4L80E No 3rd Gear or No 4th Gear: Diagnosis

When a 4L80E loses 3rd or 4th gear, the truck becomes useless for highway driving. Engine over-revs, fuel economy crashes. Here's how to find the cause and fix it.

What "no 3rd or 4th" means in 4L80E context

The 4L80E has 4 forward gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th overdrive). Common loss patterns:

  • No 4th only (overdrive)
  • No 3rd only (rare)
  • No 3rd AND no 4th (failure in upper gears)

Each has different causes.

Common causes

Cause 1: Solenoid pack failure (most common)

The 4L80E internal solenoid pack has multiple failure modes. The pack controls all shifts.

Symptoms: Stuck in lower gears, possibly stuck in 3rd (limp mode). Often with codes.

Fix: Solenoid pack replacement. The 4L80E pack is well-known for failure.

  • OEM AC Delco: $300-500
  • Quality aftermarket: $200-400
  • Labor: 1-2 hours, $100-300
  • Total: $400-800

Cause 2: Direct clutch pack wear

The 3rd gear apply clutch is worn.

Symptoms: Flares between 2-3 shift, possibly slips under load in 3rd.

Fix: Rebuild. $2,500-4,000 typically.

Cause 3: Overdrive clutch pack wear

The 4th gear (overdrive) clutch pack is worn.

Symptoms: Flares 3-4 shift or won't engage 4th at all.

Fix: Rebuild. $2,500-4,000 typically.

Cause 4: Intermediate band failure

The intermediate band may have broken or worn excessively.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't accelerate in 2nd or 3rd properly.

Fix: Band replacement during rebuild. $2,000-3,500.

Cause 5: PR valve wear

General pressure problem affecting upper gears.

Symptoms: Multiple shift issues, harsh shifts, possible slipping.

Fix: Sonnax PR valve kit. $200-400.

Cause 6: TCC apply system failure

Sometimes makes trans feel like missing gears.

Symptoms: Heavy load fluctuation at cruise. Trans feels coupled then uncoupled.

Fix: TCC apply valve kit. $200-400.

Cause 7: TCM strategy issue

Less common but possible.

Symptoms: No codes, but TCM commanding wrong shifts.

Fix: TCM update or replacement.

Diagnostic procedure

Step 1: Pull codes

First thing. 4L80E codes are usually specific:

  • P0750-P0760: Solenoid issues
  • P0894: Component slipping
  • P0846: Pressure too low
  • Multiple codes: solenoid pack failure likely

Step 2: Verify fluid level and condition

  • Burnt smell = clutch wear inside
  • Metal in pan = hard part wear
  • Low fluid = leak somewhere

Step 3: Pressure test

Tells you if pressure is the issue vs. mechanical wear.

Step 4: Live scan tool data

Commanded gear vs actual. Reveals if TCM is commanding correctly.

Step 5: Pan inspection

Burnt clutch material = rebuild needed.

When it's solenoid pack vs rebuild

Replace solenoid pack if:

  • Single specific shift problem
  • Codes point to specific solenoid
  • Low to medium mileage
  • Pan is clean
  • Recent onset of symptoms

Rebuild if:

  • Multiple shift issues
  • Burnt fluid
  • Metal in pan
  • High mileage (150K+)
  • Solenoid pack already replaced and problem persists
  • Slipping in any gear
