Ford AX4N / AX4S Transmission Guide: FWD V6 Workhorse

The AX4N and AX4S were Ford's front-wheel-drive 4-speed automatics from the 1990s and early 2000s. Found in Taurus, Sable, Continental, Windstar, and several other FWD applications. Many are still on the road and still being rebuilt. Here's the guide.

AX4N basics

  • 4-speed automatic with overdrive
  • FWD (transverse mount)
  • Years: 1994-2007 production
  • Applications: Taurus, Sable, Continental, Windstar, Freestyle (some)
  • Torque capacity: ~250 ft-lb stock
  • Successor to: AXOD-E
  • Successor: AX4S, eventually 6F50

AX4S basics

  • 4-speed automatic with overdrive
  • FWD (transverse mount)
  • Years: Briefly produced as updated version of AX4N
  • Applications: Similar to AX4N
  • Spec: Slightly different valve body and TCM

Common failures

1. Forward clutch wear

The most common failure point. Forward clutch sees the highest stress.

Fix: Forward clutch replacement during rebuild.

2. Direct clutch wear

Second-most common.

Fix: Direct clutch replacement during rebuild.

3. Reverse band failure

Stock reverse band fails under HD use or high mileage.

Fix: HD reverse band during rebuild.

4. PR (pressure regulator) valve wear

Standard aluminum bore wear.

Fix: Sonnax PR valve kit.

5. Solenoid issues

At 100K+ miles, solenoid failures common.

Fix: Solenoid replacement.

6. Servo (band apply piston) issues

Servo bore wear causes shift quality issues.

Fix: Sonnax bore correction kit for servo.

7. Pump bushing wear

Standard high-mile wear.

Fix: Pump bushing replacement.

8. TCM communication issues

At very high miles, TCM-trans communication can degrade.

Fix: TCM replacement or repair.

Brand recommendations

Master rebuild kits

  • Alto (Red Eagle, Power Pack)
  • Raybestos (Stage-1)
  • Transtec (gaskets and seals)
  • Precision International (mid-tier OK for stock)

HD upgrades

  • Sonnax (PR valve kits, bore correction)
  • ATI (HD bands and components)

Solenoid replacement

  • Motorcraft (OEM)
  • Standard
  • Borg-Warner

Torque converters

  • Quality aftermarket from reputable vendors
  • ACDelco / Motorcraft (OEM equivalent)

Year-by-year notes

1994-1999 AX4N

Original version. Most rebuild parts widely available.

2000-2003 AX4N

Updated calibration. Some component changes.

2004-2007 AX4N

Late-model. Some new electronics. Fewer parts in current production.

Specific issues by application

Taurus / Sable

  • Most common AX4N application
  • Wide parts availability
  • Rebuild cost-effective

Continental

  • Larger application of AX4N
  • Same wear patterns
  • Parts share with Taurus

Windstar

  • Tow / family hauler use
  • More HD wear pattern
  • Often needs HD parts during rebuild

Freestyle

  • Slightly different application
  • Some unique parts
  • Less aftermarket support

What's different from other Ford transmissions

vs 4R70W

  • AX4N is FWD; 4R70W is RWD
  • Different design entirely
  • Different parts
  • AX4N is smaller (smaller engines)

vs AXOD

  • AX4N is updated version of AXOD
  • Better strength, electronics
  • Many internal improvements

vs 6F50

  • 6F50 replaced AX4N
  • Modern 6-speed design
  • Better performance and fuel economy
  • AX4N still relevant for older vehicles

Common rebuild mistakes

Mistake 1: Cheap "rebuild kit"

The AX4N has specific wear patterns. Cheap kits miss critical Sonnax HD parts.

Mistake 2: Reusing the servo bore

Servo bore wear is common. Address with Sonnax during rebuild.

Mistake 3: Cheap torque converter

Even stock-power applications need quality converter.

Mistake 4: Wrong fluid

AX4N uses Mercon V (some early models Mercon). Verify spec.

Mistake 5: Skipping cooler upgrade for Windstars

Windstars in tow applications need external cooler.

Cost summary

DIY rebuild:

  • Stock: $500-800
  • Windstar / tow: $800-1,200
  • Performance: $1,200-1,800

Shop rebuild installed:

  • Quality independent: $1,800-2,800
  • Specialty Ford shop: $2,500-3,500

Reman swap:

  • Quality reman: $1,800-2,500 installed

When to walk away

For high-mileage vehicles worth less than $3,000, the math doesn't work. Reman swap or vehicle replacement may make more sense than rebuild.

Fluid

AX4N / AX4S

Mercon V (originally) — modern Mercon LV is sometimes specified for later years.

Capacity: ~11-12 quarts total, ~5 quarts in pan.

Service: 30K severe duty, 50K normal.

Check owner's manual or VIN-specific spec to confirm.

Cooler upgrade for AX4N

For Windstar (especially) but also any AX4N in towing or hot-climate use:

  • External cooler upgrade is highly recommended
  • B&M, Hayden, Tru-Cool basic units fit easily
  • $80-150 parts + DIY install
  • Significant trans life extension

When AX4N issues mean replace (not rebuild)

Replace if:

  • Vehicle market value under $2,500
  • Multiple non-trans issues with the vehicle
  • Owner doesn't want to invest in older vehicle
  • AX4N parts becoming hard to find for specific year

Rebuild if:

  • Vehicle in good overall condition
  • Owner wants to keep the vehicle
  • Parts available
  • Other vehicle systems are healthy

Specific Sonnax HD parts for AX4N

  • Sonnax PR valve kit (mandatory at high miles)
  • Sonnax servo bore repair kit
  • Sonnax 1-2 accumulator piston kit
  • Sonnax 3-4 accumulator piston kit
  • Sonnax valve body bore correction kits

These are inexpensive ($30-100 each) and significantly improve shift quality and durability.
