L90 is a high-rpm, high-horsepower gas transmission designed for efficiency and shift speed.

Strength: the numbers versus the reality

On paper the 10L90 wins by roughly 100 lb-ft. In practice both units get pushed past their design limits by the engines in front of them.

The 48RE case is the well-known one. DieselHub notes that while the transmission is rated at 560–570 lb-ft, the standard 5.9L Cummins peaked at 610 lb-ft by the 2005 model year, and the engine calibration was written to detune itself when necessary to promote transmission longevity. In other words, a completely stock truck already asks the 48RE for more than it is rated to take. Add a tuner and the margin disappears entirely.

The upgrade path for the 48RE is deep, which is its real advantage. Sonnax builds a 35-spline Smart-Tech big input shaft kit (part 22121B-08K) for 47RH, 47RE and 48RE units, machined from one-piece 300M billet steel and rated 35 percent stronger than the best heavy-duty 23- or 29-spline shafts, aimed at builds pushing beyond 1,000 horsepower. The matching billet piston uses a taller direct clutch hub with a shorter piston to add roughly 20 percent more built-in clutch capacity and allow a six-friction direct pack with no modifications. Nothing comparable exists off the shelf for the 10L90.

The 10L90 weak point: the feed limit low valve

If you are considering a 10L90, this is the single most important thing to know. In March 2025 GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 transmissions. Per Sonnax's teardown of the recall, affected vehicles can experience a momentary wheel lock-up condition at higher speeds, sometimes including a downshift back into 2nd gear.

The root cause is wear in the feed limit low valve. That valve acts as a limit valve for solenoid feed to the default disable (DD) solenoid. The DD solenoid controls the default enable and default select valves in the upper valve body, which govern the power-down default drive mode. As the feed limit low valve wears, solenoid feed pressure to the DD solenoid drops. When that happens, the default valves can drop the transmission into lower gears or create a bind-up condition depending on the commanded gear. With the DD solenoid off, line pressure is routed to the exhaust backfill circuit and the ABCD clutches apply through the exhaust ports, which is 2nd gear.

Sonnax reports the OE valve can wear out in as little as 30,000 miles. Symptoms tied to this failure include momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, a downshift to 2nd from high gear, harsh shifts, 5th gear only, a reduced propulsion message, and burnt clutches. Sonnax offers a drop-in feed limit low valve kit (105740-54K) for units with minimal bore wear and an oversized kit (105740-59K) that requires reaming for severe wear, repairing the bore instead of replacing the entire valve body. The 48RE weak points

The 48RE fails in older, more mechanical ways. Sonnax's 48RE unit symptom index lists the recurring ones: direct clutch failure, burnt forward clutch, burnt bands, lockup shudder, no lockup, low line pressure and low line rise, leakage of 4th and TCC oil pressure, no line rise during TCC apply in 4th, rear servo piston sticking or breakage, and reverse servo piston plug wear and breakage.

The electronic side is short but critical. The 48RE uses electronically controlled governor pressure rather than a mechanical governor. The governor pressure solenoid and the governor pressure sensor both mount on the valve body. When either fails, the truck loses proper upshift scheduling and typically ends up stuck in third gear or making second-gear starts.

Torque converter lockup on the 48RE engages when Tow/Haul is activated, and the PCM prevents lockup when transmission fluid temperature is below 50°F. A truck that will not lock up on a cold morning is behaving normally.

Diagnosis order before you commit to either unit

  1. Pull codes first. On a 10L90, P0747 points straight at the feed limit circuit described above, which is a valve body repair rather than a teardown. On a 48RE, pressure-related codes point at the governor circuit.
  2. Drop the pan and read the debris. Fine gray paste is normal wear. Fiber material means friction failure. Bronze means bushing failure. This one step separates a valve body job from a full rebuild.
  3. Check fluid level and condition at operating temperature. Burnt, dark fluid on a 48RE with slipping overdrive is a rebuild, not a solenoid.
  4. Verify whether the complaint is gear-specific. Loss of a single gear points to one clutch or band. Loss of everything above 2nd on a Gen. 2 10L90 points at the default disable circuit.
  5. Test the governor pressure solenoid and sensor on a 48RE before condemning the valve body. These are inexpensive parts that mimic serious failures.

The fix: which parts actually solve it

For a worn 10L90 with high mileage, contaminated fluid, or a failed clutch pack, a full overhaul kit is the honest answer. Frictions, steels, gaskets and seals all get replaced together because debris from one failure circulates through everything else.

Replace while you are in there

  • Both units: filter, pan gasket, complete seal set, and a fresh torque converter if there was any clutch material in the pan.
  • 10L90: the feed limit low valve repair, even if the vehicle has not thrown P0747 yet. You will not want to pull the valve body twice.
  • 48RE: governor pressure solenoid and sensor, front and rear servo components, and a band adjustment. If the build will see a tuner, the input shaft and direct clutch pack are the next limits.

Cost and effort

The 48RE is the friendlier unit for a home build. It is a four-speed with a conventional valve body, no adaptive relearn requirement, and a huge aftermarket. The 10L90 is a different job. It is a 10-speed with four planetary gearsets, tight assembly clearances, and control strategy that expects the correct fluid and correct clutch clearances. Most shops treat it as a specialist unit. The one genuinely accessible repair is the feed limit low valve, which is a valve body service rather than a full teardown, and that is exactly why Sonnax markets it as a way to avoid replacing the whole valve body.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the 48RE if you are working on a 2003–2007 Cummins truck, want a transmission you can build yourself, plan to tow, or intend to make serious power. The upgrade path runs all the way to 1,000-plus horsepower with off-the-shelf parts, and the unit is simple enough to diagnose with a pressure gauge and a pan drop.

Choose the 10L90 if you want factory drivability, a 7.386 ratio spread, quick shifts and better highway efficiency in a modern GM vehicle, and you accept that repairs go through a specialist. Verify the recall status of any used unit or vehicle before you buy.

There is no practical swap between the two. Different bellhousing patterns, different control systems, different vehicle families.
