The Allison 1000 NSBU (Neutral Start Backup) switch is the silent killer of Duramax trucks. When it fails, you get no-start, wrong-gear shifts, no backup lights, or limp mode. Quick fix once you find it.
What the NSBU switch does
- Tells the TCM what gear the shifter is in
- Allows starter engagement only in P or N
- Activates backup lights in R
- Provides PRNDL display
- Mounted on driver-side of trans manual lever

- Disconnect battery
- Locate NSBU on driver side of trans
- Remove 2 mounting bolts (10mm)
- Disconnect electrical connector
- Pull old NSBU off manual lever
- Install new NSBU (verify alignment)
- Reconnect electrical
- Reconnect battery
- Test through all shifter positions
- Clear codes
