TH400 to TH350 Swap: When It Makes Sense

Most TH400-to-X swaps go to overdrive trans. But sometimes TH400 to TH350 makes sense — lighter weight, less drag, simpler. Here's when.

Why downsize from TH400

Weight savings:

  • TH400: ~135 lbs
  • TH350: ~120 lbs
  • 15 lb saving

Less internal drag:

  • Fewer clutches to spin
  • Slightly better MPG (3-5%)
  • More HP to wheels (small but real)

Simpler:

When this swap makes sense

Worth doing:

  • Stock-to-mild V8 (under 400 ft-lb)
  • Weight-sensitive drag car
  • TH350 already in your parts bin
  • Cost-conscious rebuild

NOT worth doing:

  • HP over 400 ft-lb sustained
  • HD tow application
  • Race trans needed

Better alternative:

Strength comparison

TH350 stock:

  • ~350-400 ft-lb capacity
  • Adequate for stock SBC
  • HD parts available

TH400 stock:

  • ~600 ft-lb capacity
  • Bulletproof

Going to TH350 = giving up HP capacity

Parts needed

Used TH350:

  • $200-$500 core
  • $1,000-$1,800 reman

Conversion:

  • New driveshaft (different length)
  • Trans mount (may interchange)
  • Cooler line adapters
  • Vacuum modulator hookup
  • Read our TH350 vacuum modulator

Approximate cost:

  • $1,500-$2,500 total

Mechanical considerations

Bellhousing:

  • Same Chevy small block pattern (most apps)
  • Some BBC apps need verification

Driveshaft:

  • TH350 shorter than TH400
  • Custom length needed

Crossmember:

  • Different mount location usually
  • Modify or adapter

Cooler lines:

  • Different routing
  • Different fittings

Vacuum modulator (TH350):

Common mistakes

Wrong driveshaft length:

  • Causes vibration or failure
  • Custom-measure or order to spec

Wrong vacuum source:

  • Use ported, not manifold
  • See modulator article

When to do TH400 to 700R4 instead

Add overdrive:

Trade-off:

  • 700R4 weaker than TH400
  • Needs HD parts for HP
  • More expensive than TH350

After install

Break-in:

Verify:

  • All shifts present
  • No leaks
  • Modulator adjusted

First service:

  • 1,500-2,000 miles
  • Pan drop + filter

Cost vs benefit summary

Net benefit:

  • $1,500-$2,500 swap cost
  • 15 lb weight saving
  • 3-5% MPG / HP improvement
  • Lower repair cost going forward

When NOT worth it:

  • Already running TH400 OK
  • HP applications
  • HD use
