6L80 Mechatronics Solenoid ID Guide

The 6L80 mechatronics has multiple solenoids — each with a specific job. Wrong identification means wrong replacement. Here's how to identify them.

Solenoid inventory

The 6L80 mechatronics contains:

  • PC1 (pressure control 1)
  • PC2 (pressure control 2)
  • PC3 (pressure control 3)
  • PC4 (pressure control 4)
  • PC5 (pressure control 5)
  • TCC (torque converter clutch)
  • 1-2 shift solenoid
  • 3-4 shift solenoid (some models)
  • Line pressure control

Function by solenoid

PC1 (line pressure):

  • Controls main line pressure
  • Affects all clutch apply
  • Code: P0746 / P0747

PC2 (1-2 shift control):

  • Controls 1-2 shift smoothness
  • Code: P0796 / P0797

PC3 (2-3 shift):

  • Controls 2-3 shift
  • Code: P0775 / P0776 / P0777

Read our 6L80 P0775 P0776 P0777 solenoid codes

PC4 (4-5 shift):

  • Higher gear shift control
  • Code: P0780 family

PC5 (5-6 shift):

  • Top gear shift control

TCC PWM:

Shift solenoids (on/off):

  • Direct hydraulic routing
  • Less common to fail vs PC solenoids

Resistance specs

  • PC solenoids: 3-7 ohms typical
  • Shift solenoids: 12-25 ohms typical
  • TCC PWM: 10-15 ohms typical

Outside spec = replace

Visual identification

Color-coded:

  • Some 6L80 versions color-code solenoids
  • Black, gray, brown, etc.
  • Verify with year-specific service manual

Position-based:

  • Each solenoid has dedicated mounting position
  • Service manual diagram critical

Common failures

PC2 / PC3:

  • Most common failures
  • Shift quality issues
  • Often replaced together

TCC PWM:

PC1 (line pressure):

  • Affects everything
  • Harsh shifts when failing

When to replace individual vs full pack

Individual:

  • Single solenoid failure
  • Pan inspection clean
  • Pack overall good

Full pack:

  • Multiple failures
  • Higher mileage
  • Cost-effective long-term

Cost:

  • Individual solenoid: $80-$200
  • Full pack rebuild kit: $300-$500
  • Complete mechatronics: $2,000-$3,500

Replacement procedure overview

1. Drain trans fluid

2. Drop pan

3. Disconnect mechatronics electrical

4. Remove mechatronics bolts

5. Replace specific solenoid(s)

6. Reinstall mechatronics with new gasket

7. Reinstall pan

8. Refill, test

Time: 4-6 hours
