4R100 vs E4OD: Which Ford Diesel Trans Do You Have

Ford 7.3L and early 6.0L Powerstrokes came with either E4OD or 4R100 trans. They look identical but use different parts. Here is how to tell them apart.

Year breakdown

E4OD:

  • 1989-1998 Ford trucks
  • 7.3L IDI through early 7.3L Powerstroke
  • Some 460 gas

4R100:

  • 1998-2003 Super Duty 7.3L Powerstroke
  • 1999-2004 V10 Triton
  • Early 6.0L Powerstroke 2003

Quickest identification

Look at the pan:

  • E4OD: 18 bolts, slightly different shape
  • 4R100: 20 bolts, more pronounced ribs
  • Both are 17 quart capacity-ish

Look at the harness connector:

  • E4OD: square connector
  • 4R100: rectangular connector with strain relief

Look at the VIN tag (door jamb):

  • E = E4OD
  • 4 = 4R100
  • 10th digit of VIN indicates model year

Internal differences

Hard parts shared:

  • Case
  • Most planetary parts
  • Output shaft
  • Tailshaft housing

4R100 upgrades over E4OD:

  • Stronger torque converter
  • HD intermediate sprag
  • Better wiring harness
  • Updated valve body
  • HD direct clutch pack

Solenoid differences:

  • E4OD: 4 solenoids in body
  • 4R100: 5 solenoids (added PWM TCC)
  • NOT interchangeable

Common failure points by model

E4OD:

  • Direct clutch (top failure)
  • Intermediate sprag
  • Output shaft splines
  • EPC solenoid wiring
  • Read our E4OD rebuild cost

4R100:

  • TCC clutch wear (PWM lockup)
  • Direct drum still failure prone
  • Solenoid harness chafing
  • Read our 4R100 rebuild cost

Torque capacity

E4OD stock:

  • ~450 lb-ft input
  • Marginal for 7.3L Powerstroke
  • HD rebuild required for tuning

4R100 stock:

  • ~550 lb-ft input
  • Better but still weak for tuned 7.3
  • HD rebuild still recommended

Upgrade paths

E4OD to E4OD HD:

  • HD direct drum (BTS, Suncoast)
  • Triple-disc converter
  • HD intermediate sprag
  • Billet input shaft
  • $1500-$3000 parts

4R100 to 4R100 HD:

  • Similar parts available
  • BTS, Suncoast, JTC builds
  • $1500-$3500 parts

Swap E4OD to 4R100:

  • Possible but requires PCM
  • Wiring harness swap
  • Not cost-effective vs rebuilding existing

Parts interchange

Will swap:

  • Pan gasket (same)
  • Most hard parts
  • Bushings
  • Sun gears

Will NOT swap:

  • Solenoids (different count)
  • Valve body
  • Wiring harness
  • TCM / PCM tuning

Rebuild kit selection

Must match exactly:

  • E4OD master kit ≠ 4R100 master kit
  • Friction count differs
  • Steel count differs

What to order:

Bottom line

4R100 is the better starting point:

  • Stronger parts
  • PWM TCC for smoother lockup
  • If you have the choice between trucks, take 4R100

Both rebuild similarly:

  • Same teardown procedure
  • Similar labor cost
  • Parts cost differs slightly
