The 68RFE flexplate is a known failure point on tuned Cummins trucks. When it cracks, you can lose the trans, converter, and bellhousing simultaneously. Here's the HD billet fix.
What the flexplate does
The flexplate:
- Connects engine crankshaft to torque converter
- Transmits all engine torque to trans
- Allows slight flex (hence the name)
- Mounts the starter ring gear
When healthy: smooth power transfer.
When cracking: vibration, eventual failure.

Why 68RFE flexplates crack
Material limitation:
- Stamped steel
- Adequate for stock HP
- Tuning easily doubles HP
- Fatigue cracking results
Stress concentrations:
- Cracks start at converter bolt holes
- Propagate around plate
- Eventually catastrophic
Heat fatigue:
- Cummins runs hot under tune
- Heat cycling weakens plate
- Read our transmission overheats in traffic guide
Vibration:
- High-revving tuned engines
- Increased vibration
- Accelerates cracking
Symptoms
Early stage:
- Slight vibration under load
- May be intermittent
- Easy to ignore
Mid stage:
- Clear vibration
- Knocking sound under throttle
- Possibly visible crack on inspection
- Read our transmission warning signs
Late stage:
- Severe knock/rattle
- Engine and trans misalignment
- Risk of catastrophic failure
- Stop driving — investigate immediately
Catastrophic failure:
- Flexplate breaks completely
- Pieces damage converter, trans, bellhousing
- Could cost $5,000-10,000+ to repair
Diagnosis
Visual inspection (with engine off):
- Remove inspection plate at bottom of bellhousing
- Use mirror and flashlight
- Rotate engine slowly
- Look at flexplate for cracks
- Most common: around converter bolts
Listening test:
- Engine running, in P
- Knock at idle = possible crack
- Worse under throttle confirms
Vibration test:
- Drive under varying load
- Vibration tied to RPM = mechanical
- Vibration tied to throttle = flexplate likely
The HD billet flexplate
What it is:
- CNC-machined billet steel
- Higher fatigue capacity
- Stronger material
- Eliminates cracking under tune
Cost:
- Sonnax HD flexplate: $400-700
- ATS billet flexplate: $400-700
- Mandatory for tuned Cummins
Why it solves the problem:
- Better material
- Better design
- Stronger at stress concentrations
- 5-10x stock fatigue life

When to replace
Mandatory replacement if:
- Crack visible (any size)
- Knocking confirmed
- After known crack
Preventive replacement if:
- Tuned truck over 100K miles
- Stock flexplate condition unknown
- During any rebuild
- Cheap insurance vs catastrophic failure
Optional if:
- 100% stock truck
- No tune planned
- Low miles
Installation considerations
Crankshaft removal:
- Flexplate behind transmission
- Requires trans removal
- Best done during rebuild
- Read our transmission rebuild break-in — applies after install
Standalone replacement (no rebuild):
- Possible but trans must come down
- Labor: 6-10 hours typical
- Doesn't make economic sense usually
Always do with rebuild:
- Trans is down anyway
- Marginal cost
- Mandatory for tuned trucks
What else to inspect
When flexplate cracked:
- Converter mounting bosses
- Crankshaft register
- Pilot bearing
- Bellhousing mounting
When flexplate replaced preventively:
- Inspect all of above
- Verify torque on converter bolts
- New converter bolts recommended
Cost breakdown
Catastrophic failure costs:
- Trans rebuild: $3,000-5,000
- New torque converter: $600-1,500
- Bellhousing repair/replace: $500-2,000
- Labor: $1,500-3,000
- Total: $5,600-11,500
HD flexplate preventive:
- HD flexplate: $400-700
- Installation: included in rebuild
- Total: $400-700
Savings: $5,200-10,800
