68RFE Pressure Control Solenoid: Symptoms and Fix

The 68RFE pressure control solenoid is one of the most-failed parts on Cummins-equipped Ram trucks. Here's the failure pattern, diagnosis, and fix.

What the PC solenoid does

The 68RFE pressure control (PC) solenoid modulates line pressure based on PCM command. It controls:

  • Line pressure (overall)
  • Shift quality
  • Clutch apply force
  • TCC apply pressure

When it fails:

  • Harsh shifts
  • Soft shifts
  • Slipping
  • TCC issues
  • Limp mode

Common 68RFE PC failures

Solenoid coil failure:

  • Electrical open or short
  • Code P0731-P0734 or related
  • Often in tuned applications

Mechanical failure:

  • Pintle sticks
  • Spring failure
  • Less common but happens

Wiring harness damage:

  • Internal harness to PC solenoid wears
  • Causes intermittent symptoms
  • Common on high-mile trucks

Symptoms

Early stage:

  • Slightly harsh 1-2 shift
  • Mild TCC shudder
  • Codes may not yet appear

Mid stage:

Late stage:

  • Limp mode (3rd gear only)
  • Multiple codes
  • Trans inoperative until restart
  • Worst case: clutch damage from poor apply

Diagnosis sequence

Step 1: Scan tool data

  • Pull codes (TCM and PCM)
  • Note freeze frame conditions
  • Compare to known failure patterns

Step 2: Resistance test

  • Disconnect connector
  • Probe solenoid pins
  • Spec: 4-7 ohms typical
  • Open or shorted = failed solenoid

Step 3: Visual inspection

  • Wiring harness condition
  • Connector integrity
  • Cleanliness around solenoid

Step 4: Pan inspection

Replacement procedure

Tools needed:

  • 10mm and 13mm sockets
  • T-25 Torx
  • Drain pan
  • New PC solenoid
  • New pan gasket
  • ATF+4 fluid (4-6 quarts)

Steps:

1. Drain trans fluid (pan removal)

2. Remove filter

3. Locate PC solenoid (in solenoid pack on 68RFE)

4. Disconnect electrical

5. Remove retaining hardware

6. Pull old solenoid

7. Install new with new O-rings

8. Reconnect electrical

9. New filter, pan gasket

10. Refill with ATF+4

Time: 2-4 hours DIY

Cost:

  • Mopar OEM PC solenoid: $200-350
  • Quality aftermarket: $150-250
  • Filter and gasket: $30-50
  • ATF+4 fluid: $40-60
  • Total: $220-460

When pack-level service is required

Full solenoid pack:

  • Multiple solenoids failing
  • High mileage
  • Internal harness damage
  • Cost: $500-800 part

Why 68RFE PC solenoids fail

Heat:

  • 68RFE runs hot under tow
  • Solenoid sees high temp continuously
  • Premature wear
  • Read our diesel tow rig setup

Tuning:

  • ECM tunes increase trans demand
  • Higher pressures, more cycles
  • Accelerated wear

Fluid contamination:

Stock factory life:

  • Around 80-150K miles typical
  • Less in HD tow

Preventing PC solenoid failure

Cooling:

Fluid service:

  • ATF+4 every 30-50K miles
  • Pan + filter
  • Don't skip filter

Reasonable tuning:

  • Mild tunes acceptable
  • Aggressive tunes accelerate wear
  • Plan rebuilds accordingly

When PC solenoid is symptomatic of bigger issues

Clutch damage from poor apply:

  • Pan inspection shows burnt material
  • New solenoid won't fix burnt clutches
  • Full rebuild required

Worn valve body:

  • Bores wear from miles of operation
  • Sonnax kit may be available
  • Higher-mile trucks may need this

Internal harness:

  • Damaged internal harness causes intermittent solenoid codes
  • Replacement requires trans drop
  • Pair with rebuild

After replacement: relearn

TCM relearn:

  • Disconnect battery 10 min after install
  • Reconnect
  • Drive through various conditions
  • Allow 100-300 miles for adapts

Codes return?

  • Check connector seating
  • Verify harness intact
  • Confirm correct solenoid for year
  • Verify fluid level (critical on 68RFE)
