These two transmissions almost never end up on the same shopping list by accident. The GM 10L80 is a 2017-and-later ten-speed sitting behind gas V8s and Duramax diesels. The Chrysler 47RE is a four-speed that lived from 1994 to 2003 behind the 5.9L Cummins. If you are comparing them, you are usually doing one of three things: cross-shopping a modern half-ton against an older Ram, deciding whether to keep repairing an old 47RE truck, or trying to understand why your 10-speed truck just got a recall letter.

This is the honest comparison. Neither one swaps into the other's truck without a full driveline and controls rebuild, so the real question is which platform you want to own and what each one will cost you when it breaks.

Two things jump out. First, the 10L80's 4.70 first gear multiplies torque nearly twice as hard as the 47RE's 2.45, which is why a modern half-ton launches a trailer so much more easily than the raw engine numbers suggest. Second, the 10L80 is rated for roughly 590 lb-ft against the 47RE's 450 lb-ft, and DieselHub flags that 450 lb-ft figure directly, noting the transmission's reliability "is questionable considering the Cummins' relatively high torque output and transmission's relatively low max input torque rating." That mismatch is the entire story of the 47RE aftermarket.

How each one actually fails

10L80: the feed limit low valve and the wheel-lockup recall

The defining 10L80 problem is a valve body wear issue serious enough to become a federal safety recall. Per Sonnax technical bulletin author Jim Dial, GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 in March 2025 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90. The complaint is a momentary wheel lock-up at higher speeds, sometimes with a downshift back into 2nd gear.

The root cause is the feed limit low valve. Sonnax explains that this valve sits in the boost ball circuitry and also acts as the solenoid regulator limiting feed to the default disable (DD) solenoid. The DD solenoid controls the default enable and default select valves in the upper valve body, and it is powered on at all times until a default event occurs. These 10-speeds have an unusual design feature: pump output pressure can be routed through the two default valves into the exhaust passages, which applies clutches when the DD solenoid is off. When the feed limit low valve wears its bore and loses control pressure, the transmission can drop into that default mode at speed. That is the wheel lockup.

Sonnax states the OE valve can wear out in as little as 30,000 miles. Symptoms to watch for include momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, a downshift to 2nd from a high gear, harsh shifts, 5th-gear-only limp mode, a reduced propulsion message, and burnt clutches.

The federal record backs this up. NHTSA campaign 24V797000 covers certain 2020-2022 Silverado and Sierra 1500/2500/3500, plus 2021 Escalade, Escalade ESV, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL diesel models: "The transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock-up." The remedy was new transmission control module software plus a special coverage program for transmissions the software flags as containing a defective control valve, with owner letters mailed December 12, 2024. A follow-up campaign, 26V083000 (GM number N252516560), covers vehicles that were repaired incorrectly under 24V797, with letters mailed March 6, 2026.

Read that carefully: the recall remedy is software that detects the wear, not a valve that stops wearing. Sonnax's fix is a feed limit low valve kit (drop-in 105740-54K, or oversized 105740-59K where the bore needs reaming) that repairs the bore instead of replacing the whole valve body.

47RE: torque capacity, bands, and electronic governor pressure

The 47RE's problems are mechanical and they are old news to anyone who has owned one. It is a 450 lb-ft transmission behind an engine that makes more than that once anyone touches the fuel system. Sonnax's 47RE unit listing catalogs the resulting failure symptoms directly: direct clutch failure, overdrive roller clutch failure, burnt Reverse band, burnt Forward clutch, TCC slip under load, lockup shudder, no lockup, poor line pressure control, reverse servo piston plug breakage and wear, and reverse drum/retainer/planet failure.

Two 47RE-specific items are worth understanding before you buy one:

  • Electronic governor pressure. The 47RE differs from the earlier 47RH in that governor pressure is electronically controlled rather than hydraulic and mechanical, per DieselHub. Both keep a hydraulic valve body. That governor pressure solenoid and transducer are wear items and they drive shift timing directly.
  • Band adjustment is real maintenance. DieselHub notes that out-of-spec band adjustment produces harsh engagements, slipping, delayed shifts and poor shift quality, and that bands stretch and loosen over time. This is a scheduled adjustment, not a repair, and skipping it accelerates wear.

Diagnosis order for each

10L80, harsh shift or momentary lockup:

  1. Scan for stored codes. P0747 points straight at the pressure control circuit tied to the feed limit low valve.
  2. Check whether the vehicle has had the recall software applied. If it is in 5th-gear-only limp with a reduced propulsion message, the software has already flagged the valve.
  3. Verify fluid level and condition with the correct ULV spec fluid. DieselHub gives an operating temperature range of 206-215 F (96-101 C), which matters because these are level-checked hot.
  4. If the complaint is a sudden downshift to 2nd or wheel lockup at speed, the valve body comes off. Bore wear is the target, not the solenoids.

47RE, slipping or harsh shift:

  1. Check fluid level and condition. Burnt ATF+4 with clutch material means the pan is coming off regardless.
  2. Adjust the bands before condemning anything internal. Front band: torque the adjuster to 72 in-lb with a 5/16" square drive, then back it off 1-7/8 turns on 1997-2002 units, and hold the screw while torquing the locknut to 25 ft-lb with a 3/4" socket. Rear band: 72 in-lb, back off 3 turns, locknut to 25 ft-lb (1/4" and 9/16" sockets). Specs vary by year, so confirm against your model year.
  3. Test governor pressure behavior. Erratic shift points and no lockup frequently trace to the governor pressure solenoid and transducer rather than to clutches.
  4. If it slips in a specific gear under load, you are into the direct clutch or overdrive roller clutch, and that is a rebuild.

Replace while you are in there

47RE: front and rear bands, filter and pan gasket, both servo assemblies (the reverse servo piston plug is a documented failure point), torque converter if the old one has been slipping or the fluid was burnt, output shaft seal, and the governor pressure solenoid and transducer while the valve body is out and accessible.

10L80: pan filter, pan gasket, all bonded pistons, and a full ULV fluid fill. If the valve body is off for feed limit low valve wear, inspect the other feed limit valve and the default enable and default select valve bores while you are in the casting, because the same side-load wear pattern lives in that area.

Cost and effort framing

A 47RE band adjustment is a driveway job: roughly one hour, jack stands, a torque wrench that reads inch-pounds, and the sockets listed above. A 47RE full rebuild is typically 8-12 hours of shop labor plus parts, and the transmission is old enough that many trucks get a rebuild with heavy-duty internals rather than a stock-spec restore. Because the 47RE is only rated for 450 lb-ft, a rebuild on a tuned Cummins that skips upgraded clutches and shafts tends to come back.

A 10L80 valve body repair is a different animal. Dropping the pan and valve body on a modern GM truck is generally 4-6 hours, but the diagnosis requires a scan tool that can read the recall software's wear flag, and the correct ULV fluid is not interchangeable with older DEXRON. On the other hand, if your VIN falls under 24V797000 or 26V083000, the dealer remedy is free, so check the recall status before you pay anyone. A 10L80 full rebuild runs longer than a 47RE rebuild simply because there are ten speeds worth of clutch packs and a far more complex valve body.

Which one to choose

Choose the 10L80 platform if you want a modern truck that tows well, gets real highway fuel economy from three overdrive ratios, and you are willing to deal with a valve body that may need attention and a scan tool that can talk to it. The higher 590 lb-ft rating and the 4.70 first gear are genuine advantages. Verify the recall work is done before you buy a used one.

Choose the 47RE platform if you want a simple, mechanically serviceable truck you can fix in your own driveway, and you accept that the transmission is the weak link behind a Cummins. It is a 450 lb-ft four-speed with a hydraulic valve body, adjustable bands, and a huge parts supply. Do not buy one that has been tuned hard on a stock transmission.

FAQ

Can a 10L80 be swapped into a 47RE truck?
Not practically. The 47RE is a 1994-2003 Cummins-bellhousing unit with a hydraulic valve body and a mechanical throttle input; the 10L80 has an integrated bellhousing cast into a one-piece case and requires modern GM electronic controls. You would be building the entire control system from scratch, and the bellhousing pattern alone rules out a bolt-in.

Is the 10L80 wheel-lockup recall actually fixed by the software?
The recall remedy is control module software plus special coverage for transmissions the software identifies as having a defective control valve. Sonnax's position is that the software monitors and warns about wear rather than preventing it, which is why they sell a valve kit that repairs the worn bore. If your truck is in limp mode with a reduced propulsion message, the software has already done its job of flagging the valve.

Do I really need to adjust 47RE bands, or is that optional?

Can I run regular DEXRON in a 10L80?
No. GM 10L80 applications call for DEXRON ULV, and Ford 10R80 applications call for Motorcraft ULV. ULV is an ultra-low-viscosity fluid; substituting a conventional ATF changes the hydraulic behavior the valve body was designed around.
