4L60E vs 4L65E vs 4L70E: How to ID Your GM 4-Speed

The 4L60E, 4L65E, and 4L70E look identical from outside. Internals differ. Get the wrong rebuild kit and youll waste a day. Heres how to ID each and what swaps.

Production years and applications

4L60E (1992-2005):

  • Standard light-duty GM truck and SUV trans
  • ~360 ft-lb rating
  • 4-pinion planetary
  • 4L65E (2001-2014):

  • HD version of 4L60E
  • ~440 ft-lb rating
  • 5-pinion planetary
  • HD output shaft
  • 4L70E (2006-2013):

  • Premium HD version
  • ~480 ft-lb rating
  • Same internals as 4L65E mostly
  • Improved valve body calibration
  • External identification

    Pan:

  • All three: 16-bolt pan
  • Same pan and gasket
  • Connectors:

  • 4L60E: 13-pin electrical
  • 4L65E: 13-pin
  • 4L70E: 13-pin (slightly different pinout)
  • Visual differences:

  • Hard to tell from outside
  • VIN tag on trans is best ID
  • RPO code identification (best method)

Glove box sticker shows RPO codes:

  • M30 = 4L60E
  • M32 = 4L65E
  • MYC = 4L70E (some years)
  • Input shaft spline count

    4L60E:

  • 27 spline input
  • 4L65E:

  • 29 or 30 spline (varies year)
  • Different from 4L60E
  • 4L70E:

  • 30 spline
  • Same shaft as late 4L65E
  • Planetary pinion count

    4L60E:

  • 4-pinion reaction carrier
  • 4L65E:

  • 5-pinion reaction carrier (HD)
  • 4L70E:

  • 5-pinion (same as 4L65E)
  • What parts interchange between all three

    • Pan and gasket
    • Filter
    • Pump assembly (most years)
    • Valve body castings (similar)
    • Solenoids (mostly)
    • Most clutch packs
    • Most sealing rings
    • 80%+ overlap on rebuild kits

    What is different

    Different between 4L60E and 4L65E/70E:

  • Input shaft (27 vs 29/30 spline)
  • Planetary set (4 vs 5 pinion)
  • Reaction sun (later models)
  • Output shaft (some years)
  • Different between 4L65E and 4L70E:

  • Minor valve body calibration
  • HD shift programming on 4L70E
  • Both physically same trans
  • Vehicles by trans

    4L60E vehicles:

  • 1993-1998 GMT400 light trucks
  • 1998-2005 GMT800 5.3L Silverado/Tahoe (most)
  • F-body Camaro/Firebird LS1
  • Most 4WD light-duty GMT800
  • 4L65E vehicles:

  • 2001-2013 GMT800/900 HD trucks
  • 6.0L Vortec applications
  • SS pickup, Trailblazer SS
  • Some Suburban 2500
  • 4L70E vehicles:

  • 2006-2013 Silverado 1500 6.2L
  • Tahoe LTZ 5.3L
  • Some Camaro applications
  • Hummer H2
  • Buying a rebuild kit - which to choose

If you only have the trans (no VIN):

  • Count input spline (27 = 60E, 29+ = 65E/70E)
  • Count planet pinions (4 = 60E, 5 = 65E/70E)
  • Verify reaction sun (sun gear count)
  • Common buyer mistakes:

  • Buying 60E kit for 65E (wrong frictions on planetary)
  • Buying 65E shaft for 60E case (wont fit drum)
  • Buying generic 4-speed kit (may be incomplete)
  • HD upgrade path

    Upgrading 4L60E with 4L65E parts:

  • 5-pinion planetary (HD)
  • HD output shaft
  • Adds ~80 ft-lb capacity
  • $200-$400 extra over OEM
  • NOT worth doing:

  • Input shaft swap (requires drum)
  • Reaction sun (more drum work)
  • 4L70E valve body (limited gain)
  • Cost summary

    4L60E rebuild kit:

  • Basic: $80-$140
  • Master: $150-$300
  • HD with 5-pinion planet: $200-$400
  • 4L65E rebuild kit:

  • Basic: $120-$200
  • Master: $200-$350
  • HD: $250-$450
  • 4L70E rebuild kit:

  • Same as 4L65E (use 4L65E kit)
  • Different valve body calibration option
  • Cross-reference table

    4L60E weak points:

  • 3-4 clutch pack (most worn)
  • Sun shell stripping
  • Pump bushing
  • Reverse input drum cracking
  • 4L65E weak points:

  • Same as 4L60E generally
  • 5-pinion planetary holds longer
  • HD output shaft better
  • 4L70E weak points:

  • Same as 4L65E
  • Slightly better tune for shift quality
  • HD upgrades for all three

    • Beast sun shell (read our 4L60E sun shell upgrade)
    • HD 3-4 clutch pack (GPZ)
    • HD reverse input drum
    • Sonnax valve body kit

When 4L80E swap makes more sense

    If you exceed these:

  • 500+ ft-lb at the trans
  • Heavy tow regularly
  • Tuned engine without HD trans rebuild plan
  • 4L80E offers:

  • 2x torque capacity (440 stock, 800+ HD)
  • Better HD parts availability
  • Read our 4L60E to 4L80E swap
  • Quick reference card

    4L60E (M30): light duty, 27 spline input, 4-pinion

    4L65E (M32): HD, 29-30 spline input, 5-pinion

4L70E (MYC): premium HD, 30 spline, 5-pinion, better tune

Buy 4L65E or 4L70E parts for either:

    • Same kit fits both
    • HD parts for more capacity
    • Save labor over multiple-supplier sources
